I always loved how everyone helps both themselves and each other. Annalise and Erica escape alone, but Julian and Dominic play major roles in helping them. I just love it. And Preminger is the best villain ever, he may be a peasant son but he's a true queen

Yeah, it’s such a good detail because they could have really just had Dominick beat up a guard or something. But they carefully considered having everyone save themselves and I really appreciate that!

To me is crazy that Preminger started to think on his plan when Anelise was at most a young teenager. Which have a very dark implication especially to a Barbie movie. I believe that is why the relationship between Serafina and Midas is so weird, it's reflected Anelese and Preminger

Fee years ago I had an insomnia and started thinking of how an hour long Barbie commercial has better plot, characters, world building and even damn economy is better than the entirety of Star Wars new trilogy. I've rewatched the cartoon the next day and was even angrier at Disney SW, because the cartoon turned out to be even better than I remembered it.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Even when the term Stockholm Syndrome was coined, it was at best pop psychology and based off a singular case of a woman sympathizing and even joining her kidnapper. Basically an experiment that can't easily be replicated due to uncontrollable variables, which science (including psychology, the shakiest of the sciences) cannot and should not be based upon. Basically, all these people going "Does X character have Stockholm Syndrome?" should be treated the same as guessing someone's personality based on their horoscope.

one small thing i really like about the songs is julian's voice. aside from the fact that it's alessandro juliani (you can never get tired of hearing that man talk or sing), you'd usually expect the male lead to be a soft tenor and the villain to be a booming baritone (like in the hunchback of notre dame), but in this case it's almost the opposite. julian sings in the lower range, though his voice is still mostly soft, and preminger sings pretty high notes, while his voice is still loud. this was probably done to make julian sound different from king dominic, since prince antonio from the island princess (also played by juliani) does sing in the tenor range.

This is SO TRUE and I want to do this video series where we talk about male leads in different things (in barbie movies) and talk about why they're so well-written / different than other love interests. I want to do a "What's In A Love Interest?" Type series but I haven't settled on how exactly to format it yet haha. Barbie honestly has some of the most interesting leading men in "kids" animation imo.

Thank you for making this amazing video! This movie shaped me so much as a person! I have a cat named Anneliese and I’m hoping to get a blue butterfly tattoo in the future. The early Barbie movies had a great way of saying that even if you don’t work out with a partner it doesn’t mean that either of you are bad people. And the queerness and openness of being different really helped me. One thing you might not have noticed is that when madam Carp mistakes Anneliese for Erika she is coming out of a tavern presumably a bit drunk. You can even see her seem a bit unsteady and having bigger body language. The movie is so smart and fun. It definitely has flaws like the antisemitism in villain character designs (more prominent in the other movies too) but as long as we know it’s flaws and do not hold it on a pedestal of perfection it is such an amazing time. I wish other Barbie movies did things as well as this one.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch

Awwwwww I’m so glad to hear all this. I do want to talk about The Cat’s Meow as a sort of queer allegory in the future! AND YEAH I NEVER NOTICED MADAME CARPE WAS DRUNK THATS CRAZY!!!! Yeah there’s definitely some things about the older Barbie movies in terms of the character design. I think what you mentioned may also have something to do with the dolls. Any character who doesn’t have a doll, for better or for worse, has a more “original” design. Sometimes that plays into stereotypes. But as I considered your comment more I wonder if the character designers were like “oh we have the freedom to give these characters a different face” and didn’t clock all those characters are the villains (except for the Ambassador I guess). Which ends up being a little problematic. The characters who don’t have dolls have more variety in terms of their facial features and those characters are also usually the villains. Like there was a Preminger prototype but he looked like a regular Ken doll and was never released. In comparison to Disney which has say, does have that same problem with how they design their villains at times but in terms of their actual toys: Ursula dolls just look exactly like Ursula instead of being a mold. I wonder if Barbie had the same power as Disney does behind it if we would see villain dolls, but also the heroines with different facial features. The reason why it’s so noticeable with Barbie is because you have the characters who are clearly dolls and the characters they went “We can go nuts!!!” And didn’t clock how that reinforces things like “the heroes are conventionally attractive but the villains are always ugly” etc. I have a Quasimodo doll that’s officially Disney that looks exactly like him but I bet if Barbie remade Hunchback he’d be Ken with some sort of costume add on LOL
@finland4ever55
@finland4ever55 9 ай бұрын
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Also not all villains in Barbie movies were ugly. We had: Raquelle Harper, Todd, Dawn Ping-Davies, and Regen Jamison in Barbie Diaries, Lydia in Diamond Castle, Laverna in the Fairytopia movies, Ariana in Island Princess, Philippe in Three Musketeers, and Henna in Mariposa.
@finland4ever55
@finland4ever55 9 ай бұрын
Wait, I don;t recall that. I doubt Erika was drunk, because this is a Barbie movie and they wouldn't let their perfect heroine get wasted. She was probably singing or trying to get money. Liana and Alexa in Diamond Castle sang for food and money in a tavern, so do with that what you will

@spoonoftheuniverse7233

@@finland4ever55 The villain madam Carp was drunk. It’s a very small detail but it gives a reason why she thought Anneliese was Erika. When Madam Carp walks over to Anneliese she comes out of a noisy building with a hanging sign in the background that looks like a beer tankard and a bunch of barrels outside. In the scene Madam Carp is also has a lot larger body language and her speech is just a bit slurred. So very tiny details for the adults in the audience to see. This is an antagonist so there’s a lot more leeway in what they can do.

Now I know that this is more a case of storytelling/movie wanting to wrap things up nicely, but I like to think of the in world aspect of it..... It's very interesting that they have their weddings at the same time. Erica's makes sense, given how she went off to chase her dreams to see the world and sing........ but what about Annalise? Why didn't she marry Julian sooner. Simple, the kingdom needed help. She was busy with reopening the mines and gathering the crystals. Just being the leader she was always meant to be. Only when the kingdom was back on its feet was she ready to follow her dream of marrying for love. Only after she did her duty as a royal did she allow herself her happiness. She will remain forever royal, after all...... but now she is able to do things to the best of HER ability, and not of expectations of what others think she should be.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch You know I never thought of it at them being polyam, even being polyam myself. But I do like that. I could see Julian and Dominick/Dominique (idk what spelling is right anymore) but Julian and Erica are definitely strictly best friends, and the girls both seem too straight to be together even in a queer platonic relationship, but they're definitely in something not monogamous, if only just for the aspect that they love each other in a plantonic way

Amazing video, I love it! Anneliese was always my favourite because of her love for science and her cleverness which she really shows throughout the movie. Her relationship with Julian is so sweet, especially their scene in the mine. I just hated that they don't have a duet together! And because I can't resist discussions about my favourite things: On Midas: This could be a difference in translation because I've only ever seen the movie in German (or my child brain remembering things differently because I haven't seen the movie in so long) but I didn't get the impression that Midas was into Serafina. I thought he hated her and wanted to hurt her, physically, but she always evaded and taunted him. (I remember him saying a line, something like "Pray that you have nine lives, Serafina, because you will need every single one of them!") Probably as a reflection of Preminger's opinion on/jealousy of royalty. And a sort-of defense of the queen: From her perspective, Preminger's explanation of Julian being the culprit doesn't make any less sense than what we know to be the truth. Preminger's been her trusted advisor for years, him being evil and plotting must seem as ridiculous as an idea as Julian, her daughter's tutor for years, doing so. The evidence also seems to be on Preminger's side since Erika IS an imposter that Preminger exposed. And Dominick spent the last few days falling in love with Erika so he's not exactly objective. Though she should definitely have doubted his version of events once he brings up his make-me-king idea and maybe sent someone to the mines to verify. I'm also not sure if the queen knows that Anneliese is in love with Julian specifically, she knows that Anneliese doesn't want to marry the king but does she even know Julian is there when Anneliese looks out from the balcony? There's a detail I love about Erika's impersonation working on the queen in that Julian takes away the queen's glasses before she sees Erika-as-Anneliese for the first time to make it more believable that she wouldn't recognize her own daughter instantly (implying that she probably would if she had them). In general, I've always had a bit more of a positive interpretation of the queen. She was definitely in the wrong and rightfully apologizes but I was always impressed by her not asking anything of Anneliese that she isn't willing to do herself for the same reason. She knows she's hurting Anneliese with the arranged marriage, only doing so for her people, but she fully commits to marrying Preminger to save her people the same way despite clearly hating every second of it.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch 3 ай бұрын
Ahhh thank you so much for the detailed comment! Let me try to be organized: Re: Julian and Anneliese duet, that is a very good point. I don't know WHEN they could have had one but it would have been interesting for them to have an "If You Love Me For Me" reprise in the cave. Or maybe even a "Written In Your Heart" reprise before the one we get in the finale. Like Anneliese remembers Erika's song and uses that to convey what Julian means to her. Re: Midas, I got some weird vibes from him LOL. You are probably right... they just made him so... weird LOL Queen defense: Yeah that's valid. She's probably known Preminger longer than Julian and it's possible that Anneliese has kept her fondness for Julian a secret because she didn't want anyone to know that they are closer than just tutor-princess. THE GLASSES REMOVAL: That part is so funny to me because the Queen really only has one pair of glasses. Times are very hard here LOL. But yeah I think you're right about the Queen, like, the only reason she isn't getting married is probably because Dominick would not want an old wife. Anneliese is their best chance, until Preminger is their second best chance haha. Sorry I took so long to reply, I probably thought "oh this needs brainpower... I'll come back later!' and then I forgot 😂 🤣😂 🤣

I'm excited for essays on The Nutcracker, The Barbie Diaries (it's important for having the first black and Asian characters in the CGI Barbie movies (Courtney Tsubasa, Tia Ashbei, Dawn Ping-Davies) and the debut of RAQUELLE HARPER THE ICONIC MEAN GIRL, and how it's got Barbie in a punk ban Barbie and the Rockers (the time travel, her having black and Korean bandmates, how everyone, even SOVIET RUSSIA loves her, the fact that most of the songs are covers being treated as Barbie originals which is kinda dodgy...), Mariposa (SPAIN!!!), Diamond Castle (yes i know it's got a rep for the "Liana and Alexa are a couple" but please talk about more than that, talk about the worldbuilding, the Greek influence, and how it's actually kinda terrifying I mean Lydia turning people to statues, hypnotizing everyone, kidnapping Alexa and making her jump into acid (HER CAVERN IS SURRUNDED BY ACID WTF?), and 12 Dancing Princesses

44:50 EXACTLYYYYY. Also, with HOW MANY TIMES this overcorrection actually happens in plots, it actually teaches an equally bad lesson: "men must be undermined in order for women to be powerful". Like NOOO! Women do NOT have to bring men down to be empowered!! Women are enough on their own without emasculating or undermining men!! I am enough without having to be in control, in charge, independent, unaffected - like no. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, that's WHY people help each other. My husband makes up for things I lack, just as I make up for things he lacks - and beyond romance, this is ANY relationship! We help each other, and we are not weak because we need others. That's just how humans function. There's nothing wrong with needing help, man OR woman. It is, in my opinion, a dangerous lesson to teach, that men must be taken down before women can excel. "Women can't do anything without a man to help them" and "women can't do anything unless men are undermined" have the exact same levels of misogyny. We're all Pokémon with our own individual stat distributions and purposes. Let's all remember: empowerment achieved by stepping on others is not empowerment. It's oppression.

I wished you had gone into a bit more detail on Annelise's part of "I'm a Girl like you" cause the framing of the song itself doesnt give it the proper credit for what the lyrics are actually saying: If I want some eggs I ring the bell And the maid comes running in And she serves them on a silver tray And she brings a cookie tin And while I eat, she rubs my feet And strolling minstrels play But I'd rather be in my library Reading science books all day There is this 5x "And" structure and it functions very well to showcase what exactly happens once Annelise "dares" to want something for breakfast. She doesnt get to go and get herself something to eat, she MUST get the maid involved and then it starts. The maid immediately comes running in, Annelise tells her what she wants and, yes, gets it, but she also knows its always combined with an unnessecary amout of fanfare. And that's not where it stops. Once she asked for something, she'll get _more,_ even if she didnt ask for it and HAS to eat it too. (So she's not really choosing her breakfast as her first line would have you believe) AND the maid is staying with her, rubbing her feet, whether she likes it or not because that's customary. _AND_ several strolling minstrels also are also brought in to entertain the princess with music while she eats her breakfast. (Strolling minstrels who in this context I can only imagine having settled in the court as they did sometimes. Still weird calling them that, though, when you had other options. Cause _no way_ could Annelise have possibly overhear minstrels from all the way in the town. They had to be with her.) Later in the movie we also see that Annelise always has her breakfast in bed and that the maid will come in with the breakfast already prepared. Nothing implied that Erika as Annelise overslept, that's just normal. Annelise awakes right in time for breakfast and any specific food wishes she talked about in "I'm a girl like you" are only things she can add after it's already served. No one is asking her what she wants to eat, she merely has the option of voicing extra wishes which will be served to her in a manner that comes with such unnecessary extra bs that it most of the time probably doesnt feel worth it for her bc she literally woke up like 2 minutes ago, so she doesnt (remember, asking for eggs also leads to the cookie tin being brought in ect ect). The moment she wakes up, Annelise has to be in princess-mode. She barely gets time to herself before the day starts. Most things are decided for her and the few choices she can make must be made cautiously because they will come with more things she has to deal with depending on how much her choices interrupt or demand more of this machine-like routine within the royal court. By all means, yes, getting a foot massage in bed while eating breakfast sounds amazing, but Annelise is not deciding that someone is always touching her (feet) every day while she eats. Or that the she has to interact with the minstrels too if she doesnt want to come across as impolite, ungrateful or snobby. And dont forget, this is all happening while she's eating breakfast in bed. She has to get through all that bullshit first *to be allowed to stand up in the morning.* Probably another reason why she's mostly just letting the daily routine happening to her without trying to really fight back. It wont accidentally lead to problems later on because she "dared" to not think of EVERY implication her choices could cause _and_ this way she also knows how long it'll take for her to be done with breakfast (including the maid massaging her and the entertainers to be gone) so she can FINALLY stand up. When Annelise sings "But I'd rather be in my library reading science books all day", what she means is "yes, my breakfasts are amazing, but sometimes I wished I could SKIP eating the breakfast because it's the start of my daily routine and I wished skipping it would magically make it possible to just not enter said routine and just read my science books in the library for a day and in peace for once". Erika is in a position where she says she could only dream of getting such wonderful breakfast each day. Annelise is in a position where she's saying she would *sacrifice* getting it to be able to get a break.

You’re totally right - don’t worry, when I individually break down all the songs I will be mentioning things like that! That’s a really compelling detail, that for Anneliese to do something as trivial as eating breakfast there’s an entire theatrical production. A very good catch!!

I love Princess and the Pauper and whoever the heck says and she says that she's just like the poor girl can you guys just shut up this is my childhood and I don't want you to be ruining my childhood Plus in many ways the Princess and the Pauper are the same because they both don't have autonomy the princess has to marry someone that she doesn't love to help the economy of her kingdom the Pauper has to work as an indentured slave to pay off her parents debt both of these girls do not have autonomy when it comes to their lives Annelise could say that she doesn't want to marry the king but as far as Annalisa knows this is the only way she could help her kingdom movies like The Princess and the Pauper and Barbie Princess Charm School really touch on class and privilege like I feel there should be a video documenting how Barbie Princess Charm School talks about how rich people what kind of just treat poor people like nothing and destroy their homes to build some random blase thing I I might be playing it down oops

i must confess, i can't get over how ugly the 3d models are 🤐🤐but i don't doubt the movie is good story and music wise. i'm just a very visual person, and that's the reason i can't go back to some childhood content (some have aged very well, others not so much)

I'd recommend listening to the album first, since then you'll be able to get connected to the music and imagine the visuals yourself in your head XD The songs are most of the story anyway so I feel like that's still a valid way to experience the story!!
