There are some really great plants that work well for a more formal, shaped look, Texas sage or any other Leucophyllum species are not one of them. The reason they look dead after shaving is because shaving/shaping using a hedge trimmer kills the internal structure of the plant. Plus, it reduces the beautiful flowering that these are known for and creates more work since it has to be done regularly. I learned the hard way by watching some local landscape crews (a mistake) and ended up getting rid of all of our expensive gas- and electric-powered pruning tools. A healthier alternative is to prune the branches down to about 12" every three years or so in late winter/early spring, depending on your location and weather, using hand pruners and loppers...then just let them grow out naturally, typically in a couple of months. The reward is much less work, a much healthier plant, and amazing blooms!

THIS! Especially texas sage, i have read everywhere that these types of sages do not do well to shaping or hedging.

I like them more naturalistic looking myself… but yeah these are great pruned and shaped … I appreciate them in ball form, but I love them in free form in my yard. Great plants!

“It’s not scary”… this had me laughing because if my husband came home and saw me with that tool - he would definitely be scared! 😂 In fact, any time I am in the garage digging through his tools…he is scared! 😜 Your husband makes this look easy. The purple bush is my favorite 🤗 …so pretty! Ah…look at your little fur baby in the yard. 🥰

I'm in Texas and have a purple sage type bush similar to the bush 4 minutes into the video. Is there a certain season or month recommended to do this type of more drastic trimming? I typically have to do "hedging" type work throughout the summer, but I try not to cut back beyond where there are existing leaves and greenery. But it is very overgrown and really needs to be trimmed back on the sides quite a bit. It's March 31 right now, and I did cut one back like that about 3 weeks ago. I do see little buds in a few areas, but I do also see a lot of area that looks barren at this point. I'm hoping during the Spring it will all come back. But just wasn't sure the best time to do major trimming for this bush. Thanks

Have you ever tried propagating Teas sage? My sister has a large one and I’d like to have a couple and thought since it’s sage it might grow easily from cuttings. Thanks

I have tired once in soil but they didn't take. I want to try again in water only and see if they grow that way. I have a lot of luck that way with many plants. With the sage you want to take a soft cutting (not yet woody) 4-5 inches long remove the lower leaves. I had luck doing this with mystic spires blue salvia recently and I want to try the Texas sage again. Good Luck to you🤞

Just bought some of these because I love their silvery year-round color. When I got them home I noticed mine aren’t as silvery as my neighbors. I noticed you had different types. Are some of yours greener than others? Am I dealing with Rio Bravo’s instead of Silverado’s like I thought I purchased? Thanks for any insight.

Is it best to prune them hard after flowering or in spring?
@AnaAndreaXoxo8 ай бұрын
We hard pruned them in the fall / winter, when time allowed us. Anytime after blooms are spent we'd do a 1/3 prune to shape them up. In Las Vegas climate these are very hardy drought tolerant and super beautiful. We wanted to take 2 of them out to make room for an rv so we chopped them all the way to the ground and later would hook up a truck to pull the stumps but we waited too long and it grew again so tall and lush! Then we moved to TN.

Take a king size flat sheet and cut it like a tree skirt. Place on ground before you trim. When you are done it is easy to clean up. Just pick up sheet and dump into trash.

Nice video on trimming, I had a vey bit sage in my front yard and it partially dead after the freeze, is there any fertilizer we can make it grow bigger again?
@AnaAndreaXoxo Жыл бұрын
It can look dead at times but I think just hard prune it down. If your plant is established then it is pretty difficult to kill them. They are so resilient, drought tolerant, cold hardy.

When is the best time to replant and trim?
@AnaAndreaXoxo3 жыл бұрын
Spring and fall is the best times to plant as well as trim. We usually trim them after it's finished blooming.

When is the best time to cut back .
@AnaAndreaXoxo Жыл бұрын
Hi! We've had success cutting back any time of the year. We would cut back after they flowered in the spring and fall. But if they are looking thin or leggy we would also cut back as needed. Then it would flush back with new green foliage.

Mine isnt a bush. Its like a tree and its 6 ft tall. I wonder why mine isnt a bush? The plant was already like that when we moved in.

They can get tall and you can trim them as a tree form. I bet it looks lovely!

Bad idea.. dont do this. Take the time and selectively prune them
@AnaAndreaXoxo6 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment.These shrubs are actually 20 years old and they absolutely thrive after being pruned in this exact way, ask any landscaper out in the Las Vegas area. I wouldn't share this info otherwise. We have cut several down to Ground level and by spring it's tall, lush green and full of flowers. Not to mention most of these are 6' x 6' bushes so pruning 1 branch at a time doesn't really make sense to me since it doesn't effect their overall health. That's my experience in Southern Nevada. Take care!
