Overwatches are useful even when they don't hit anything. The biggest (and most subtle) technique overwatches do is modify the alien's behavior. Some of the time the aliens will call the bluff and you will have to roll the dice on whether the overwatch hits, but the literal damage done by overwatch isn't the only boon it offers.

The other bonus to overwatch is that it actually gives you 2 chances to kill the aliens. The first chance is overwatch, and then, it's your turn.

Interceptor Pilot, Log #17 - Aren Locke The mission went well. Incredibly well. Having carapace armor on everyone is proving to be a game changer. Even when Stargazer and Watcher ended up poison by thin men, they didn't need to spend time in the infirmary. And with the UFO having landed, instead of being shot down by one of us pilots, they got more material than usual with the large scout ship. And both Jube and Stargazer got promoted to Colonel; so now they're the highest ranking soldiers in the line-up. Both earned those promotions; and it seems that they aren't letting the losses they've witnessed break them. Stargazer, especially, has gotten a stronger will to survive. To make the aliens pay. Things are also continuing to progress in the base itself. New soldiers getting hired, lot of excavation happening, and the Commander is moving to get the genetics lab built; looking to enhance some of his soldiers. The alien containment facility has also been built; now that leaves the ground team to eventually capture one of the aliens (Vahlen is practically giddy at the prospect). And now... the ground team has a chance to take a crack at EXALT. The operative sent there, Durant I think her name was, called for backup while intel is being transmitted. The Commander is sending the same team in, except Cutter was replaced with our newest heavy, Magallanes. This'll be our first time seeing what EXALT forces can do; how strong they are. Locke out.

I'd like to play a mod where I'm just the guy running the gray market. I start ever month with little problems l need money to solve: find a way to pay for Sandy's braces, pay the vet bill for the cats surgery, put money in the college fund... But alien stuff is super hard to come by, and then at the end of the month ,instead of the council calling, Odd walks through the door and a giant cha-ching sound goes off.😂

It's annoying when the Thin men spit at groups, but it will be tragic when the Mutons start throwing Plasma grenades at groups; so please be careful. On another note, the Arc thrower doesn't work on Exault, unless they changed it.

as I remember it the "Arc thrower" doesn't always single shot a tgt, you need to have more than one on hand just in case... (especially when you go after... )

Heh, just wait until a muton throws one at a single soldier, apparently just to blow up the cover. Well played, but man does that ever suck. Same thing you see with thin men spitting at just a single target.

The force field around the alien spaceship is an Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill. It may also emancipate ear tubes, which will cause a test subject to feel liquid running down their neck. If this happens, the test subject is to relax, lie on their back, and apply immediate pressure to their temples.

@@miguelsacramento4416 So you found a fishing boat in places thousands of miles from the ocean. I wish the maps made places at least look the part. One thing I love about XCOM 2. Assuming they don't have alien flora the away from a city maps look how they should for where you are.

In the zone is extremely situational in Xcom 1 as ur team could kill most of the enemy (the squishy ones) reliably. Double shot is for tougher stuff u would begin to face soon

Emela 'Herald' Winds, Personal Log #12 May 21, 1430 I have been at Xcom for a little over two months now and I am finally starting to feel like a properly contributing member of the staff. Central was alerted to a UFO that had landed in dense woodland somewhere in India (late at night, of course) and a team was scrambled. The Commander has grown very patient, enough so that some have taken to calling his decisions *too* conservative but this mission showed the value of it. None of the enemies we faced ever got the jump on the squad, everyone covered each others backs with overwatches and it resulted in no injuries. Robinson and Leigh got splashed by a Thin Man but they must have been exposed often enough now to have built up some tolerance because they seemed completely unharmed from it. I debate whether we should disclose that to the science team, Vahlen hasn't had much in the way of aliens to slice and dice of late and I don't want to give her any ideas. It feels so good to put forward strategies that actually come off! No surprises, just good, clear shots and solid results. The debrief was short and for the first time since I started doing it, I had a smile on my face as I waited for the Skyranger to return. Morale within the strategy team certainly feels like it has risen and judging by the jovial nature of the soldiers when they returned, it might be the same across the board. The new sniper did an admirable job and looks like he will be a great understudy to Laitinen. It *was* a bit of a shame the terrain didn't really suit proper sniping but that wasn't the new guys fault. I visited Laitinen again after the debrief (and took him another snack, of course!). I know he likes to work with the rest of the squad a long way in front, but even he must get lonely when stuck in a medbay cot with no one else around other than whichever medical officer Vahlen can spare at any given moment. I filled him in on how the latest mission went and how the new sniper performed. Thankfully, Laitinen will be back on his feet soon and if we get lucky, maybe even in time for the next mission. I made a stop at the range to warn the armourer that he was nearly back. He just chuckled and said he would ensure he bulked up his ammo reserves. If you thought a good mission meant good sleep, though, the Commander had other ideas. I hope this never gets out, but I think the Commander is like a kid in a candy store as soon as he gets a few dollars in his pocket. The excavations and constructions continue apace, so much so that they seem to be running out of hard hats, judging by how much dust and dirt those guys have in their hair whenever I see them in the mess hall. The ground lightly trembles near constantly with their work and it is making sleeping difficult right when my head is actually in a good place. I saw Vahlen on the way back to the barracks. Judging by the broad smile on her face, I can only assume the Alien Containment chamber has been completed. God help Central and the Commander if he doesn't bring something back alive next mission. Sniper with Gunslinger skill is probably your best option for Covert Ops, it ensures they can reliably deal damage to deal with enemies, and even more so if they have Double Tap. Once you get the pistol associated Foundry projects done too, they work on par with most of the other classes for damage.

Door Kickers 2 is definitely a thing, and the YT chanel you might have been referring to would be Controlled Pairs Gaming. The guy, I believe, was an ex-ranger, and plays tactical shooter and rts games. Would love to see you do a run-through of Door Kickers!

Nice run man, you blasted those Mutons into next week (lol) You're finally seeing a lot of high-powered soldier abilities now that will stabilize the squad I feel, notably the extra Field Medic too 👍 I really like that you're trying to plan strategically with the Thin Men, they can really be SUPER annoying. If you do decide to take a passive approach, the AI seems to be able to tell which soldiers have Medkits. To this day, I've never seen an X-COM soldier with a Medkit get hit with acid spit unless they are next to another target. What could be a good idea is to smoke grenade in HIGH cover at the front, and use supports with overwatch to bait them if you're going to let them go first. There doesn't seem to be any real way to consistently avoid poison unless you take the initiative. Thin men poison will continue to annoy you until you get Tier 3 armour, which makes all soldiers immune to poison (by which time Thin Men slowly start to disappear). I'd recommend moving more decisively to grenade/rocket them if you get the chance, or use Squadsight [Zone/Double Tap] sniper shots, or Assaults to rush them [Run & Gun]. Just my opinion, but with Mayhem on Heavies, if you don't have [Suppression] for guaranteed damage on target(s), I feel like the +2/3 damage from standard and Shredder Rockets **only** is a little limited on Impossible difficulty. Rockets do 6 damage (unless the enemy is next to an 'explosive' object), and they are usually already enough to blast apart any weaker enemies. Still, the one really good thing about getting Mayhem with the Shredder rocket is that you now have "6 damage" rockets in the mid-game, meaning they now do a standard rocket DMG in a MASSIVE radius with Danger Zone. Don't forget that [Heat Ammo] applies as well to your rockets, meaning they'll do +50% damage against robotic enemies, such as Seekers, as well as Cyberdiscs and Mechtoids, which will start becoming more common soon. (Sectopods eventually too). If they don't have suppression, consider Rocketeer, there's a big power creep in pod size due soon. Thanks again for the upload man, I'm really loving the run so far 🙂

Logistics Tactical Officer "Ruby" Log 18. Date: May 22, 2015. It's honestly such a relief that things went off on the last mission without much of an issue. I'm not sure why the aliens decided to land that UFO on the ground - whether it was by choice or by necessity, we don't know. What we do know is that recovering one of those intact - bar one of the rockets that got fired inside - gives us plenty of materials that the aliens can't use any longer. It wasn't as big as the one that we could've brought down earlier this month, but at least we managed to get something, at the very least that wasn't the battleship. I'm surprised by the fact that none of the troops had to go into sickbay after that mission. Some inhaled poison during that op, but I guess it's nothing a few antidotal herbs can't fix. Good thing, too - we can't afford to have too many people on the sidelines. Not with our desperate situation. One thing I noticed, however, was that these "Mutons" are capable of using different weapons. These ones on the last op had these smaller rifles, while the ones we encountered trying to stop us from capturing the battleship had much larger ones. It makes you think, doesn't it? Barring any disruptions from the aliens, our next objective should be figuring out what this "EXALT" is up to. They've raised propaganda in South Africa. Alien sympathizers? Really? They really want to give up Earth to these aliens? Have they even seen what they've done? I wouldn't have a problem putting another human into the ground myself. I hope the soldiers don't hesitate to pull the trigger out there.

the skyranger seems cursed to take the longest possible route to location Log time Personal Log of Micky “Frosty” Caldwell May 20th - May 25th New gal went out as the stealthy operative to hunt down Exalt, name was either Alex or Alexa? Maybe I’ll see her back in base in the future. Squad went out on a quick UFO run, had to double back for Cutter which was a bit funny. Small issues with poison spitters but nothing that wasn’t patched up by the time the got back. And flight computers and power cells galore, only one was broken! Boat load of elerium on top of it, don’t know what the Commander is going to do with all that stuff but I got a feeling it’ll be some variant of explosive. Also what in the world is my sleep schedule anymore, it’s damn near 3 in the morning and I’m just going to be awake for the next few hours running reports and supplies. Is it really my job to restock the coffee cupboard in the engineering break room? Three years of unfinished engineering degree hasn’t magically squished itself down into three months though so I don’t think I’ll be getting anything fancier then this. Stealth gal called in for a pickup, already found what she needed to. Best of luck to the squad, I’m debating finding a nice table to hide under for a quick nap.

*Entry Log # 015* 2015/05/21 No rest for the wicked as they say, a large scout alien airship was detected landing in India and taking advantage of that opportunity XCOM dispatched a group of operatives to subdue the crew and capture it. After a weird tactical decision to send a team, call them back to HQ, and send them again with a slight change of roster, operation Blind Flame started, with all 6 operatives being armored with carapace armor, newly made from the last spoils. The outer patrol of thin men and seekers was eliminated with minimal injuries, and inside the ship there was heavier guard of floaters and mutons, plus the outsider, that were also dealt with swiftly (while resorting to reckless use of rockets, my partner almost skyrocketed the price of Zhang’s underworld bounty for such act). All around a great performance, that may have improved troop morale with how flawlessly it went. New bloods were taken in to refill the depleted roster, and while XCOM has gone through such depletion, they still have a lot of dangerous elements in their squads, notably Colonels Jube and Robinson, who have proven deadly killing machines against aliens and, consequently, EXALT operatives, and the bonus for their confirmed death may still go up even further. Log 9 Date: 21st May, 2015 Name: Juuso “Jube” Laitinen Episode: An Inopportune Reveal Log start Well, I'm still stuck in the infirmary. It's been a few days, and I'm honestly going stir crazy. Herald came to visit and told me about the new sniper and how the mission went. It was good to see her smile again. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to manage one myself yet. She also brought me some snacks, which was much appreciated. I was thinking about giving her Cray's dog tag, but I forgot it in the moment. It makes sense, though - she knew Cray better than I did. We only met at the shooting range, but we were friends nonetheless. I still feel terrible about him being gone. If she doesn't want the dog tag, I'll hold onto it for now. Went to the shooting range again today. Didn't hit as many targets as I'd like, but it's a work in progress. Here's hoping I don't end up like Cray. Also visited Bob and Jeff. We ended up making some food together while I chatted with them about what they did before the war. Turns out, they're both chefs! Bob used to work at a hotel, and Jeff cooked for the army. I shared my grandmother's sausage soup recipe, or "makkarakeitto" as the Finns call it. They seemed to enjoy it, and I have to agree - it is good. Seems like I'm the only one left in the infirmary now. Hopefully, Herald visits again soon so I can ask her about the dog tag. Well, that's all for now. Gotta go. Peace out. Log end

Good job commander 🙂 I don't think Supports are weak, because they have other uses. They are very good at collecting meld because of more mobility. Especially if you have mimetic skin. Then you can get meld on every ufo mission. And good call on building the gen lab. It is so useful to get some of those improvement. You should also be aware that taken aliens alive also get you the aliens weapons - so you don't have to buy those when times come to plasma.

I'm not sure Thin Men target units who are immune (which would include anyone holding a medkit) so I'm not sure trying to tick them into spitting on medics is really a strategy.

While it is marginally true that what you say about overwatching versus hunkering, you are still better off overwatching. The best defense is a good offense, and that means dealing damage. Every untaken overwatch is potential damage that you miss out on. And that missed damage could be the difference between someone dying or not. The best way to stay safe is killing them before they kill you. What I find funny and a bit frustrating is that you understood that way back when. Yes I know it's been at least 8 years, but what surprises me is that you've played so much XCOM in the past that this should be coming back in, like, a flash. Either way, loving the campaign so far! Best of luck on the Exalt mission.

In the zone always worked better for me than double tap. Nothing beats having a sniper being able to cleanup multiple weak enemies after dropping a rocket on a pod. Double tap just can’t clean house like in the zone. Disabling shot helps cover lack of double tap, just use that as crowd control on single enemy rather than have access to being able to shoot twice every other turn.

There's a good argument to be made for a snapshot sniper in this campaign. Maybe not for your 2nd sniper, but for your 3rd. With absolutely critical, having a quick sniper which can flank and take that snapshot could be extremely useful.

Outstanding series, and now you have me playing EW again both on my PC and on my iPad. But not on Impossible. 😂 For covert missions, I usually send the lowest ranked Assault or just a rookie. My general EW approach involves (among other things) hiring lots of soldiers and dismissing any with an aim of 60 or 55. I'll buy like 10 right at the start of the game and use the highest aim ones on the early missions. That way, as the game goes forward, my most senior soldiers usually have aims of 70 or more, and I'll end up with snipers with aim >100. Speaking of snipers, I really like Double Tap, but I suspect either of those end-level skills are great.

Snipers make awesome Covert ops with the pistol damage skill... and if you give them Mimetic skin ALL cover will let them become invisible cause low profile turns half cover into full. Makes them amazing scouts and their lower health is less of a problem.

Having loved the old gameplays, It's interesting that it's easy to tell it's been quite a while for you, it's kinda like a new experience but it's not! Loving it btw, not a diss! Love there's finally more sniper support! (Gussy "Lady Grey" Toughson still your best sniper in History!)

In my experience supports are great for flanking maneuvers. They have better aim than the heavies and have similar or better movement than the assaults. And since they carry med kits they have the potential to heal themselves in tough spots. So I tend to be more aggressive with my supports. But having a barracks full of them is less than ideal when you really need a sniper or a rocket...

Him prefering the pistol is fine. I seem to remember that I always had a pistol sniper to go on those covert operations (in both games?) so they have the best utility with the only weapon they get.

This operation went pretty well! We'll have to see how Exalt goes for you Odd, hopefully some nice Exalt weapons can be gained to help boost our heavies a little since I recall their conventional weaponry is a little stronger than Xcom's starting weapons in base EW. The latest operation took place in a bigger UFO, not as big as the one the pilots couldn’t take down but a bigger scout class that landed in India, it was decided that the potential resource gain would help us a lot combined with our recent Battleship Haul. Robinson took charge of Strike-1…it’s been awhile since she has, the rest of the squad consisted of Cutter, Zhang, Leigh, Deniel and our new sniper recruit Ozzy Mellioria, another Canadian with an interesting backstory! Although it seems the database system screwed up and set his country-flag to something else, which resulted in the wrong flag ending up on his uniform. New guy was a bit of a sharp shot with that laser pistol and ironically even more so than with that sniper rifle! Besides some issues with Thin Man poison it was a clean operation, even taking out a group of Mutons very swiftly! That is the Xcom I know we can all be, Commander giving it his best as always Commander saw it fit to promote Robinson to Xcom’s Colonel rank…very proud of her having gone that far, she’s seen a lot and done a lot, out of all of our roster she deserves it the most as she’s the only one left from the very start, well besides the former Delta 2 but last I heard his efforts in Argentina aren’t going entirely smoothly, but he’s still kicking and helping out his military. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Our Covert Operative Alexa Durant has found a cell of those traitorous Exalt, so Commander Odd has mobilized Strike-1 to safely recover our operative. The squad lineup of this operation is much the same but trading Cutter for our newest heavy Georgina Magallanes who uh…looks like she’s seen a lot of shit, but I know that provides some hardened soldiers so I got faith in the new recruits. May these traitors be stopped, Junior Officer Jayko signing out, Vigilo Confido!

In the zone has been good to me for finishing off drones and other units that don't take cover. You can chain a cyberdisk or a beserker in that too if you set it up right. Situational but a huge trump card when it lands.

With decent aim, the battle medic can be really good with their overwatch perks. Does great with laser weapons because of the aim bonus.

If I remember right if you take damage equal to the soldier's armor but not go into the hp of the soldier than there is no wound time. So Leigh can take 8 damage (total i think) before needing to go into the hospital.

Don't forget, UFO's always have a pilot. First outsiders, then Sectoid commanders and later Ethereals, or Elders if you prefer.

Gotta say Odd, I've never seen or played an enemy within campaign this brutal with the rapid back to back missions and enemy a.i. plays. I can't wait to see when the Sectopods come in

One of the things that's cool about Long War is that soldier HP is separated between armor and health. If you take damage that doesn't go past your armor HP and eat into your life, you don't suffer any wound time in the medbay ;)

base game has that as well I think. I had multiple soldiers who were hit but came back uninjured probably because of the armour (especially mechs)

I often use 2 support units in my squad once I have lasers or plasma. I have mobility on at least one, so they have movement, good support reaction abilities, and the bonus of lots of healing, if necessary. Until I have mechs, I'll usually have 2 support, 2 snipers (with laser or plasma, otherwise 2 heavies), 1 heavy, and 1 attack.

I think that's the 1st time I've ever seen a whole pod so eager to be slaughtered like this : suicide charge in the whole squad overwatching, then retreat in the open !? Must be that the RNG thought it was time to be nice for once. Next mission should be easy, starting exalt are really weak but there are lots of them, it should be good to farm XP.

Did you see the XCOM enemy within theory where you destroy exalt and destroy the command centre which is just like yours, it's the aliens going through your mind to figure out how to destroy the XCOM base that's why it fell you destroyed it

With regards to your overwatch comment, if you overwatch there is a chance to hit, if you hunker there is zero chance to hit. Or to quote the armed forces "Accuracy through volume of fire"

I seem to remember that the best soldier type to use for covert missions was the Sniper, since they can get teh Gunslinger trait. Unfortunately, you haven't been very lucky recruiting Snipers, so....

Honestly, you should probably put a medkit on all of your squad member instead of a second grenade, just for the poison immunity... plus, more medkits = more healing and more chances to revive someone that goes down.

Nice mission. In terms of combat capability it feels the weakest, but, the high mobilty (especially with absolute critical) and their utility with carrying 3 medktis for the team i love supports and think they're not to be underestimated. Especially later on, when your soldiers armor prevent injuries when healed before getting to the core HP. Can't remember, maybe Supports will be good mechs? I'm soooo looking forward to mechs. :) I'm the in the zone type but i do understand your decision. And, to be fair, sometimes you kill a target and in the zone doesn't proc cause you didn't notice something not triggering it and you relied on it, leaving you in a tricky spot. That will not happen with double tap at all. Fair and simple, 2 shots and that's it.

i just had a thought. when some countrys leave the xcom profect, do you not get soldiers from those countrys anymore? of course a soldier from country x could be on vacation in country y and join you, even if country x leaves the project, but what are the chances... have you ever noticed something in that regard?

both of those and many other enemies work with in the zone. It's absurdly good, and you still get a normal shot after the free ones and ammo conservation makes it better

I really want to play XCOM Enemy Unknown/Within again but I just can't. Has anyone else who has tried playing it again experienced constant crashes? Load save; crash. Nade; crash. Rocket; crash. Skip cutscene; crash. Essentially anything other than starting the game from beginning and doing nothing but shooting crashes my game. Is this happening to others? Just me? I'd really like to know.

I guess my question would be, is relying so much on Heavy's every mission really the optimal action. they miss so many shots as their aim isnt the best,. I have typically ran multiple Assaults (with laser rifle) that have good aim, and seem to do better on hitting more shots. But Im no expert...just a thought lol

taking an arc thrower on the exalt mission is prettu useless since when u use it on tem they kill themselves and if ur getting in that close its ideally for a flanked crit shot

The rust is real. It's been years for me too, but doesn't poison stay active on the ground for a couple of turns, and then 2 turns after you move out of poison? By staying in the poison cloud, I think you lose one extra health on your guys.
