I vaguely remember a MLB game where the two managers were idly chatting before they finalised their lineup cards and gave them to the umpire, when they decided to immediately trade players - the two players had to go the clubhouse, get changed, then go to the other clubhouse and get changed into their new uniforms.
@coopercharneco80245 жыл бұрын
A similar situation happened last year to Juan Soto. When the nationals played the Yankees he wasn’t in the mlb yet, but when the game got postponed he hit a home run. So technically his first hit was before he was even called up to the MLB.
@Rockhound61655 жыл бұрын
On a similar note, in 1979, the Phillies and Mets were playing a double header. In between games, Jose Carenal was traded from the Phillies to the Mets and played for both teams on the same night. Also, in 1982, Joel Youngblood has the distinction of getting a hit for 2 different teams playing in different cities on the same day. He was on the Mets playing a day game in Chicago. He got a hit. After the game he was traded to the Expos who were in Philly so he flies to Philly and singles for the Expos that night. Incidentally, both of his hits came off of eventual Hall of Famers(Fergie Jenkins & Steve Carlton).

Actually Harvey Catchings (another great NBA name) and Ralph Simpson both played on both sides in the game as well; Eric Money was the only one who scored as a member of both teams. And the fourth traded player, Al Skinner, played for _neither_ team - that is didn't play in the game in the original version nor in the resumed, alternate-reality one - making him, to my knowledge, the only player to record a DNP for both teams in a single game.

On June 26, 2024, Danny Jansen was batting for the Blue Jays vs. Red Sox. During the at bat, the game was delayed and later suspended for rain, to be made up on August 26th. in soccer, clubs will often loan out players to other teams, usually to give youngsters playing experience. When this happens, there is often a clause in the loan deal that prohibits that player from playing against the "parent" club. This kind of contract clause also can exist for outright transfers. I feel like something resembling this should have been discussed in this nba game.

You covered the handling of the technical fouls given, but what did they do about the other fouls? Did Eric Money keep any fouls he committed as a Net when he joined the Sixers for the replay? Did they just reset those normal fouls he could theoretically commit more than six fouls that game? Did they reset everyone's fouls? I need more!
@andrewbrown7845 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing! Presumably, they treat him like a new player for the 76ers, so he could have committed up to 12 fouls (if he fouled out for both teams). But what if the ejected player had been the one traded? Would he get a fresh set of fouls? Also, which team pays Money's game check? Need more information!!!

I remember reading the completed box score for this game. Strange to see the name Eric Money on both sides of the ledger. Richie Powers was a total take-charge referee. He probably had good intentions when he called the third technical foul on Bernard King, to punish another unsportsmanlike act in full view of everyone. But he should have just included his description of the post-ejection chair kicking as part of his report to the league office. It likely would have meant a higher fine, possibly a suspension, for King. But then incident would have been over. But Powers broke a cardinal rule of officiating: Never create a protest scenario.

I think, ironically the protest rule is a hilarious gold mine for weird interactions. The only other time I can remember it ever being used is in 2006 or 07 with the Miami Heat. Shaq "fouls out" with only 5 fouls. Miami protests and yes, gets the game replayed from the moment their player was tossed too early. Of course, in the intervening months Shaq was traded to Phoenix. So Miami is playing a game again because they did not have access to Shaq for the last minute or so, without access to Shaq.

This reminds me of a Nationals game last year. The Nationals started a game with the Yankees, at this time Juan Soto was still in Minor League Baseball. In the middle of the game it started raining then they decided to make up the game on a later date. When they make up the game, Juan Soto is now on the big league roster, so he pinch-hits in the make up game and hits a home run. So he homered in a game that started before his Big League debut.

A similar thing happened during the 07-08 season with the Hawks and Heat. No one was traded between the teams, but Shaq had been traded to the Suns and he was the player responsible for the redo (he got called for his sixth foul and it should have been his fifth), so in the redo, Shaq couldn't play anyway, since he was now a Phoenix Sun. Shawn Marion did get to play in the redo, thus meaning that, due to a technicality, he was teammates with Shaq for one game, which came up again when the streak of consecutive champions with ex-teammates of Shaq's went viral back in 2015 or 2016.

This happened in the MLB too. It was the Pirates vs Cardinals (I think). One guy started the game for I think the Pirates. His team takes the lead, then it rains. The game is suspended and would be finished later in the year, but the pitcher got traded to the Cardinals, and the Pirates won, so he got the win while playing for the losing team
