His bit about "Health Bar Whack a Mole" reminds me of doing the final boss of Tales of Vesperia WAAAY under-leveled. Its a pretty great game, but there is a LOT of it, I kinda just wanted to get it over with at that point and rushed to the ending. I did almost no damage, and the boss was throwing out status effects, debuffs and insta-kills left and right. The only way I was able to grind him down was to set every character to auto-attack, and focus entirely on healing, reviving, and cancelling status effects. Probably not how you're SUPPOSED to do it, but I had fun. Its like its own little mini-game.

God to hear someone else say that they love Dynasty Warriors is satisfying. Such a fantastic series that holds a core part of my childhood (DW4 is the best because it lets you actually make and customize a character)

There's some really nice mechanical design in combo effects. Example: The starter energy ball stuns, the slam attack does massively increased damage if it hits a stunned enemy, no matter what stunned them. There's an energy wave that silences enemies while giving you shield, but it also strips buffs from enemies and if it does the enemy is stunned. Combination effects like that give some extra depth to the moment to moment gameplay. Plus there's some neat build combos to mess with. Bone Shield increases the healing you do to a greater minion? Well if I throw that on a guy, then use my basic heal spell it not only boosts the healing I get, but that in run buff that says 'now this also heals 5 allies nearby' runs on % of the amount the initial heal did, so that's boosted too. Oh neat, a mass HoT spell that makes everyone immune to bleed for a duration. Remember that enchantment option that gives a damage buff while subject to a HoT? Yup, 100% uptime is quite possible on that. (and 20% is substantial.) If anything is a flaw in the design right now, it's that the lesser minions are melee or ranged... and both are DPS class, so DPS upgrades are the only ones that count for both lesser and greater minions. (There's a level cap of 20 though, so eventually you cap out on a really long run.) Some more lesser minion options would add enemy verity while also making for more choices in minion leveling.

I got a crazy run by just buffing my minions and debuff damage. The enchantment that shoots healing orbs that heal ALL minions whenever you heal a greater minion and buffing the tank greater minion when you only have one tank really just makes killing you minions invincible. Also getting the buff enchantment to all lesser minions helps out their health. I sadly died and got one-shot by one of those buffed tanks on the second level though 😢

I always loved healing and tanking in World of Warcraft, but never found a game that gives the same feeling that those roles give the player. If this is all it is cracked up to be, I'll be keeping a close eye on Never Mourn. I love the idea of mixing the roles together based on your staff, that's really neat.

"that's the red part of the bar" ... I had to look really, really hard to even realize it was red. might be due to youtube losing some graphic quality but that dark red on black is not a great design choice. they need to lighten the red part slightly to make it more discernable because if someone is even slightly colorblind to red, that is going to be completely invisible. edit: honestly, I would change out the death animation altogether. your playing a necromancer. take a page out of dnd's lich book and you don't "die" you just go back to a backup body or teleport out, or something.

I love the Warriors / Musou games. My first introduction was Dynasty Warriors for the GameBoy Advance, then followed up with Warriors Orochi for the PS2 (because why pick between Chinese and Japanese legends when you can have them both?), then the Gundam one. If Never Mourn had more enemy density per room, that would really bring the Musou vibe.

i don't know the answer for this one specifically, but in case you don't get an answer from Splat, i know hes been having all sorts of issues with the platform...delisting...monetization etc only because hes mentioned it a few times so im guessing its related to that. really stinks cus Splat's the best and has been workin hard at this every day for a long time. anyway hopefully that helps in case you dont get a better answer homie!

@@MagicalMajestic The video was filmed the night before the 1.0 release, which is usually a safe choice, 'cause why would a dev team release a huge amount of untested content mere hours before the 1.0? But this time the UI, the way the skills were obtained and seemingly 50% of the game systems were overhauled with the 1.0 release which is an interesting choice by the developers. So Splatty pulled his video given that it was all wildly different to what he had recorded. Which he revealed during his streaming of V Rising on Twitch on release day. (Which is how I know, 'cause I didn't get to see his YT video of it at all before it got nuked for being outdated/inaccurate.)

One of the 1st games on original XBOX (based on Quake 2 engine) looks like the "adventure / story mode" of this game, even the models look the same (low poly go-faster graphics), and even the play style of the "mini-levels" looks the same-ish, just with updated renderer (map edges and sun / sky) - (based on my now 26 yo memories) - wonder if the developers or the source code base is the same

I think they all hold up fine. Each that I've played add some meaningful management piece to the game, but that's basically it. The combat and core gameplay are effectively the exact same as 15 years ago with some qol improvements/deprovements.
