Another thing with handling is to limit skin contact with them as we have a very high body temperature and it’s very uncomfortable for them.

I just finished feeding my baby five dubias but I noticed he'd lunge at the riches but sometimes miss and grab the paper towel substrate so I'm gonna go get the butcher paper you mentioned. Also I have a little bit of sphagnum moss clump in the corner but I noticed he'd grab a little as well when he grabbed them when they hid in there. I mainly use that as a way to give him some place to hide and also to maintain some humidity, should I take that out cuz he might swallow little bits of it. I like the idea of him hunting so he can get excercise but don't want him eating anything like paper or bits of moss. Should I just put them in a small bowl?

You can create a hide for him. Take a small Tupperware bowl cut a circle in the top making sure the edges of where you cut are smooth and fill it with your normal substrate and moss. Then you can sit that in the corner where you have the moss now. Then put your Kraft/butcher paper in as the main “substrate” and that will allow for him to have both yet it will keep the dubia out of the loose substrate. You can put them in a bowl if you’d like, but you definitely have other options if you like for him to be able to hunt.

I'm starting to have trouble maintaining the humidity level in my enclosure. I'm using a six quart plastic tub. I have paper towels, a small fake plant a couple of hides and some sphagnum moss. Should I put a different kind of substrate or just add more moss to retain humidity?

You could definitely add a bit of moss in there first 😊 and give it a mist a bit more often than you do currently just until you see it start to maintain. If that doesn’t do the trick, then you can look at different options of substrate. That truly depends on where you are located and what your humidity is like in your home environment as to how much it may take to maintain. If you need to, grab up a small humidifier and keep it in the area of where you are keeping your gecko(s). Hope that helps!

@@FlawlessCrestedGeckos for sure. I'm out in California, usually the temp and humidity is ok but during the winter it can get dry. I'll start with the moss then look into a humidifier. I'm eventually gonna put him in a bioactive that maintains humidity better

I recently took my three month old to the vet and she said he was doing great, but that I shouldn't feed him insects this early, just CGD. Ive seen tons of videos where breeders fees them crickets, dubias n such at an early age. Should I find a different vet or is she right?

We start offering very small insects at around 5 grams…it’s important to get them started on them at an early age to create that prey drive and consistent nutrients. Many times vets are not as concentrated in the area of reptiles and do the very best they can with the amount of experience they have with certain species of reptiles. Most geckos don’t really have issues as long as they have correct husbandry and nutrients. We rarely ever take our geckos to our vet as there isn’t any real reason to unless they are legitimately sick. Infections, severe injury or something of that nature. Just make sure your insects are of the appropriate size for your crestie. Rule of thumb is no bigger than the width of their heads. Hope that helps!

@@FlawlessCrestedGeckos yeah that's what I thought. I definitely make sure they're tiny. And I was actually happy to see him have that hunting instinct. He goes right after them or leaves them till he's hungry then eats them. And he eats quite a few. I've put in 3 or 4 and he eats them all.

How important is routine for your crested geckos specifically? Like I feed him and handle him regularly but what about cleaning his enclosure. I clean it during the day when he's asleep so I inevitably wake him up, is that ok or should I do it t night when he's awake? Does it matter?
@FlawlessCrestedGeckos
@FlawlessCrestedGeckos 4 ай бұрын
We feel that routine is important. We suggest that you spot clean weekly and then once per month you completely change out the enclosure. We change out enclosures when we feed them which is during day as well. We think you are doing just fine.
