I remember being told when performing early music to always smile. It creates a brightness to the tone which this group demonstrates perfectly

At first I heard Gaudete sung by Steeleye Span in the early 70s. For a long time this was the only version I knew. And I really loved it. Then - mainly because of KZbin - I heard other versions of this song but they all sounded inferior to me. Some didn't seem to have the right tempo for me others didn't have the right mood. But this performance is amazing! The tempo is perfect, the voices are wonderful and the whole mood just gives me goosebumps. I truly appreciate this.

Individually the singers may have spiritual leanings, but Anúna is not in any way religious. If our performances engender a spiritual response that is great, but it was not nor will ever be the motivation behind the ensemble.

@anunachoir6 жыл бұрын
Well - the arrangement is lower so they are more evident, but the pronunciation here is more in line with standardised Latin. The other one has something else though :-)
@princepis2 жыл бұрын
I don’t hear a problem with the pronunciation. It sounds like ecclesiastical pronunciation. Which makes sense since it’s a traditional Christian carol.
@michaelrex69482 жыл бұрын
@@princepis It's mostly fairly good Ecclesiastical Latin. The first verse, though, "Tempus adest", one could complain that they don't pronounce it as a "tsi" when "t" appears before "i" (e.g., gratiæ and lætitiæ). It wouldn't hurt to roll the "r"s a bit more as well, but on the whole it's good pronunciation. Steeyle Span is, of course, the perfect example of pronunciation that deserves to be complained about... This, thankfully, is miles ahead of that atrocity in every conceivable sense.
@benjamin_markus Жыл бұрын
@@princepis the main problematic parts are the 'te' at the end of gaudete, there's no need for that palatalization of the t sound. the biggest mistake which I actually find painful and a bit inexplicable is the pronounciation of 'virgine' where the g is pronounced like it was an English word, while in Latin it's just a pure g sound from the throat, like at the beginning of gaudete. as these are amongst the most frequently sung parts of the song, they should be corrected.
@oldwest517 Жыл бұрын

Near perfection! Correct pitch and speed shows great care and respect given by its arranger. Most of the examples on KZbin are performed at the pace of a Buzzcocks song, rather than that of a medievel hymn. Or, unfortunately are poor recordings of otherwise excellent performances. This is by far the best performance available on KZbin.
@anunachoir2 жыл бұрын
Actually this version has quite a bit in common with the Buzzcocks. The setting is not an issue, it's not conducted and Anúna focus on text transmission above all so the story is the key. As with Buzzcocks.

I suppose in some ways you are right. The difference is plain though as far as we are concerned. The recent version has the correct Latin, and the bulk of the performers are actually professional musicians who aspire to making a living as such even if they don't.

Pardon me All religious ceremony was based in performance. The mass itself is a "show" with characters and a plot. I think you are confusing meditation with ceremony. Both can co-exist. And should or else we are singular, isolated entities outside of society.

Comments often left for performances of this carol remark on the Latin pronunciation of the performers, good or bad. For centuries, scholars and certain members of the clergy made use of impeccably pronounced Church Latin, but many average parish priests did not, nor did most lay people. When we hear "Gaudete" sung with less than perfect Latin, we're hearing what our ancestors likely most often heard. No matter though - the meaningfulness of carols is ultimately in the words and the intent of the singers - giving glory to God - or simply rejoicing - not in the perfect pronunciation of a language which, when "perfect", might make even the ancient Romans shake their heads. Has anyone heard ancient Romans speaking Latin? Exactly, so we argue "Sis-er-oh" versus "Kick-er-oh". :)
