So I just want to say the one continuity error I could never forgive was that episode Lynette caused a rift in their marriage by refusing to wear an orange shirt since orange looks bad on her. ONLY FOR SEASONS LATER TO CHOOSE TO WEAR THE UGLIEST DAYGLO ORANGE TOP.

The fact they realise he didn't really have a gun and go straight to "oh we better bury his body in the woods and cover it up" rather than "well we can get the gun from the safe and put it in his coat as he claimed it was" ruins the whole series. The fact she never mentioned that he had assaulted her a child is imaterial: it happened in Mexico, and she had told her friends, mother, the nun and her THERAPIST, plus he had FAKED HIS OWN DEATH ALREADY. Carlos hit him on the head ONCE so he used reasonable force. By no stretch of the imagination would a rich man with good community ties in the USA go to prison for knocking out an illegal immigrant who broke into his home and threatened to rape his wife.

I hear you and your point would make a lot of sense if he was white and didn't already have a record for assault, which I believe they mentioned while making the decision to hide the body.

The amount that the show validates the idea that Lynette is “emasculating” Tom really frustrates me. Sometimes she absolutely is too controlling but that’s not an issue because she’s a woman and he’s a man and he needs his man roles, it’s because she’s invalidating her partner. And sometimes she is objectively in the right to do so, Tom is insanely impulsive and they have 3-4 children to raise depending on the season. And with his utter inability to do any childcare they can’t rely on two incomes. Sometimes the show is very fair on it but it feels like Lynette is always left with the short end of the stick despite suffering tragedy after tragedy, and generally absorbing the brunt of the fallout of Toms baggage while Tom can’t handle a week of being a house husband. It’s excellent writing but I do wish the show pointed out sometimes how ridiculous it is for him to complain about her emasculating him (as opposed to the very legitimate times when she’s too controlling like with the meds)

Ok, umm… I’ve never seen the show, so maybe it’s less awful in the context of the show, and I understand it’s a situation of ‘writers probably came up with ~storyline~ after ~other storyline~ had already existed. That being said, the fact that Gabby was assaulted by a person in power (her stepfather) as a teen/minor makes her affair with John (a teen/minor who was employed by her) that much more horrifying to me. Don’t get me wrong, it was horrifying when he was a minor and employed by her; but adding the context of her past and what she went through, it’s like “Ma’am. How are you that much better than your stepfather? How are you so traumatized by your past but also repeating the cycle?” I really think the writers didn’t think this one all the way through

I feel like seasons seven and eight structure didn’t work without the “new, mysterious neighbor” arc. Paul Young and Felicia’s ongoing conflict + Gaby’s stepfather in the subsequent season just wasn’t strong enough as a central “mystery”. Sure, it’s unrealistic that these random people move onto the street (Betty, Gloria, Patrick, Arthur, Dave, Bolens, Mayfairs) and only last for a year or so before their dirty laundry is unearthed…but that’s part of the charm of the show having these new neighbors show up every season w/ the ladies converging w/ their mess

all fair! I think for me the seasons 4-6 mysteries have so many weaknesses that I prefer the character-centered approach to s7-8! But the Paul mystery def isn't as intriguing as like, the s1 mystery.
