I think of terrain association as getting me to the right mountain, and dead reckoning as getting me to a pinpoint location. Thanks Stoker.

Can you do this without a protractor and without a any known locations including your own?
@STOKERMATIC9 ай бұрын
Protractor isn’t needed for most actual navigation needs. If current location is unknown, use resection. You can use intersection to at least understand a few things (if I can determine a distant objects location, I can somewhat infer my own).

4/26/2022 Dead reckoning. for me is; I am here, I'm not sure where. I know that here is a road, railroad, or water course, running generally east/ west to my south, how far, I don't know, but if I walk south I will eventually hit that feature, then other decisions are considered. Terrain association, would be adding a map or compass, or map and compass to help reach that same feature. Some 50+ years ago while a was in the Navy, I attended a class to become an instructor. I met a man who was on the aggressor team at Camp Pendleton's SEER school. I learned my dead reckoning method from him, it has made a difference at least twice. I made it out with just a bit of stumbling about and then OH I know where I am now, no guessing. Another great video, clearing the air a little.

Oh boy! ded or dead reckoning! Reminds me of a quote from the ancient law of the sea! “It is established for a custom of the sea that if a ship is lost by default of the lodesman, the mariners may if they please, bring the lodesman to the windlass and cut off off his head without the mariners being bound to answer to any judge, because the lodesman had committed high treason against the undertaking of the pilotage, and this is the judgment.” 1. The Laws of Oleron, 1190 as quoted in Schofield

Hey brother. I failed a no map, distance and direction compass course today (distance direction from sp to P1 and then it lists a d&d for point two). Any advice for getting better at longer distance dead reckoning? 400-900m? Heavy and thick underbrush, dense and flat environment

Make sure you know if they are giving you a magnetic azimuth or not. Even if they aren’t giving you a map, don’t assume. Use steering marks in front of you and at your back azimuth as well. Check these out kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4W7Z2mQbMatZ5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4nWg4yFirqJe8U

I sometimes take a bearing (which gives me a line) and an estimation of distance (which gives me a circle) and the intersection of line and circle is my location. For distance I like to use a calculator because it's already difficult enough. I consider a calculator a serious navigation tool. I'm curious about your opinion Stoker. Good video! 👍👌.
