As someone who is just about to start studying " An Inspector Calls", I found this very useful in helping me to understand different aspects of the play through the context, which brought up points that I had not thought of before.

I'm glad the context shed light on the play for you - hopefully my other AIC videos will further enhance your study of the play too! 😁

Does anyone know what the inspector calls question was on 2023 paper???

Could you argue that the inspector is above upper class, as if he is the “ghoul” that brings judgement over the higher classes?
@DystopiaJunkie
@DystopiaJunkie 4 ай бұрын
That's a cool idea, but "above" might be a bit of a push. Him wearing a "plain darkish suit" suggests he isn't the Birlings' equal in terms of wealth, let alone their superior, while him being in a skilled professional job probably puts him below Mr Birling (business owner). You could maybe say that he's a "ghoul" that sits OUTSIDE of class boundaries, though, and serves to remind the audience that nobody is "above the law".

It'll be tough, Molly - I don't even remember the last time I read either of those! But I'll see what I can do (can't make any promises though - I want to get ACC and R+J and Macbeth done too)!

Wait Brumley doesn't mean Birmingham? here we all call Birmingham Brumley?

Ooh that's interesting - where's 'here', if you don't mind me asking? Birmingham is often called Brum, but I've never heard it be called Brumley before (and I've been living in Birmingham for the last 18 months)!

is there some way to say that an author zooms out and shows how common the situation is, like in a language paper i told a horrific story of police brutality then gave a statistic saying '[name] was one of 11 to die in Detroit in that weekend's riots]'. If there is a technique for that I could write about Brumley as well as 'there are millions of Eva smiths and john smiths' showing that this is a personification of society rather than one extreme story.

@@DystopiaJunkie Selly oaks in Birmingham, someone from Birmingham is a Brummer, Birmingham is Brum and the more central area near Selfridges is Brumley

Ooh that's really interesting (and as if you're in Selly!!) - I'll have to see if some of my friends who have been around here for longer call it that. I wonder if that's because the city centre is a bit more built up and so it's almost a joke about it being a bit 'fancy'? Certainly it's a very very specific piece of regional slang!
