@@nativetexanful It was shown over here for the first time in 1986. I thought I'd hate it as it was a love story, but then realised it was just as much about Richard Gere overcoming his problems to become an officer.

@@Glenn1967ful It was more than just a love story. Zack, the character Richard Gere portrayed and his friend Sid had opposite issues. Zack needed to think more of other people and Sid needed to think more of himself.

@@nativetexanful Zack Mayo had a terrible upbringing, but was also arrogant and selfish. He was basically turned around by the drill instructor and made a better perrson. Sid wanted to go in the Navy because his brother was a pilot and had been killed in Nam. However, he wasn't quite officer material and had been tricked by a money grubbing local girl.
