I have been using an Inreach mini for years on all our outdoor adventures. We use the live sharing too on a password protected link so are familiescan see where we are. To me a good backpacking trip is not having mobile service for a week. The weather updates are nice to have too. I really like that I could call SOS from my Garmin watch, if I ever had to.

Garmin reach mini is a great device, the iPhone 14 on wards can also do satellite text messaging when you don't have a cel signal

Absolutely loved north Wales when we went there early in summer (some of the same roads too, I see). Thr roads are great, climbs are epic, scenery is mental. Looking forward to the more southern bit for the Dragon Ride next year.

Yep ,so start at Dollgarog!(bad spelling) possibly hell fire pass at end of Penmachno Valley and did this on a Wild Wales tourist trial way back ,got to the top and felt dead ,decend to road, turn right to Blaenau, nah ! Turn left to Bala ,sodding hills but fantastic scenery 😂

I’ve considered a mini garmin inreach, as when I go on remote bikecamping adventures, I rarely have phone signal, especially deep in forests or remote mountains.

Very cool adventure. I never have issues going UP on hikes, it's coming back down. Just like cycling where the pain of long climbs is countered by the terror of losing it on descent. Garmin unit is key, as is letting someone know when you set out on a ride/hike/canoe/kayak...The unit you're carrying is excellent. IIRC you can pair to phone to write specific texts using the phone keyboard. Thanks for sharing.

Yessss the way down was way tougher... Give me up any day of the week. And yes just keeping people informed where you are on long adventures is really important and the SOS on it, just ESSENTIAL for outdoor folks :)

I bought the larger blackberry shaped InReach for bikepacking the tour divide, only because I thought a keyboard style face would be more beneficial. Rarely used the keyboard, since I could use predetermined messages. The mini is the way to go.

Katie I'd just add that the Garmin InReach is not just excellent for safeguarding yourself and communicating on multi day trips without the wider family/partner worrying, but having come across a fellow mountaineer in a really bad way it literally saves lives as the time taken to get back down and raise the alert would have been too long. I cannot rate this product enough if you live an outdoor lifestyle that takes you away from standard mobile reception. It really is a vital piece of equipment and way easier than back in the days of having to take an Iridium Sat phone. Really enjoyable and great blog / content btw, coming from lancashire its all very relatable and good to hear that on one of the climb you just enjoyed it for you (following your recent video on burnout :-)

That little garmin thing looks pretty handy. Phone is cool et all but something rugged/waterproof/ultra long battery feels like a sensible thing to have. I’ve seen EPIRBs that do similar things before, it’s not a new concept but that one is a lot smaller and more pocket / bag friendly. The fact you can use it for comms beyond ‘emergency beacon’ mode looks pretty handy too.

Looks a cracking day. I’m gutted as was supposed to be doing Snowdon today with my sister and her pal, but the pal (who was driving), bailed and the weather looked shite so we canned it for today. I’ve been fortunate to do the Llamberis path at night in 2019, and Pyg and Miners last October, both in good weather, so I guess I’ve had my luck for now😂 X

I'm totally surprised you didn't have a Spot Tracker already! That's been around a long time and is great for tracking remote rides (& has the SOS/messages too, and it's way cheaper!). BTW I went to your Strava ride and surprised I didn't see a segment named "Hellfire Pass"! It's funny that usually the names say what people call places, but that was true on a previous ride/video too oddly (maybe "Jack" it was called?). To be fair we used to call climbs by their Strava names not v.v. LOL!!!!! p.s. love that the guy recognised your voice! :-) and now he's famously in your video!

@7:50 Sorry but have to disagree on the "most/all cyclists should carry this". We're talking about a 400 EUR device that requires a minimum 20 EUR per month (or 180/year prepaid) subscription for the edge use case that you go somewhere that does not have cell reception. Happy for Garmin to show this product on the channel but this is really not for most/all cyclists.
