We have short memories though. Back in the 80s most people despised diesel having displace steam, and the BR service was not as reliable a today. Rose tinted specs are wonderful though!

Feeling nostalgic watching this ❤️, Classic Class 40 diesel locomotion,Bring back those days when seeing and hearing these classic locomotives to other Class locos like the 26,27 ,31,33,37,47 ,50,52 ,55 and not ever forgetting the sounds of a class 40 ,love the sounds of fans looking out the windows ,Great nostalgic memories of growing up with these sort of things ,Since Privatisation to today's Generation of trains,Nothing like BR memories growing up.Miss the Whistlers when they were retired in the early 1980s 🥺😢😭makes me greet thinking about how BR Jobsworths were making decisions retiring these iconic workhorses to history and BR changing every day when blue was ruling the rails ,I would have been 10 when this was filmed,Now at 49 Feeling emotional.😭

@@aureol40012 You’re very welcome, i was born and bred in Sheffield in 1963 so I oh so remember the Man - Skeg very much so in the late 70’s to early 80’s when I was a young adolescent. @@christopherattwood48 it’s my dad really who should be thanked. He bought the kit and did most of the filming, including this. I took over filming in 1985 until the kit died a death in 1988. Hardly surprising it only lasted 5 years, it was used intensively!

@@aureol40012 Very Nice, I’m kinda jealous, I only did it once from Sheffield to Skegness and return in about 1979/80 but I cannot recall which 40 it was. I did do the Jolly fisherman Pathfinder Railtours recently ish from Derby (where I’ve lived now since 1992) to Skegness and return behind 20 107 / 20 096 on 27/05/2019. That was a very nostalgic journey too and brought back many memories.

As the song says "those were the days my friend I thought they'd never end" we all took it for granted, mk1s, loco hauled trains, relief trains at bank holidays instead of cancellations or bus replacement, vacuum braked overnight trains, adex, mystery excursions, I could go on, but they did end. I did 40181 Manchester to Sheffield on that day which was 40 years ago this Summer, 2024. Thanks for posting, brings back happy memories.

My grandfather retired around the year of 1960 when steam trains started getting scrapped and my great grandfather also had the same job, my grandfather worked for British railway in Carlisle driving the trains and being the fireman he loved his job and would also work in the long forgotten Carlisle upperby 12B carriage sheds, he would also get dropped off on the maryport line by Carlisle racecourse by a train bridge in the farmers fields as there was an access gate to the track and it was only down the roads from my nan and granddads house when my mom was a teen, he made me love trains and I love vintage even more, favourite train out of them all is the flying scotsman and out of the freight loco's is the class 40 diesel loco, I wanted to have the same job as them both but i developed epilepsy back in November of 2017 just 1 year before I could drive, but if I ever lose my epilepsy or have to have brain surgery to remove the part that's causing it, I will hopefully be able to get this job, but as of right now any job in a train station would be perfect for me.

BR was looking a bit tatty all round by the mid 80's and this class 40 was no exception. They could have given it a bit of a clean before this trip! And the Mk1 coaches were equally well weathered, too. Still, although the 80's railscene looked sad by comparison with the 50's, the worst was yet to come and now the UK system is nowhere as varied and interesting anymore, though somewhat cleaner.

I read that Class 40s were supposed to have been banned from the holiday trains in 1983 due to holidaymakers being outnumbered by enthusiasts... I notice Sulzer engine locos and electrics didn't attract bashers like the English Electric classes... I've only seen one Class 40 actually working and that was D200 on its farewell run to York.
