I'm finding toy collecting in general much more fun now I have left all Facebook groups dealing with Star Wars. Facebook is a breading ground for hate and anger unless the groups are moderated by nice people who treat everyone with respect and curtsey. Some of the larger groups have lost their way in this area and allow vile and awful things to be said about other people and their views. I'd rather not be a part of that. Toys should be and are for everyone to enjoy. And I won't tolerate any hatred or anger towards anyone over pieces of plastic.

Excuse me, Tony, but I think you dropped the mic. Two points....I've been collecting toys since the 70s and it's ALWAYS been for fun. Collecting toys for their monetary value is fool's gold, in my opinion. My other point is about "future generations of collectors". They're a myth. Those of us in our 30s to 50s have a deep connection to certain franchises that younger generations do not. When we're gone, I doubt they'll be large numbers of younger people clamoring for this stuff.

Collect have fun be merry either vintage, repurposed and new collect all. Just enjoy your hobby at the end of the day it's a bunch of painted plastic and rubber that takes up space in your home that's for your enjoyment and pleasure. Star Wars is a billion dollar brand and one of the most worldwide popular franchises, like I said before collect all have fun be merry there's bigger issues to worry about.

Thank you for this. I was recently kicked out of a Star Wars toys Facebook group for defending another person who was being criticized for not knowing the difference between an original, and a repro lightsaber. These people brag about how much money they spend, and are complete snobs. When I called them out I was kicked out of the group and blocked. Cowards. So seeing your video made me very happy.

I made the mistake of dismissing these " anti-repro " fanatics as just a small group of wankers, who should be ridiculed for their beliefs and actions! But thanks to Tony and Michael, I know realise how deeply troubling and disturbing, their behaviour has become! NO ONE has the right to tell you what you can and cannot do with your life and to try and bully people into what toys you can collect, is not only absurd, but also reprehensible! After all, we are just talking about small bits of plastic, aren't we!

It amazes me how the anti-repro group can get so hung up on this issue. Classic car owners have been using reproduction parts for years and you don't see this divisive behavior. Even the great art works of the world have been touched up and repaired by other artists. Mozart's Requiem was completed by another composer after he died. Does it makes these things less beautiful or desirable? And we are fighting over toys! Let's put this in perspective people. It's your collection, do it in a way that makes you happy.

It's funny, when you said that many in the SW fandom say that if you can't afford to collect vintage, you shouldn't be collecting. I've run into this sentiment in the Transformers fandom, but the irony is that it mostly comes from those who collect, almost exclusively, the mostly very expensive third party figures NOT produced by Hasbro!

lol, that'll be the day someone tells me I'm not a real collector or fan of something because I'd rather complete my Mauler with a few repro parts that only cost me a few dollars, over a vintage part that costs me more that the toy itself. These groups can go govern them selves, I don't need their hypocritical opinions on my collection or how I collect. You see this in just about everything now, the hobby starts with everyone friends, enjoying the passion. Then someone suddenly thinks they have authority over everyone, and starts shouting out the does and don'ts. Tony I whole heartily agree with you, it's your collection, you do what suits you. Besides, these Repos are some of the best work out there, and their just fans like us, and likes us, they want the coolest looking stuff possible. Much like my friend at Zarnista Studios I came back to collecting vintage Starwars figures a couple of years ago, I restore using toy polloi’s excellent tips and am now also hooked on the likes of stansolo who do great work. The breakdown of the different groups positions in this video is the best and frankly the most easy to understand I’ve seen so far. I joined some of the more anti repro groups when I first took up the hobby thinking they’d be a good resource , and then left quite quickly after being mocked just for asking certain questions

Great Job, Tony!!! I love repos! Smith Lord Creations and Stan Solo are two of the best. I hope they continue to make more repos of the original Kenner line, especially the hard to find POTF figures (If any of them are reading this, I’m really hoping they or another repo maker does a 1985 POTF EV9D9. That guy is impossible to find loose and not broken for less than $500. But, that is my point. I’m just a 43 year guy who wants to own a piece of my childhood and not break my bank. Well spoken Tony!! I agree 100%.🤘🏻😎 Back when I had Facebook I joined a FB-group for GI Joe ARAH collectors since GI Joe has been my lifelong favorite toyline (Vintage Kenner Star Wars at #2). Most people in the group were friendly but as soon as I asked if anyone could give me advice on where to find repro-parts like small microphones and headsets for figures I have but can’t afford to spend 200$ on a tiny piece of plastic things went downhill. Someone wrote a comment like ”here we go again” and shortly after the bashing began. I left the group there and then. My view on the topic is that it’s totally fine with repro parts and custom designs of figures we never got. When you collect vintage toys as a hobby you develop skills based on your knowledge of the toys to know reproductions from originals. In my huge GI Joe collection of several hundred figures and vehicles I don’t have any reproductions apart from some Black Major customs and that’s only because I’m having a hard time finding them, probably because of the Anti-Repro-Bullies. The next step for me, I guess, would be saving up for 3D-printer and make my own replacement parts. I fully support creators of replacements & customs. Your collection - Your Rules!🖤

Holy crap. I never realized this was such an issue. I've been collecting and customizing Star Wars and GIJoe figures since the 70's. I've got a sizable collection that I will never part with and my son isn't interested in it at all (nor are any of the kids he hangs around with) which kinda shows that this is a passion of our generation and not future ones. Honestly, they don't care. I've never found an Imperial Dignitary figure or Blue Snaggletooth and if a repro figure group made one that didn't cost a hundred bucks I'd gladly buy it. The point is, my collection is MY COLLECTION. It isn't dictated by some weird toy dictator purity group that we can only have original figures in our collections. That's friggin insane. Toys are supposed to be fun. It's no wonder kids want no part of this hobby as these jerks drive away anyone who goes against their manic desires.

Exactly! Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure in 25 years our generation's action figure collections are going to be about as easy to unload as grandpa's stamps and grandma's china is today. Right on brother! You've hit the nail on the head once again. As for the future collectors, if they have a mind to, I am certain they will have the intelligence to figure out the origins of the toys they wish to collect. As a completists, I've heavily relied on repros to complete items, a lot of repro items were replaced by originals eventually - some not as the repros were much better quality than the originals. I've got absolutely no issues with reproduction stuff as long as they are sold as that. Dealers are greedy and demand way too much for original items, this is what has created the repro boom in the first place. I say fair play to those guys putting the effort into making this stuff, most of it is fantastic. All my Corgi stuff looks great with new stickers and little red missiles, my Six Million Dollar Men and Maskatron have better socks than the originals. I'm going to get them as beat up as they may be and spruce them up. Why not just get mint ones? A) because that will take all my savings and B) because I remember the state my originals were after the years of play and restoring them to their former glory seems a nice thing to do- (insert "the circle is complete" quotation here!).

I am for the repo market. What makes these things so collectable is the nostalgia of owning them as kids. If I have an original Mattel Skeletor, but I am missing his havoc staff I have no issue in getting a repo to complete it. It is the resellers that are ruining it for the true collectors and the reason behind our drive to do so. Hey if you want all original parts that is fine too.

@androstempest
@androstempest 4 жыл бұрын
I collected when I was a kid and my entire collection was genuine vintage because, obviously, they were all NEW at the time I bought them and all palitoy or kenner. While I have a great nostalgia for the original toys, I played with them, I lost accessories I even broke a couple. In short I know non of them are worth much, if anything, despite being vintage. Because my collection sits in a draw unloved and largely forgotten, I don’t really care if other people are arguing about selling theirs and what their value is or is not. Because the true value of mine is the memories I have of playing with them as a child. Because nostalgia is the only value they have to me, when I see repro products that match the quality of my memories, I’m impressed not repulsed. I’m also a transformer collector, and that community has much the same issues of bootlegs, third party product and various reproduction and reissue toys affecting the resale market. But again, a large part of that collection I only own because of a love of the characters, or an appreciation of the design work, not a love of Hasbro. As a consequence if I was sat at the hypothetical debate table I’m at the end, neither concerned that repro stuff exists, nor passionate about purchasing or selling only genuine vintage product. True, if I encountered an ebay seller passing off a reproduction as vintage, I’d be pissed off. That’s criminal. But if I encountered a reproduction seller selling reproductions as reproductions and the quality was good and the price was fair, I’d be happy for that product to exist. It’s not up to fans to police this stuff, that’s what hasbro hire lawyers for. If their brand is being tarnished in any way, they need to deal with it. Because when the fans start turning on each other like this, they just turn their happy memories into something ugly.

I think they must have had really good lives to be making fuzz about collecting toys. They need a dose of real problems. I also believe what Gojitron said, future generations would never understand how it was to be alive in the 70s and 80s, the world was different back then, so the emotional attachment we have to the toys we loved as kids is a very generational thing, so I believe there are not going to be too many collectors of this stuff after our generation has left the planet. Greeting from Chile.

The only reason for opposition to repro toys is fear of driving down prices of items those people own. Like Tony said, only the rich can collect in their minds. It is selfish. The repros being made now are clearly marked, and most aren’t even really repros. Take out the investment aspect and I do not understand why anyone would care at all. Hasbro has been putting out crap and hard to find crap at that. If they wanted to, they could put some effort into their toys and regain the market share they had 10 to 20 years ago.

Like Tony said, it drives the prices UP, not down. They've used the repro market to their own advantage.

I’ve watched this video twice now in the last couple months and I couldn’t help myself but to go on Facebook and give them a piece of my mind. It reminds me of that anti droid bartender who says “we don’t serve their kind”.

Right on point. I recently returned to social media, I was gone for almost a year and the reason I left was the toxicity of it all. There is not a subject you could talk about that doesn't have toxic people ready to shoot you for whatever reason. Literally my first memory as a child is waching Star Wars with my parents and the moment I saw people attacking each other because of the way they collect, insulting each other because of how they thought you should collect or what you should collect, or what year should be stamped on your Bespin Luke's leg, that's the moment I said you know what? This isn't fun anymore. I want to enjoy this shit, I rather do it alone. As I said I recently returned, and the toxicity still there.

Nice video Tony. I try to only collect genuine vintage figures just because those are what I grew up. I think repro stuff is fine and some of the new custom figures are pretty awesome. I think I need to order that shiny C3PO. Keep up the good content.

Great video!!! I look at it like classic cars. If you want parts for a classic car there many resources that will provide you will great repo parts. If you want to spend the and find original parts and wish to pay for a vintage, say hood ornament which may be much more expensive so be it. But, Don't look down on those that wish to save money or on a budget to bring a vintage toy back to a new appearance with repo parts. The sad reality is everyone that is collecting all these toys in 40-50 as we all start kicking the bucket I highly doubt they will have the same value to the generations behind us. Enjoy your toys 100% real or repo and leave others to enjoy theirs.

Found a Kenner B-wing for a great price last year. Missing the wing cannons and cockpit glass, of course. Had no trouble finding a modern era cockpit that fit fine. Had a devil of a time sourcing cannons for the wings. So I bought 3D printed cannons instead. I'll let you guess how upset I am about having them on my B-wing. Spoiler alert: Not that upset.

Excellent video! The star stands thing always made absolutely no sense to me as they are repros of the ones that came with the Palitoy Death Star, a very rare piece in itself, yet they are championed to everyone as being must have items in every display. Collect what makes you happy, not what people tell you you should collect.

Fantastic video Tony, what a brilliantly constructed and presented argument! If only everyone would simply understand, and when it comes to collecting, just live and let live, my collection consists of original vintage and repro star wars action figures and accessories, without repro stuff I wouldn't be able to afford blasters! Never mind certain action figures! Keep up the great work my friend, your stance on this subject is 100% on the money 👍

Amazing that some people are so bothered about what other people choose to buy with their own money. They're just toys. With the state of the world today these people need some perspective. Agree with you Tony and thanks for your service man.

Appreciate how utterly objective Mr. Tony is in his videos. Its a shame and ironic that the ones doing the most & worst damage to Star Wars toys & fandom are the utter elitist groups who blindly love only Official Star Wars items, even if those groups who seem hellbent to create their lame version of the Borg hive mentality and force their take on Star Wars on those who don't follow their party line.

The rocket firing Boba Fett is a repro, Kenner never actually made them. Someone found the blue prints for it and only made a few then destoryed the mold. Making it a one of a kind. So, the rocket firing Boba Fett IS a repro, and I'll bet you'd want that!
