Hi Benfree, Maslow has come in for a lot of criticism over the years because his theory was deemed a bit simplistic, my interpretation is that the bottom of the triangle refers to biological imperatives, and to that end the need to reproduce is high on most species agenda, without sexual reproduction extinction beckons.. just ask the pandas!!

Please be aware that Abraham Maslow repudiated his ideas especially for the classroom and for children. He died with many regrets and misgivings. The research data showed that his ideas in the classroom were devastating. Read about it in HIDDEN DANGER IN THE CLASSROOM, by Pearl Evans.

I'm just discovering Maslow myself. I googled self self esteem, becuase I need to work on myself esteem .Anything you can recommend? I see a psychiatrist, but I realize that in the end self esteem, like enlightenment must come from the individual that is searching for it.

Slightly surprised to see Sex as among the baseline, along with air,water and food. Many people dont seem to care about sex, or at least not throughout their ages..

In this context, "Sex", is meant as a means of reproduction. Lust is simply fuel for the biological imperative to propagate our species. Lust is a tool. And you are correct, Christianity has co-opted "Lust", and has used it as a different kind of tool - but so has every other major Religion. Personally, I believe most people have a great deal of "Good" to do in order to balance the scale. Finding, and listening my conscience is the only true peace I've found. But honestly, what do I know?

I agree that sex is a basic human need, so why is it then that porn is frowned upon? Christianity is to blame, because of the stupid idea that Lust is one of the seven deadly sins. What a load of nonsense!
