I always remember my first PBP, finishing, coming back home and not being able to feel the ends of my fingers on one hand for over 4 months. I put that down to not having enough gel or padding in the gloves. Since then, no issues with numbing. Nicky' inside palms are a familiar sight to me, it does take a while for that skin to flake off and new skin to regrow. You just have to give it time and reduce ride loads; which on completing events such as TCR is actually remarkable easy because often than not your happy for a break off the bike! Well done to Nicky, I was dot-watching - glad to see you push on through to the end. As for the precision stuff, I bought a two boxes worth of the 1000 strength sachets for PCR - the sachets are just brilliant for ultras as they take up much less space.

2022 tour de france femmes kind of vibe! Phenomenal day out in what looked like fairly hot weather; and how nice to see Nicky again and to know the incredible distances she's been riding! Way out of my league to grind out so many miles 12 straight days so credit to her and her resilience. Remarkable to say the least! West Yorkshire shouts freedom, thank you for having brought us along, I'm always keen about getting to know places I wasn't aware of before. Be safe out there on the road Katie and take care! We on the backseat supporting you. 😄😊 🌝

40 quid😮 if in a pinch for electrolytes you can make a mix up from common salt, baking powder, epsom salt and bananas for potassium. Most pharmacies stock electrolyte powders or tabs.

And generally electrolyte tablets don't cost NEARLY as much as Precision Hydration. Pharmacies and even grocery stores carry individual and sometimes combined ingredient tablets in tubes of 20 for less than a euro. Get the Mg, Ca, Zinc and Vitamin C plus banana and you'll be set for a week of riding for under 5 euros. Even in Switzerland, Lidl carries them for 85 cents.

I've had a long ride hangover from the heat here in Central Texas. It messes you up. You sleep like you are dead. Then you wake up drunk for a bit with a headache. I drink a lot of water and sport drinks and of course soda for sugar.

Ohhhh I know the sinking feeling of not remembering my go to electrolytes mix. Last year's Triple Bypass ride I forgot to pack them...sat right next to where I was loading my bike box. Psychological setback...the event organizers had free packets from another well-respected brand...they worked just fine. Do you ever wear a cycling cap under your helmet. Several women on our TFC team do, even those with longer hair. I find the cap helps with sweat and protects my balding melon. Great scenery. Good chat about ultra events. Don't want to do anything that requires numbing my nether regions. Thanks as always. 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️

I get all the electrolytes I need by eating dried apricots, dried figs, dried dates, bananas, coconut water and by adding 1.6 gm of pink Himalayan salt for every 600 mL of water. On average you need the following per litre of water in mg: 240 potassium, 10 magnesium, 1150 sodium and 20 calcium. The water replaces only that lost during the ride not before/after. You can calculate the amount of water needed for a ride in a temperature warmer than 20 C with the following empirically derived formula: mL/hour = 2.1935 T^2 - 105.79 T + 1972.9 (nb T^2 means T squared eg 22 x 22) where T is the average of the AccuWeather estimate of the RealFeel temperature of the ride. Add a 10% margin in case the forecast is slightly wrong, which it rarely is if you re-check an hour before starting the ride. I have derived this over the past 2 years of cycling in the north of Thailand where the RealFeel temperature ranges from 20 to 40 C. In the UK, the RealFeel temperature will generally be that provided by the forecasters as humidity, UV light and sun are not as severe as here.

Crash? I barely remembered that amidst everything that happened over 12 days, too much to comprehend! The crash was only a minor one.. a little over confident on the rough stuff but it was on the last day so I was pretty wrecked anyway 😂

'Big Jack' AKA Thursden Valley Road Climb is upsettingly close to my house and as a result features almost every time I wish to go south towards Hebden (or onward to Cragg Vale). I'm never warmed up and as a result it always feels grim. I can't believe someone would pay £40 to ship some electrolyte tabs rather than try A N Other brand?!? Madness 🤣

KB, think about pre-loading with salt _before_ long efforts to prevent the onset of muscle fatigue & cramping -- this in addition to taking electrolytes along the way (per "The Salt Fix" by Dr. James DiNicolantonio).

Defo! Night before a big hot ride will have one of these and also the morning after :)
@malcontent_1 Жыл бұрын
@@KatieKookaburra actually, you'll want to take in salt less than an hour before long rides. As a _supplement_ it won't remain effective in your system for all that long (according to the doc, who is a published biochem researcher, btw).

I can't imagine riding without padded cycling gloves. Hot, cold, wet, dry, indoors, outdoors. So many reasons to wear them, no reasons not to. Add this to the list. Sunscreen, though, I'm still bad at remembering to apply. At least you don't need them indoors.

cant claim that im an endurance expert but after doing touring for over a week doing back to back rides its often pressure points that hurt like saddle sores hands etc that are hard to get used to if that make sense that was more tiring than the miles on the legs .

Seriously, pain relief should be a last resort, preferably for when the ride is done, and no more damage is expected. Discuss these issues with a bike fit specialist to keep them from happening in the first place instead of treating the symptoms and risking more damage!

I had a multitude of strategies for keeping saddles sores at bay, it all worked and I had a happy bum. Bearing in mind I was riding 3500km into temps of high 30s, the numbing cream was a back pocket strategy to keep things comfortable and enjoyable in the closing stages. I wouldn't use it on an everyday ride but would take it again on the next ultra@@jamesrosar3823
@Mesofs9 Жыл бұрын
better use antifriction cream on the skin, you still feel. but it really relvies rubbing especially on hot days.
@nickyshaw3827 Жыл бұрын
I agree as a preventative measure, and a good antibacterial one at that. The numbing cream was a secondary measure if the sh*t hit the fan after 3000km and I wanted to continue enjoying saddle time en route to the finish! Takeaway - it basically made saddle sores a non-issue along with various other preventative strategies - keeping clean etc.

You do have to learn how to get it out of crash mode, that seems to be the thing that most often catches people out. I had a similar left shifter malfunction on LEL and I was wishing for Di2 then. When I got home I replaced the cable and housing which was a much cheaper fix :)
