Reminds me of my favourite book series where a comedian goes to his first session with his psychologist. The psychologist is dressed like Pippi Longstocking, uses her pigtails like sockpuppets and is generally really weird and unhinged. At the end of the session she asks if he feels better and he say "Well, I feel really normal now." She answers "Great, that's the goal of my therapy approach." But ofc he actually hates feeling normal more than anything. That's exactly what I feel when I read things like these. I'm not a comedian, but I, too, hate feeling too normal.

Maybe it’s just like slang in my friend group (we come from Twitter fandom) but I think everyone is using brainrot in a completely different way than we ever did and continue to use it to mean. I don’t have TikTok but it seems to mean closer to chronically online ie having xyz brainrot. Which I guess works with how fandomly you might say “I have x ship brainrot”. But we as a group of 5 ish people use it to mean “discussing an idea that we’ve had stuck on our mind” closer to the idea of brainworms. We would be more likely to say “brainrot this au with me” “guys are you awake I need to brainrot”. I’m trying to work out it out usage evolved from soemthing more similar to the classic tumblr idea which I’ve thought of as being like brainworms. Or if it evolved independently because were whump and body horror fanfic writers who have been discussing more literal brainrot and lobotomising our faves (I’ve written fic about birds eating our blorbos brain) so maybe it jsut sprung up from that in our own little group. TLDR me and my friend group use brainrot mostly as a verb

A true banger as always! It would be cool to hear you do a breakdown of the start of real person fandoms in the 60s and 70s! Eg. the band Led Zeppelin has a super interesting history in this regard (the fandom still goes relatively strong btw)! This resulted in several full lengh novels and a 42 volume manga in the 70s which are basically band fanfiction. There's even fanfiction for the manga and the verse the novels spawned, to the degree that people were reading spicy stories about the pseudonymes 'Tris & Alex' without knowing who it originally refers to. I'm sure some other real person and music fandoms have interesting history as well!
