I had the privilege of meeting Gene Autry back in the 1950’s when he toured the UK . My father took me to his dressing room and he allowed me to put on his stetson, holster & gun - for a kid it was out of this world.

Wonderful Christian Americans. I got to meet Roy quite by accident when I was at his Roy Rodgers Museum many years ago in Victorville Ca. He had brought a little dog with him that day and he had the dog do some tricks. Roy, Dale, and Gene thank you all so very much for the wonderful memories, God bless, and Happy Trails to you all.

You forgot Sky King (ok, he was a more modern cowboy -- but it was great show, I thought; the song Bird (his plane), Penny and Clipper. I did get to meet Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo! In the early 1950's they appeared with their horses (Diablo and Loco, was it? -- or Poco?) with Ringling Bros/Barnum and Bailey Circus when it came to Chicago. I was about 8 or 9 yrs old and I was dumbstruck seeing them in person, shaking hands, getting autgraphed pics (long since lost). But I remember it like yesterday. (I had assumed that both Cisco and Pancho were Mexican ...Wrong! Renaldo was a Hungarian, and Carrillo, who was in his 70's when I met him (YIKES!) was a Castilian Spaniard. All I could think of at the time was how OLD they looked. Carrillo was born in 1880 !

Dale is amazing--she makes sure Gene is included. He'd lost a step and the Rogers' were very respectful.

Then too, Roy must have been confused as the question was directed to Gene. I think Gene was probably a bit older than Roy.

There was no love lost between Roy and Gene. Roy took over the singing cowboy movies while Gene was off fighting in World War II.

They were my heroes and of course I was raised on a ranch and I was surrounded by heroes in real life so I had the best of both worlds. Make believe and reality.

Gene and Roy were both great stars with huge success, but I think Gene made the larger fortune in business outside of entertainment. But in pure talent as a performer, Roy was hard to beat--he was a great singer and musician, and had talents no one else had--for example with the Sons of the Pioneers they did a song where Roy was to sing and shoot targets with his handguns while keeping time to the music, AND hitting the targets. That is a tremendous load for one performer to carry. They dropped that 'routine' for obvious reasons. Both Gene and Roy had long, enormous careers, sad the memories will continue to fade.

Too much money for too little talent ruined everything in the entertainment business. These people were worth every cent they made and more.

Autry and Rodgers made movies with good moral characters and there was never doubt right would conquer wrong. Good always won over evil. Today's movies have no moral fiber to them. The good ole days were indeed the good ole days. Saddle up partners and think of yesteryear. They were better times.

the comment about the rivalry was more the studio but I think there was a friendly rivalry between them. Why wouldn't there. they both want to perform they both want to be the best. nothing wrong with that. I do understand from interviews I've seen else where they considered each other friends and enjoyed the few times they could be together.

Gene was speaking about his 2nd wife who invested for him but he was successful in making money and investing it BEFORE her. Gene had no children let alone adopt any. Plus his first wife was happy to live in a very small starter homme and a modest life. No children and not spending any on his first wife left him more money to invest. Roy and Dale were amazing people devoted to their fans, their family and to God. I do not like Gene because he chased all his leading ladies, their words and stories, while married to his first wife. He toured and stayed in the same room with Gail Davis that he created the TV series Annie Oakley for, that affair lasted ten years and he was married the whole time. Gene never worried about getting those side GF's pregnant since he was sterile. All that time he was supposed to be a cowboy symbol for children.

No disrepect to Mr. Autry, but according to his biography (Autry's) Ken Maynard was technically the first "singing cowboy", but he never caught on like Gene in that capacity.

Yeah, John Denver did a great version; Ihad loved it as a kid, but I only learned it after I heard Quicksilver Messenger Service play it on one of their records. It's a National Treasure, a great song.
