The end of this video is great! I completely agree. I just bought a turntable about 7 months ago and have purchased over 120 brand new vinyl records. I have never been as excited about listening to music as I am now. When I tell my friends that I have spent over a couple grand on vinyl, they look at me puzzled, and iI say to them: "I don't care that I spent that money! I LOVE listening to music more now than ever!"

This past year I went through 2 different record players. Not because one was broken and I had to buy a new one but because my first record player impressed my roommates. So what I did was give It to them and showed the, how to use it and connect it to the receiver in the living room. I upgraded and bought another one for myself in my room. This christmas we all ended up buying each other different albums. I'm glad I found vinyl and got my roommates into it as well.

If digital is so good then why are so many people constantly upgrading their streaming and dac devices? I know many who change front ends almost annually to the next best thing. I have had one new turntable in 15 years...Mitchell Gyro to Acoustic Signature Double Neo. Expensive move but cheaper than changing digital each time a new best one comes out. Couldn't be happier! I sell a lot of my speaker designs based on auditions using vinyl. The only digital front end I use is an AR Ref 7 CDP which is quite fabulous. The only digital device I've owned able to match vinyl with a really well mastered CD.

9:35 Michael, I totally agree with how you said you react when people say “to tell you the truth...” during your cooking with M&M video which is “so what? You’ve been lying to me every other time??”. Then you go on to say it in this video. :-) And we all know you always tell us the truth so it must mean “I’m going to tell you a truth that you don’t know”. Thanks for helping me resolve that ‘cus like you, that ALWAYS made me go ‘hmmmm’. Cheers. Keep up the great work!

I'm a school teacher and every now and then I take my turntable to class when the students are working on group projects. Last summer I had a class of 5th grade students and I made sure I took some LPs of current popular artists. One kid exclaimed, "why does it (the music) sound so clear!?" I normally teach 7th grade students and early this school year one kid had a discouraging remark when he first saw the records. He said, "eww records". However, he was singing a different tune after I played Lorde's album. Every single person under the age of 20 whom I have exposed to records (students/relatives) is completely memorized by the sound.

It seems most people have been conditioned to think that records must sound like dusty wax cylinders being played from the other end of a hallway.

Very nice, keep up the good work. I played "Mr. Blue Sky" ( Electric Light Orchestra) for my son who is 21 - 1st streaming it from and iPad , then on record. He was simply amazed.

A little late in viewing this, but happy new year Mr Fremer! I am one of the new generation, so to speak, of vinyl lovers who is really getting into the hobby. I had records as a kid, but bought into CD's in high school and never looked back. Then I moved on to streaming, which I still do a lot of...49,652 minutes on Spotify in 2014! I love music and have it on all the time, but it was my love of graphic art (its what I do for a living) that got me back into records. I bought a few vinyls to hang on my wall strictly for the aesthetic presentation, and one day I thought...hey I have these records, I should listen to them! People are always going out about how they sound better blah blah blah. Hmm...maybe they're right? Long story short, I did just that, and my ears felt alive. CD's and streaming are great, and convenient, but NOTHING sounds like a great record on a good turntable. I'm on my second TT setup now, as I lost my other one, and my growing record collection, in a bad house fire (not to mention my 500+ CDs)...but I'm bouncing back just fine with a great vintage set up! Keep up the good work. Keep spinnin'

Great video (I know I'm late). Regardless of the subject matter, the last 4 minutes should be required viewing for all youngsters just beginning to make their way in the world. I'll be playing it to my two kids for sure.

I cannot somehow become a registered member to your Analog Planet website! However, I wanted to use this space to thank you for your review of Steely Dan's Greatest Hits double record album! I never knew they sounded so good nor that the pieces that I grew up with were theirs or that their music style was called Jazz Rock. Outstanding!

Hi Michael First time visit to your page, and loved this video. I agree with many of your sentiments concerning vinyl, and i think you nailed it by calling it 'timeless'. It certainly is THE format for listening to music, it puts you in the right frame of mind, the process of placing the vinyl on the platter and dropping the needle gets you involved in the music before you even hear a note. It's crazy the amount of vinyl being pressed, although sadly some of it isn't needed and is just being pressed by the larger companies trying to jump on the bandwagon and make a few quid. Hopefully with United getting more pressing facilities then others will follow suit, and enable the smaller independent labels to get their product out within a decent timeframe. This way 2015 should be a great year for vinyl, I know from visiting my local record stores the younger generation are picking vinyl up for the first time, which is great for the format. Oh, and Happy New Year!! Dean

A long time Stereophile fan here. Yes Michael, when a record is cut from a high resolution master, it sounds great, warm and natural. The problem with CD is that we never get the master file on it. I did my testing recently and finally bought the 24/88 master of the Systematic Chaos album by Dream Theater. The CD version sounds harsh, flat and lifeless compared to the studio master. No doubt, the CD files are only a third of the size and they sound that way. Also, you guys did a review of the PSB Image 4T pair of speakers in 2002, I believe. You guys decided to put it in class D, but I have been listening to them for the past 16 years and I still find it hard to justify buying a new pair of speakers from any manufacturer today. These speakers just bring music to my heart and they can be highly resolving if given a proper room. They also look and sound like the day I bought them and I will probably keep them for the next 16 years. Take care, Michael and I wish you all the best.

+Analog Planet Do you know of a nice record store in Sarasota, Florida, where we vacation every end of the year (mostly )? How should I pick up some classic Jazz (Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Charles among us, etc) and where should I buy me a Dual 1019 record player?
@rbruce63

Analog Planet thanks Mr. Fremer for taking your time to respond! I'm currently working on dad's Dual 1010a but the 1229 and the 1019 are the ones that I long for and some nice jazz! Like the one students play in Kansas City MO Blue Room! Cheers from Costa Rica!

Analog Planet oh, and I succumbed to the modern remastered Essential Miles Davis, indeed it's a compilation, but wanted quantity over "Kind of Blue" quality and being both at US$50 I chose the two LP album. There is another compilation called Davis and Monk...plus a monoaural. I need to freshen up on the concepts of yore: "Original Master Recording" vs Remasterization and Digitally Remastering! It seems that direct to disk should be the real thing too!

There are many types of music formats today, all have there place. if you are willing to spend a little money on your stereo system it will be the best investment you will ever make, there is not a better bang for the buck than good stereo equipment and good sound. All formats can have very good sound and it is getting better, my favorite is vinyl and cds, on good equipment. Im not sure what all the fuss is about, drop the needle and enjoy, music is the international language.

I can't help but think that the people you should be thanking for the resurgence of vinyl are the file sharers. Now that it's possible to "find" almost any CD as a series of FLAC files, the only way for the record companied to turn their recordings into a profit making venture (as hi-res media have effectively failed) is to release them on (physically) uncopyable vinyl. That and the hipsters of course...

Have to disagree with you a bit because I really believe vinyl sourced from digital kind of loses the whole point of vinyl which is to be analog. As Dobie Gray said "...the original is still the greatest!"
