Chongqing: China's most SURREAL city - is it "CCP" propaganda?!

#chongqing is like something out of the movie #bladerunner - a #cyberpunk city that's both retro and futuristic at the same time.
Recently, a travel video of Chongqing taken by an American and uploaded to TikTok went viral. The city looked too unreal, so they called it fake. CCP propaganda. Computer generated!
So I decided to fly there myself to take a look, and I'm bringing you with me!

I, sister, Mum & Dad plus some extended family were "holed up" in Chongqing during WW2. My dad worked for the Bank of China of back then (not the same as its known today in the West) which was the bank closely associated with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek who was notionally fighting the Japanese but actually was fighting against Mao but that's a huge separate other story. Chongqing being in the deep west in China made it a suitable refuge for Chiang to be hard to get at by the Japanese. The spot where he was actually located was obscure; I know because when there was a Japanese bombing raid on Chongqing we'd retreat to a cave in the mountain side where we stayed. I snuck out to the entrance of the cave once and saw the planes buzzing the city some distance away; they never flew over where we were which was only a few km away where Chiang would've been if he was in Chongqing. /1

I did some googling and found out that the Japanese bombed Chongqing day and night for 4 years running. Good thing the Japanese failed to take Chongqing. Had China not resisted for 8 long years tying up 1 million Japanese soldiers on the Chinese mainland, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, they could have had enough manpower to follow up with invading Guam, Midway, and Hawaii. The IJN ruled the western pacific for the first 6 months after Pearl even as the amerikan were reeling from the attack. Had Hawaii been taken, it would have pushed the amerikans all the way back to the amerikan west coast. China did good in resisting the invaders and helped the Allies win WW2.

China did not just "good" in WW2, being a much poorer and overall agricultural country at that time facing the industrialized imperial Japan, could only destroyed Japanese tanks by bombs in soldiers' hands, lack of mortar, artillery, plane, tank and ship, sacrificed over 18 millions and injured another 17 millions of its people and soldiers. And there were 2.6 millions of Japanese troops deployed in China during the war period, only 1 million left to surrender in 1945. Google Nanjing Massacre and Japanese Unit 731, they are just two small pieces of the whole war, nothing the Japanese Army had done to the Chinese civilians and surrendered soldiers are better than what the Nazi had done to the Jews.

Its a 170 km long city. Drive 2 hours on highway in the city and is still not ending ,,,,, crazy highways bin the city , tunnels upon tunnels and bridges upon bridges. For me I can say is Hong Kong style city but at more big level. 😂😂😂😂. It is a great city to visit, work and live I work there for few years. It’s awesome !

Americans well versed in WW2 history might know it as Chungking - the centre of resistance against Imperial Japan in the now largely forgotten theatre (in the West) of China. Chungking was the name under the old romanisation system of written Chinese i.e. Wade-Giles.

I visited Chongqing with my family as a child and don’t remember much of it. Now, I will make it a point to visit it again in the near future. The dumplings and noodles look so delicious. Chongqing was very important during the war of Japanese resistance because it was so mountainous it was difficult to attack by land. The nationalist government of Chiang kai-Shek retreated to run their operations from Chongqing while Mao's communist faction were based in Yan'an. I played General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell in a TV series about that period, specifically dealing with the way the nationalists and the communists kept in touch at that time, mostly via the efforts of Zhou Enlai as go-between. We filmed in a house which had belonged to Song Meiling and where she had lived with Chiang kai-Shek. The house was in a large park and still very much as it had been when they lived there. Later when I was back in Chongqing on another project I went to visit Joseph Stilwell's house which is now a museum. It was temporarily closed for some repairs. but when I told them I had played Stilwell they were very friendly and gave me a guided tour. That was 7 years ago so it's probably re-opened by now. The series is called "周恩来在重庆" and I did find it on KZbin but I don't think there are any subtitles. I watched it and thought it was brilliant, though it's educational rather than entertaining so it might not suit a western audience.
