To cure HIV you basically need to do gene editing on a grown up person, theoretically possible, but practically very challenging. It will eventually be possible. But it's also possible to stop the HIV epidemic with tools that already exist, all that is needed is to apply them more effectively. If you can get high enough percentage of all the infected under antivirals treatment the rate of new infections will go into steady decline until eventually the last HIV infected dies of old age. All you really need to start with is more effective and more widespread diagnostics, find out all the people you need to provide treatment for. That approach will work with any infectious disease and HIV is no different.

Nice presentation on the whole, but I would quibble with one item. At 11:51, the comment is made that antiretroviral treatment can't get us to zero (HIV deaths) because it treats infected people, unlike a vaccine which prevents infection. Of course a vaccine will always be greatly preferred for a whole host of reasons, but we now have plenty of evidence that antiretroviral treatment does prevent infection in the healthy (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) and prevents transmission from the infected (Treatment as Prevention). It's unclear how the result in the US will translate worldwide, but new infections (not just deaths) in the US have been gradually declining in recent years, and the reason is unlikely to be because the virus has run out of people to infect or because vulnerable populations suddenly reached for their condoms when they weren't doing so before.
