For my money: no, it doesn't hold up. It brought a lot of wonderful features to the table (like terraforming and outdoor decorating!) but abandoned absolutely everything that made the series truly great. I like it, but I'm planning to mod the hell out of it as soon as Nintendo announces they've stopped supporting it.

Sadly, it doesn't. They did one great upgrade and abandoned it. Too concerned with pocketcamp. They could've done so much and just didn't. I feel they let the community down big time.

I'm a year late but it's so refreshing to watch a New Horizons review and not only acknowledge that the game seems like a new direction for the series and also that the pandemic lockdown almost certainly affected the way the player base was able to interact with the game WAY more than I think the development team could have anticipated. I feel like other reviews overlook this so much, but people were home all day every day and outside of remote work which was also kind of touch and go for a while as things were figured out people were sinking ungodly amounts of time into the game. Not only that but I wouldn't doubt if the pandemic had a big effect on the update cadence and the frequency stuff hit in. I feel like instead of a big 2.0 update we would have gotten a lot of these bigger features in the smaller updates but covid suddenly changed the entire development environment in an instant. Especially for a country like Japan where their work culture revolves around actually being in the office, it must have been a big shakeup. Obviously just a guess, but even if updates were the same I don't think you'd have players who'd wrung the game content dry so quickly if life was y'know...at all normal during the release. Personally, I sunk 400 hours in the first month because it was a huge escape for me from all the stress of goings on and I know I'm not alone in that. I really wish people factored such a big circumstance into their criticisms of NH. I think the game definitely has problems but I genuinely wonder what the conversation surrounding this game would be like if it had released in a normal world environment like NL.

my guess is it probably would’ve held up for at least another year or so. But once nintendo stopped updating the game, the community started falling off of the game bit by bit. i almost wonder if covid wouldn’t have happened if the team would’ve added more updates after 2.0

i'm not gonna lie.... i'm one of those folks that rides really hard for new leaf LMAOOO. but listening to your review reassured me there is truly value in playing this game, and it's possible that this is simply the course they wish to take for player experience moving forward. it doesn't *have* to be just like new leaf, it may be the blueprint of what's to come. we're on the same page re: more expansions, pacing, etc. for sure! it was shocking to me that maxed out room expansions weren't available so soon.
@ChuyPlays

I loved New Leaf for sure! That game is still incredibly special. But, I'm not down on the direction of the series quite yet. I just see too much potential with what we got from New Horizons.

You say multiple times throughout the review that you're a long-time fan of Animal Crossing, and it shows. You appreciate what the game has to offer; what it changes, what it keeps the same, what its core gameplay goal is, and you also acknowledge the areas in which it's sorely lacking and could stand to be improved. You're also, like, one of a _tragically_ small number of people who I've seen actually _praise_ the villager dialogue in this game, because they actually really do have a lot of fantastic stuff to say if you talk to them a few times! I share your optimism for the future of this series. Even if Nintendo doesn't do too much more with New Horizons, I think this is the start of a special new era for Animal Crossing. I'm very impressed with this video and I'm gonna go check out your Haken podcast next!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it! I can't help but love Animal Crossing so I'm really happy I was able to express my views on the game as fairly as possible. I think it's a nice entry with so much potential for the future. That to me is what is incredibly exciting.

It's really interesting to watch this after the last direct and how many of the things you mentioned were addressed. I think overall New Horizons has quite a few quirks that needs to be worked out but ultimately, we will be benefiting from where it took the series for a long time. The bump in popularity and the steps forward in game play and customization will surely help support this series for years to come.

This is the probably the fairest criticism I've read so far out from the community, aside from the common complain of "It's not New Leaf enough"... Tbh New Horizon done ALOOOOOT of good things for the series and made a good foundation for the next title but some people just want to focus on what's "missing" in New Horizon.... Which is such a shame..

I enjoyed the review. You talking about the villagers specifically got me thinking about why I left animal crossing this time. It was the villagers. For the villagers, the multiple interactions needed to get to the good dialogue caused me to never get to the good dialogue. Because i didn’t know there was good dialogue! I would talk to my villagers, and they would say the same things over and over every single day. I thought that it was just bland and boring. I wouldn’t talk to them 3+ times in a day, because why would I? I could have 30 dialogue interactions for the whole town (3 for 10 villagers) and never get good dialogue with anyone. Then you guys talked about it on the haken podcast and it was my first time hearing about good dialogue after talking to villagers multiple times. I tried it a few times, but it was tedious to get through that dialogue 3 times before having a chance at something interesting. It really was just a grind to do that so I just never did. I love the interactions between villagers! I found that was pretty much the only time I enjoyed, or really even saw, the villagers’ personalities. But without feeling attached to the villagers, once I finished fishing, bug catching, and decorating my town to my liking, I didn’t have much else pulling me back into the game since I never got that personal attachment. Edit: just made it to the conclusion. Yes, to ALL your points here on pacing. And I love what you said about New Leaf is the best of the old animal crossing and new horizons is the start to the new animal crossing. So true. I’m still looking forward to the next one. New Horizons was by far my most played animal crossing game ever so they did a lot right.
@ChuyPlays
@ChuyPlays 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching through this! One of the recent updates seems to have made changes with the dialogue. I've been running around and noticing a bigger portion of my villagers saying something interesting rather than the casual hello. They might've changed the programmed dialogue to fix that a bit!

Being stuck with certain colors of items on your island was abhorrent, I frankly think it should have been called out and was one of the worst parts of the game and I’m so glad I don’t have to bother trading for them now that we have Reese and Cyrus This is a good review though, never thought of crafting that way

Oh my goodness I swear there is still so much to learn about this game. I am glad you explained how the convos actually function. Not only is there new convo even Isabelle today said something brand new, but I recently found some of those longer convos by accident. When I terraformed my island I was limited to 8 inclines and bridges, and I never knew they moved that to 8 bridges and 8 inclines, oh so cool, I used land bridges as bridges and connections instead, so I know what I will be doing as I can now get more inventive. All in all I really love your review and suggestions, like you I can't wait to see what the future brings. I have just under two months before I hit the one year mark, more due to unavailability of the switch lite than my stalling, and the thing I am most annoyed at it the fact that Redd really didn't visit much over the winter...

There is something I learned long ago. Did you know that when you customize a tool, you will be able to reset the durability? This is only possible with the normal tools. Before using a tool for a task, I always make sure I customize it so that it doesn't break while I'm working.

Thank you Chuy for reminding me why I love this game so much! I have played all the game of the franchise, and even if Gamecube AC has a special place in my heart (yeah.. nostalgia…) ACNH is objectively the best game in my opinion, because what keeps me coming back is decorating my town/island, which was very limited in the previous game. Is ACNH perfect? No. Does this game has all the best features seen in the franchise? No. But even with if some awesome features from previous games are missing (minigames, Brewster, flea market, the pelican trio, or literally anything from HHD) there is some new features that are amazing (crafting, outside decoration, starting on an almost deserted island, terraforming). I hope that, with the time, some updates will fill the gap from the previous games, but I am also thinking that we might get an « All Star » game as the next one (even if it is in 10 years).

I enjoyed your review, and agree with a lot of it. 🙂 There are things I miss from previous games, but in terms of customization and how much control the player has over decorating their island, I would say ACNH is my favorite in the series. Though I am hoping for some things to be added through future updates. Apart from Brewster and Gyroids, I would also like to see more furniture for the Nook's Cranny catalogue, like you said. There are some objects from ACNL that are still missing in NH. It also had a lot of distinct house exterior options that haven't returned in NH, so of course I'd love to see those return in some way. I won't get my hopes up for anything bigger than those things, lol, but I admit I'll be disappointed if some of those aren't added. I just reset my island after not playing for a year (a pattern which has been standard for me with all AC games), so there's a bunch of old updates that will be somewhat new for me. Maybe that's why the burnout hasn't hit me as much as some other people. The Dream Suite was one of my favorite features from NL, so I'm very glad it was added to NH too. I'm the type of player who just doesn't have the patience or attention span to make a very elaborate, detailed island, so being able to visit dream towns lets me appreciate the creations of people more dedicated than me, lol. Anyway, whatever the future of Animal Crossing holds, I'm looking forward to finding out.

I finally got to watching the whole review, and I think I agree with everything you said! Seeing a more positive outlook on various features that have gotten negative criticism and the series in general was really nice. There are still plenty of qualms that we'll see if Nintendo addresses or not, but with the incoming November update and promises for future updates past that has really gotten me back into New Horizons again! Even if I'd say New Leaf is the better game overall, I've played New Horizons much longer than any previous entry, and it's kept me engaged for much longer in that regard. I can't wait to see your reactions to the new updates to this game when they're out, and of course future Animal Crossing games down the line!

This was my first AC game. Somebody searching watching the way I played told me I probably wouldn't enjoy the previous entries because of how different this was to them. I don't know how true that is, but since I don't currently own any of the systems they're on (and I don't emulate nearly as much as I used to) I'll probably never find out :P If this really is a reboot indicative of a new direction for the series though, then I'm looking forward to it.

I got new horizons at launch. I played it for months, and I just couldn’t anymore, no updates, breaking tools, too many annoyances to justify the price it should’ve released at $60 not $80 (Canadian prices) it was too much for a unfinished game. I went back to new leaf quickly and I just don’t bother playing new horizons anymore and the DLC wasn’t very good either new leaf was complete at launch and had DLC later that just reengaged people into playing again. Where when New horizons came out, it was unfinished, and had underwhelming updates through the year, and lack lustre DLC that just repackaged Happy Home Designer with an HD update and new characters. So in my opinion, New Leaf is still a way better game then New Horizons

I find Kicks with his limited items frustrating. We already have a huge selection of shoes and socks due to the Able Sisters each day, also each colour available - while Kicks only sells what you can see in his selection, which is only one colour for each item ... Same with Leaf. I would like Kicks and Leaf to have a permanent store in the game, you can visit daily to see their limited items rather than waiting for once per week or once per two weeks or something ... imagine Able Sisters having a second floor for Kicks or Nook's Cranny to get a second floor for Leaf. It's cool that we got Bruister and his cafe now, but unfortunately it's not its own building but an extension to the museum. I rather have the cafe be its own building to place and decorate around.

ACNH just doesnt feel like Animal Crossing to me anymore. Everything from setting, story to gameplay are different (or feel different to me). Its not that I hate the game or anything...but its just not the same anymore. Maybe also because its going into a direction of Animal Crossing I never liked...I was never the person to really decorate my town. And ACNH feels like it's all that. Go and decorate.

Regarding the Nook Mile challenges.. here's a simple fix which was Nintendo's idea: Reward us a badges (LIKE IN ACNL) when we complete the Nook Mile challenges. WE WANT TO FLEX. 😂 That alone is incentive enough to actually want to complete these challenges. It's overwhelmingly disappointing that the only reward for completing these is points.

Amibbos and their cards 💳 💳 have gone and I've been told that the only way to get them is from online from Amazon which I don't and wouldn't never ever trust to do because they could already be used Brewers already in the museum when you get Kapp'n the 1st thing that happens is Blathers gives you his picture 📸 📷 🖼 🤳 and asks you to find him to tell him to come to the island 🏝 and after you do that and you report back to Blathers he closes the museum for a day while the coffee ☕ stop is installed in it

I start playing animal crossing new horizons again and loved it very much putting heaps of hours in to it and after the updates and hundreds of hours playing I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the game heck I like it a lot, but it’s not an animal crossing game it just doesn’t have the same charm as in others, I’m upset when I walk around my island and it’s empty I placed all this furniture but villagers aren’t interactive enough and there no other shops included sure I can go to havs island but it not the point my own island is empty and bland. I hoped animal crossings new horizons would have done everything it did before and better, they only really needed to fix a couple of things but they rushed it and pushed it out at the end They could have made villages more interesting and more shop layouts making my bland path exciting with shops and interactive villages What I’m trying to say is it’s an amazing game it’s just not an animal crossing game, I really hope they fix all the problems and add more things in the new game

DLC is not a new thing for Nintendo. There's heaps of 3DS games littered with DLC, including ones published by Nintendo themselves. It might be a new thing for their primary franchises, but they got plenty of experience with the 3DS and I bet the Wii U as well. For instance, I know for a fact that Xenoblade Chronicles X has DLC.

i talked to my villagers later in the day - i talked to them all day, in fact, but it still was very repetitive. i heard all of those dialogues, but it still got really boring.

I love ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘 label coming I did have way too many bugs 🐛 and fish 🐟 waited ✋ for Flick and CJ to turn up so I could 1 get their model for a new creature and to sell them the creatures I don't need because they pay more than the shop does

Tbh this game feel like a animal crossing spin-off. The entire “little town feel” is completely gone, this is basically ‘happy island designer’. I just wish they would realize we play this game for the “life sim” style of it, not necessarily the decoration aspect. I have no connection to my villagers and they essentially live in the dollhouse I built for their lifeless husks.

Finally someone that is not all like "The villagers in this game are bland! NH sucks! The GameCube villagers who verbally abuse you have more personality!. Like, I get how always getting the same greeting can lead to players thinking that the villagers have no personality and that the dialogue is repetitive, but disregarding the whole dialogue the game has because of it it's not good. And by the way, I played the GameCube game, which "supposedly" has more dialogue variety... and a single villager gave me the exact same "I hate the town tune!" conversation like four or five times.

That character really wanted you to change the town tune, he probably thought you weren’t getting the hint 😂

If you are wasting nook miles on tickets you are probably doing it wrong. its fun to do that when you first start the game but if you truly love animal crossing, you will caugh up some money for amiibo card packs and collect your fav villagers through those and always have them with you no matter if a new game is released or if you want to go back to the old games that accept amiibos. You only get a limited amount of nook miles before you have to truly grind hardcore for them by playing the same boring ass game every day doing the same shit every day and if youre dropping 2000 nook miles on each ticket, you will never recover...unless you grind daily but there are other games to grind on that arent an empty shell of a game with no content

My point 👉 is with that is because I had to start again I restarted over 4 times ⏲ ⏲ because I wasn't getting rusted parts which I needed for something that I want to build now the only way that I can get the rusted parts is to rip off Gullivar so that's what I'm doing now since I've started so many times ⏲ ⏲ I've suddenly learned new things like growing produce cooking not just catching fish and swimming for things out of the sea I'm now cooking and eating them been given 5-6 power each time I eat a meal and I'm not just growing fruit and produce I'm cooking and eating that too with the same power been given I've learnt 2 new ladders that fix to cliffs so I don't need any stairs or inclines also I've found vines thanks for the introduction of Kapp'n who I never had before that was quite new and a surprise that's how I'm getting produce to grow as well
