Vanessa thank you so much for your patience. Champ does swim a lot. When he was 9 weeks old and we brought him up north for the first time he jumped right into the Magnettawan river and almost floated away. They are cold weather dogs. He can relax on a snow bank while chewing a piece of ice he suffers a bit in summer so every 45 minutes or so he runs down to the river and soaks. The herding / hunting instinct is strong. He even rounds up minnows to catch. We only had trouble with one groomer. I asked he not be shaved but she shaved off his entire hind end. We do brush him regularly. No mats, just a few burrs on top. The underside is difficult especially after a long hot summer in the forest. Loud bark eh? He is gentle though if he bit you it would probably be an accident. I smiled when you told us on pick up he wouldn’t accept treats. Also when it was time to go he lay down and gave the ‘who are you?” Look. Trying to make me feel bad. He is back to Champ right away, his terrier came out and he spent 2 hours digging in the mud trying to get a chipmunk. Thank you again. I will be using your de-shed and nasty critter.

I have never met a Finnish lapphund who liked grooming of any kind (at home or a groomer's), but they don't actually usually mind getting wet splashing through streams and puddles, which could explain why his belly is so matted. And that piercing bark is great for it's intended purpose, aka hunting activities, it's just really, really not indoors appropriate 😅 Source: I'm Finnish with some experience with the breed
@battles146Ай бұрын
appears his parents will need some guidance and training on how to provide more care at home re frequent brushing to combat the mattings if he continues in his outside adventures, running thru the forest/water etc, or expect more shavings when professionally groomed - not every groomer is as patient and good as Vanessa - he looked beautiful when she was done

If anyone is interested: Finland has 5 original breeds - Lapponian herder, finnish spitz, Karelian bear dog, finnish lapphund and finnish hound! They are all very pretty :) The finnish spitz is the oldest breed, some say 3000 years old but there are discovered cave paintings from the stone age that have a dog that looks like the finnish spitz! Hello Vanessa! Just a pedantic note on the history of the lapphund...Sami is the name of the people who are native to Lapland. They used lapphunds first for hunting of bears and other wild animals, and then when they switched to taking care of reindeer, they used their dogs for herding reindeer. There are three types of lapphund nowadays. The Finnish lapphund, the Swedish lapphund and the Lapponian herder. The Swedish lapphund is considered to be an "original breed" and is quite old. They look very similar to the Finnish lapphund, but they're all black, usually have a bigger work drive, and are slightly bigger. The Lapponian herder is the biggest of the three breeds, and they have shorter hair.

[wiktionary] Samoyed (anthropology) A member of the Samoyedic peoples of the Siberian Urals, who speak Samoyedic languages. A hardy breed of dog from Siberia. Synonyms: Sammie, Sammy👈, Smiley (endearing nicknames) From Russian самое́д (samojéd), probably from Sami *saam-edne (“land of the people”); compare Finnish Suomi (“Finn”) From Proto-Finnic *soomi, probably from earlier *sämä and related to Proto-Samic *sāmē Further etymology uncertain. What a beautiful good boy he was! Really an interesting breed we rarely see in “real life”. I’m finding you guys up in Canada have a large amount of rarer dog and cat breeds. It’s so cool seeing them. I have Shetland Sheepdogs and I’m still waiting for you to groom one☺️

Champ is a very beautiful doggie, the colors of his coat are so lovely. I enjoyed watching you groom him, your decision-making process is always interesting and educational. Thank you for everything you did for Champ!

If I have a Finnish Lapphund, its main duty is to keep me warm 😄

Champ is living his best life, but he's also carrying the outdoors in his fur.

What a gorgeous dog! Would love to own one like Champ! Love seeing the various breeds on your channel, and the history you give behind each one. So far, Champ is my favorite! ❤️❤️❤️

This!! This is what Tok was! He was my babysitter when we lived in Anchorage, and we brought him with us to Arizona. Such a smart boy, very agile, ready to pull a sled or climb a ladder. My dad's sole male companion when we were a family of 4 girls. I always forget what they're called but when they come up, childhood memories of Tok come flooding back.

They are wonderful family dogs. I broke my finger last weekend. When I got home from the hospital he seemed concerned somehow. I was in discomfort so I went to bed. Champ who never sleeps on the bed jumped up and dropped his favorite toy on my chest. He snuggled beside me like a parent might to a child. When he thought I was asleep he quietly got down and lay across the doorway on guard duty. They know. Their senses are supernatural.

Cutest face & such a patient boy - loved the way he stoically looked down very still as you brushed & detangled his fur - sweet dog.
