Honestly, besides the graphical glitches, the biggest problem that makes this way too easy is that you can hit any block to cancel the effect. What added challenge to An Ordinary Sonic Romhack was that monitors were pretty scarce throughout the zones, and the fact that the switch to the hellish world was random. There are waaaay more blocks in New Super Mario Bros than there are monitors in Sonic 1, even in endgame levels. My solution to fix this would to only hit question mark blocks to deactivate the effect. For an even greater challenge, get a powerup to disable the effect or an extra life via a mushroom or 100 coins.

Im pretty sure that the time before it switches in ordinary sonic hack isn't random, but it does get a lot shorter in the later zones. To the point where after a certain point, you get to spend like a second in the normal level before spoooky mode reactivates.

I feel like if the mod was regulated to ? Blocks only to comw back to the normal world that would add way more challenge. The reason an ordinary sonic hack worked so well was because the game basically forced you to learn the different paths of sonic 1 to collect the monitors, also the rings were sonics lifeline so making them backwards in the exe world was smart in making the player more susceptible to dying by an error. You also couldnt kill enemies in the exe world no matter what you had. In marios case theres more to consider since smb gameplay only really relies on mario being able to take 2 hits before dying on the third. Boss fights look unfinished as theres not really a way to come back to the normal world unless you cheese that fire flower or you just beat the boss fast enough. There shoulda been something where if you end up there and youre fighting the boss they drop a flower upon getting hit. I also dont think mario should be able to kill the otherworld enemies but he should still be able to bounce off their heads for a fair advantage, and if anything was able to kill then the mega mushroom would be that powerup since its not even in many levels to be a straight up cheat code.

I used the 16:10 setting for the top screen. I noticed there were small black bars around the edges. So I slightly adjust the width of the video and stretch it so it covers the whole video. There is a widescreen patch for NSMB, but it won’t be compatible with this xdelta patch

if there's an advise for any update I'd give you is that you nerf the the world system, given how easy it is to escape Luigi by hitting any block in the game regardless if it's a block with a power up, a coin or a breakable one. a possible solution? you have it right in front of you, the power ups such as the super mushroom, the fire flower, the star, any power up, since they're the equivalent to the monitors in the Sonic games
