To be fair it wasnt for furries at first to begin with. In places like japan anthropomorphic fiction is all the rage (in fact what's considered the first manga ever made a few centuries ago was a tale about anthropomorphic rabbits and frogs) without so much as knowing what the furry community even is. Heck the author didnt even know until after the series was done and now she's attending fur cons, so make of that what you will.

For centuries all around the world anthropomorphic animals have been present in works. Egypt had entire gods/goddesses that were portrayed as bipedal animals. Many Native American stories present animals with human thought, communication, and emotion. Etcetera, etcetera. Using animals in stories and media is almost as old as human thought itself. It just so happens that in the 80s someone came up with a word for someone who enjoyed and wrote stories of their own anthropomorphic animals. All in all, it's completely normal. The stigma in the west and in internet culture really just comes from people seeing the negatives before the positives, and to be brutally honest most of the issues in the furry fandom really isn't much different than what goes on in other fandoms.

This actually tackles a very problematic thing about japan, when there is something uncomfortable to discuss, they'd rather not talk about it at all and choose to avoid whenever possible. Beastars on the other hand, is absolutely straightforward in showing how fear of vulnerability is what causes it in the first place, and goes on a loop, there is something about the culture of respect they have that really does make it seem like a prey vs predator type deal. Amazing job dude!~

In another way, it's also tackling their (as well as most east asian countries) issue with racial purity. Being mixed race in Japan is definitely looked down upon, especially by the older generations. Thankfully that's something being tackled by two of their most successful athletes, Naiomi Osaka (half Haitian) and Rui Hachimura (half African) Beastars as a whole is a great commentary on Japanese culture as a whole, as well as being an absolutely phenomenal show

I completely agree. The only thing I hate about Beastars is the ending. Louis just effectively rejects his entire character growth, we never get any answers about Legosi and Haru and the whole answer to the Herbivore-Carnivore question is a cheap cop out.

The way that Beastars concluded felt like Paru just wanted to end the series after the Melon arc but realized that there where a ton of loose threads that needed to be dealt with, but only manages to cover some of them. One example, that organization of bats that had their sights on hybrids, particularly that instance where Gosha defended a bunch of hybrid children from a bat posing as their janitor. They are never brought back after those chapters were they're introduced. Part of the problem seems to be that Paru kept adding story elements/ideas/concepts to explore but then didn't know how to do so, to the point that some become completely forgotten. Then the ones that are remembered, but not had any real development, are given rather unsatisfying payoffs. It's like she kept throwing things in to see if they could potentially work, and only develops the ones that helped to move things along. Or she introduces things as a setup for a later payoff, but then the story ends up developing in a different way than intended, and the payoff becomes lost. There seemed to be some kind constant shifting in how the story was developing as Paru kept having to figure out how the series should progress. It makes me wonder if Paru didn't know where to go after the Melon arc, and decided to just end things there. But yeah, "That's it?" was very much what I said to myself when reading the ending. Paru had built too many things up for it all to just end like that.

To be fair I've always wondered if Paru didn't wanted to continue for arc or two more, but then for some reason had to finish the series. I really was expecting that figuring out how to make life work without back alley market and tying loose ends about where characters would end would be last arc on to itself, as well as maybe further exploration of adult life. Hell, we've found out what "beastars" mean almost at the end of the story. It really feels like there was arc or two missing

I get the sense that, towards the end, there was a lot of editorial changes and influences, which would explain why characters and conflicts that are introduced but not seen again. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case because it was veering into a shonen story arc a bit (which is probably one of the "safer" kinds of formulaic genres out there to executives that run manga and anime businesses, similar to isekai). Beastars is a series that touches on what would be sensitive topics in Japan subtly (such as how gender roles are viewed traditionally, the way minorities and women are treated, and how people that are mixed race are looked down at), so I bet there was some old executives or editors or somebody that was getting a little uncomfortable at where the story was going and wanted to change things to make it "palatable" for readers.

To me it really feels like there was arc or two missing. Even during final arc, Paru just kept adding more and more loose ends, and introducing characters that could possibly be supporting cast later down the line. 9 and 3 would be great when exploring back alley market, now that it has been revealed to public. Maybe instead completely getting rid of the place, dedicate part of an arc to trying and make it work within the law. Character resolutions is another point that we just needed to see more. How come Luis ended up back in the corporation? What of Legoshi and Haru now that they're officially dating? Juno? What about Jack? And we still don't really know what the heck title means. Or who will become the beastar. What is a job of a beastar? Is it always just being vigilante, or the way of being a beastar depends on individual? Bats? What of them? And I'm not bitter because I want to see more of this super well crafted world. I want more world AND answers.

Legosi ends up fighting the Predator leaders in a gang war in the span of 1-2 chapters each, one time wearing a dress & high heels. It doesn't matter. Legosi beats Melon. It doesn't matter and the series just abruptly ends right after that

I've felt the fish sausage underminds everything that ever happened with the conflict the carnivores would face. Obviously, the seal foreshadowed it as sea life have a much simple approach of life and even believe in reincarnation, but why was seafood never brought up beforehand when the whale appeared and stopped the Carni-Herbie war? Kyu also felt like a waste of time with Imaginary Chimera only existing as a test to show if Legoshi would still commit to Haru, rather than something he would use against Melon as they're both chimeras.

I think there's a lot of male/female allegory in Beastars. Especially with how rapey some of the dialogue from the initial predator sounds or how Legosi seems to be confused if he wants to eat Haru or sleep with her. And there's also the design of herbivores being mostly lithe and feminine while predators are big and manly (compare Legosi to Louis and contrast with real size difference between a gray wolf and a red deer, the latter being up three times heavier than the former IRL).

I don’t know if this was said by melon himself or by jack when talking to legoshi about the herbivore-carnivore war, but they mention how carnivores never ate herbivore meat until AFTER the war, and I think that’s why paru may have ended the black market the way she did. This does seems to clear up the reason behind her choice, however I do believe the way you thought it was going to happen made more sense, in the real world carnivores have always eaten meat so I do believe it would have made more sense if it went the way you said. (But I mean this is the same show where legoshi literally turns into a bunch of months in the middle of the ritz fight so I dunno at this point man)

Legosi befriending Sagwan was what most likely helped the sea life want to deal with the land life by deporting meat for them. A shark hearing "I am friends with spotted seal" from a wolf was MAJOR, as it meant a true friendship was made between a land creature and a sea creature. This was an extra layer with Legosi's want for the world for preds and prey to accept each other and safely be friends and such (for both HIS personal world AND society as a whole). But Legosi and Sagwan get no credit. And the BIG BIG BIG buildup of the ancient whale talking with the beastar and dropping the news of "hey we don't make death a big deal and fully accept the circle of life so we'll process our dead to be your food" just...didn't go anywhere. No major announcement. No massive freak out of the animal committee with THE BIGGEST society changing thing being dropped on them. No announcement of meat markets not being needed now that preds can safely consume meat for nourishment and to sate their hunting instincts. I was waiting for more to come from it, especially learning that over time, the more prehistoric preds devolved in size due to trying to cull their meat diet and low-key domesticized themselves over the generations JUST to show they're willing to change themselves and make a conjoined society with the prey. But...yeah....majorly disappointed in that. I thought Legosi making friends/having a love life with prey folk AND befriending someone from the sea would have made him the beastar for sure, but the dude gets nothing... The ending could have been worse, but it sure as hell could have been better too. Also majorly disappointed that you indulged in gushing over this manga/anime and yet didn't make a fursona avi like you did dressing up with your 'Fairy Tail' overview. BOOOOOOOO. Shoulda drew yourself up/comished a set of furry pics to use you coward =V

I'll be honest and admit that in my head Louis followed his own path and got together with Juno. The pair of them have such amazing chemistry that i was rooting for them just as much as I was rooting for Haru and Legoshi. So that ending was heartbreaking. Overall I still love Beastars and it become one of my favorite anime.

Very fascinating series, and It did lead me to wonder the ideas and possible concepts this series can hold. There is even one Human OC who like Gohan the panda is a predator psychoanalyst and even rehabilitate preds, but rarely use force, odd but realistic logic to help. Leading to help the best he can for pred and prey kind. But it's up to there choice if they want to live there path. But he was not popular as I hope, so I switched.

Man all the characters are just a cool, and their own stories, the art style, literally all of it is just so cool and interesting. I agree with everything you said in the video, cons and pros. But really beastars is just so interesting. All of the dedication between the characters and complications is just great. Besides the ending, no offense but it was kinda disappointing imo-

Honestly the animated series really creeped me out and after a certain point we had to stop watching because of the sexual content and the dynamic between predator and prey in that sense. I definitely wouldn't suggest this series to anyone who's experienced trauma where they felt preyed upon. There were definitely things I liked about the series or I wouldn't have kept watching until mentioned point. Maybe I'll try continuing since I got a taste of what's after what I saw (and am in a better place)

Louis does start to take his relationship with his wife seriously at the end. He offers her a date despite it not having any value for the company, showing that they may end up in an actual loving relationship down the line. Additionally, she did try multiple times to interact with him to deepen their relationship.

@@greywolf845 You forget that this was RIGHT AFTER Juno kissed him. Plus, Louis has always had a complex view on carnivores. He wasn't in the right mind set at the time. He wanted to try and make his fiance happy, but forcing one's self to 'perform' under a lot of stress and anxiety would make anyone sick. And it is shown directly after that she was with him the entire time he was ill. It might be a political marriage, but that doesn't mean actual feelings can't be involved.

To be fair Luis is a good guy. He either started to feel something to his now wife, or he's asking her out just for her comfort. Either way, he does care about her, even if not in a way he's apparently supposed to. And who knows, maybe he'll manage to open up to her as well. I'm just wondering what lead him to accept his arranged marriage. That would be nice to know

I used to love Beastars, but during the Melon arc problems started piling on and on until I started questioning the world. Many of the themes are contradictory, the worldbuilding colapses on itself, and I just can't keep thinking that, as much as I hate to admit it, Zootopia did it better.

I hate when people attempt to correct you - even though it’s not - when it comes to Legosi’s name. The name comes from Bella Legosi, a very famous actor that played the Wolfman in the black and white movie of the same name. It’s not Legoshi and neither do the characters actually say that, it’s just how they pronounce it because little known fact, the Japanese way of pronunciation involves saying the whole world at relatively close intervals - unlike in English, words aren’t stressed and they’re pushed out much faster, so to facilitate this certain letters merge and it creates slightly different sounds, (in short, it’s Legosi not Legoshi).
