No, Ricky is pointing out the ridiculousness of it all. He has said before he doesn't think that a real Inuit would give a toss about what name they are collectively referred to. A person living in an igloo on a frozen tundra who often has to cut a hole in the ice so they can find food probably doesnt have the time to argue over what to call themselves. Other people who arent Inuit/Eskimo do though.

There was a concentrated movement in the Canada to shift away from the use of the word "eskimo" and use the term "inuit" when referring to northern native Canadians. This change was implemented around 1996 or so, about the same time as the establishment of the territory of Nunavut. Inuit is the more commonly used and preferred term in both Canada and Greenland. Ricky Gervais is not "talking shit" but actually trying to show some measure of respect to this culture.
@BigChiken442 жыл бұрын
Yes, I confirm, here in Canada people don't have real problems, so they invent bs like that. And Karl is right - it's always someone else is getting offended on someone's behalf. Like term "Latinx" which no real latino uses ever
@Cusack18712 жыл бұрын
No they did in fact change the politically correct term in the early 00's, whether in England or Alaska. So he's not talking shit.
@1starshot12 жыл бұрын
That's right, Inuit are a small tribe of the Eskimo's. Eskimo's feel insulted by being called Inuit (if that's not their tribe). Like calling all Englishmen Geordies.

Its because it was a name given by non inuits that means "Raw meat eaters" which they take offence to cos it saying they prehistoric (Cant cook) carnivores (Like a dog or something) or some shit
@Mark-Catz12 жыл бұрын
"Eskimo" is a perfectly acceptable English-language word. Just because it's a vestige of European imperialism, doesn't make it wrong.
@TheRealmwalker12 жыл бұрын
The cultures of the Inuit were established a very, very long time before the border was created between the Yukon and Alaska. The "proper term" for referring to the Inuit people should likewise transcend political borders. If the Inuit of Alaska do not take offense to the term "Eskimo", then good on them, it shows tolerance and restraint. But for a non-Inuit to declare what is and isn't the "proper" term for their people is wrong.

Notice the "i think" at the end of my comment. Its Inupiat and Yupik that are types of eskimo/inuit. Hilarious that i got something wrong "lol".
@Cusack18712 жыл бұрын
I believe Ricky referred to the change ironically, but even if he was serious, you wouldn't say eskimo on English television if it was considered politically incorrect or offensive in England. You can understand that - can't you?

I'm not arguing for political correctness, I merely said that if you were on TV as Ricky Gervais is you would try to be completely politically correct to prevent an huge influx of complaints from arseholes. That is what he is doing here (ironically), please read.
@jdw9912 жыл бұрын
I can understand why fools wouldn't say it, but don't tell that I wouldn't. I don't cater to politically correct nonsense. They're not inuit, they are eskimos, so why would I call them by a name that is neither factual, nor what they call themselves? If someone is offended by facts, then their offense is not worth bothering over.
@jdw9912 жыл бұрын
The point you are missing is they didn't send Karl to Canada, they sent him to Alaska. In Alaska, the proper term is Eskimo, not Inuit.
@jdw9912 жыл бұрын
Sorry back at ya, but you don't know what you're talking about.
@jdw9911 жыл бұрын
Link's broken, and who cares what a University says about the matter anyway? The natives call themselves Eskimos, not the name of a tribe (Inuit) that they do not belong to.
@jdw9911 жыл бұрын
I really don't care what you think. I am not going to change my opinion because you insult me. Grow up.
@jdw9911 жыл бұрын
Ah, but in this episode, they're going to Alaska. They're talking about natives from Alaska. We've been discussing natives from Alaska in these comments. Don't try to change the subject now just because you are wrong. Tossing out more insults doesn't help your case either. Again, grow up.
