I was already done with Star Wars toys by the time these came out, so I had no idea they even existed until I started collecting again as an adult. So I have no nostalgia for them, but I do like the Jabba's palace ones like Amanaman and Yak Face quite a bit!

Same. I was deeply into G.I.JOE at that point mainly because they were more articulate and I got tired of the 5 POA. My friend did have Stormtrooper Disguise Luke, which I thought was cool, Death Star Gunner, and Amanaman.

I don't think the request jar is open for SS future projects, but there are loads of things he could possibly do, which I hope he does at least some of them! My idea was he could do Oola variants in different skin colours (which would also save on tooling masters). It will be interesting to see where he goes this year, but he definitely ploughs his own furrow (which I think is actually a good thing, especially in a community where everyone has an opinion!)

Last 15 really, Paploo and Lumat appeared on ROTJ cards first but people have this mystique built around 17. And Anakin was a mail away first. Thus those 3 are more common loose then the others, but value and scarcity obsessed twits have long defined this hobby. The Imperial Gunner without the chest "armor" was in Return of the Jedi.

I couldn't agree with you more. Like you, I was pretty much over my obsession with SW by the time the last 17 were released. It was Kenner trying to squeeze the last drop of Dollars out of SW in an attempt to stimulate interest again, from lads like myself. They even threw in a coin to collect. I've only just started collecting SW figures and ships, to relive my childhood, and was utterly flabbergasted at what the last 17 go for. But hey, collectors and completionists are a funny old breed. Thanks for another fantastic video.

To help tell the difference in the Ewoks - Lumat has the bent arm, Warok has the tilted head. I was born in 79 so these figures were on discount as I was getting into Star Wars toys. That said, while I had most of these, until recently I had no idea Amanaman, Barada and Imperial gunner even existed.

I'd grown out of Star Wars by 84/85, so didn't realise these figures (or Trilogo cards) existed until I started collecting again in the mid 90's. Totally agree that there was some strange figure choices and odd omissions that would have sold better (Rebel Fleet Trooper, Moff Tarkin etc.). I think their reputation of supposed rarity during the pre-internet days has stuck with them (hence the crazy prices), even though none of them are particularly scarce.

The amount of Ewoks made for the Kenner line makes sense given how Lucas was betting on their popularity from ROTJ with kids. Better to have a nice selection of Ewoks than not have them and kids wanting more. Also, having more characters from ROTJ in the POTF line also makes sense since ROTJ was the most recent film. However, I do agree with you in regards that Kenner should have included more characters from ANH and ESB in the POTF line.

If the market in 85 were collector driven (it never actually is for new toys) a Grand Moff Tarkin would have made sense.....but in 85 you had two Ewok made for TV movies and an upcoming Ewok Cartoon..... zero cartoons about an old guy that got blown up 8 years prior. Its almost a shock that the last 17 weren't 17 different Ewoks.

To clarify, the Imperial Gunner is in fact also a ROTJ character/figure. This is denoted by the fact that he isn’t wearing body armour of which distinguishes him from his ‘New Hope predecessors of whom did. Further confirmation of this can be found on the figure’s backing card photo, sans armour and clearly dating from the production of ‘Jedi. Of the fabled Last 17 figures then this makes ‘Luke in Stormtrooper Disguise’ a unique and certainly strange inclusion indeed!

@@toypolloi Yes, sort of. They were present during the Emperor’s grandiose arrival on the Death Star, likely to beef up the numbers of (non matte painted) rank and file. Given that their costume was considerably more simplified than in ANH though it was clear they were intended merely as background decoration. Incidentally a probe droid prop (like the one Han destroyed on Hoth in ESB) was also present in the parade scene and I believe there’s a few production photos with two of the aforementioned Imperial Gunners posing with it… EDIT: Just seen an ROTJ screenshot depicting the assembled troops plus Vader kneeling before the Emperor’s newly arrived shuttle. The probe droid is at the top left and there standing before it are some non-armoured Imperial Gunners of which the Last 17 figure is based on!

I did see the figures for sale in 1985 (TOY WORLD), but didn't get any of them. On first sight, the new packaging and collector's coin threw me off, I wasn't sure if they were part of the same (classic) STAR WARS Kenner lines. I was a teenager at the time, and was pretty much done collecting the figures (sold off my childhood figures in 1987). However, I do remember liking this latest batch of action-figures. It's a pity that there wasn't a second wave of "STAR WARS - The Power of The Force" figures.

I was 20 when ROTJ came out. Loved the movie, and indeed, bought (and opened) the figures. I slowly drifted out of Star Wars (heresy, I hear some people saying), and got into other things, music mainly. I still made model kits, though, and on a trip to my local hobby shop, in about 1986 time, saw racks of Star Wars figures I'd never seen before. The shop was selling them as three figures for £1. I got all bar Yak Face and Anakin. Returning to the shop a few days later, it was obvious that the figures were not selling. A week or so later - they had gone, and I later found out where - landfill. (sigh). The late 1980's were a dark time to be a Star Wars collector. It seems to be repeating now, with shops full of unsold 3.75" sequel figures. And mobody buying them. Good video, and an honest reason for not liking them. The only one I have now is an Anakin I got from a car boot sale. All the rest were a bit "Meh", and got rid of over time.

The only ones I had were Luke, Dignitary and Anakin, I really liked them at the time. I never saw any of the others and I guess my interest started too wain at the same time so it all just pittered out with a wimper. These came out so late in the run they were not much more novelty at the time. My local hardware shop Bulls had all these at 59p back in ‘85 and I picked up all but Artoo, EV-9D9, Romba and Lumat. Of course aside from Lando, Han, and the two Lukes they weren’t anything special and for me their fate was sealed at a car boot sale in 1988 where nearly all my stuff went in the name of growing up. Wish I still had ‘em.

I had a surprising amount of last 17 as a child, considering I was less enthused with Jedi and had moved on after the Rancor and Jabba needs were met... but I did have EV, Stormtrooper Luke, Anakin, and Carbonite Han. While Han was a terrible figure, I very much liked the Carbonite gimmick. The fact that Anakin and the Imperial dignitary didn't even have hands which could hold items rendered them largely useless for play value. Obviously everyone can agree that additional droid colors would have made more sense. I think it largely came down to Kenner wanting to make product from only the newest story in the days without vcr, dvd, internet, or video games to keep it fresh in memory, but the fact Kenner never revisited the missing Cantina aliens is mind boggling now. Especially considering how deep they were interested in going with Jabba alien designs.

Their popularity is an easy one - everyone of "our" generation was into Star Wars. We all drifted out or away, and when we found our way back, there were these "unknown" figures - a whole new wave to collect. They provided a new set to enjoy when we didn't have much that was new to buy. Hence their prices just kept going up. Thanks to Stan Solo, we can have many of these on a good budget and with no fear of breakage.

I feel pretty much as you do about the last 17. I differ with most fans in regards to that Luke Stormtrooper figure though. I'm not much of a fan of it. The novelty of a removable helmet is a great idea, but the execution just isn't there. When you see that misshapen, tiny Luke potato head beneath the helmet....well, to me, it just looks nothing like the character or any other version of Luke in the line. That weird, little head is just miniature, like one of those Russian dolls with a smaller doll inside. lol. It's kind of goofy-looking, if I'm honest. That one is just for the novelty, and that's about it. Even with today's action figures, I don't enjoy figures with the removable helmet gimmick because it means badly proportionate or tiny heads are going to be beneath to fit the helmet on, or the helmet will be oversized to fit the head beneath, which again, throws the proportions of the figure off. Either way, it is weird. I'd much prefer two separate sculpted heads that you could change out. Of all the figures from the last 17, the R2D2 with the pop-up light saber is my favorite. Yeah, it is like the Sensorscope R2, but it differs in the gimmick in that it actual raises the saber with the click of the head. It's not the most amazing gimmick of all time, but it does distinguish itself from the Empire version. The Sensorscope R2D2 had the same sort of gimmick, but the scope had to be pulled out manually with your fingers. The scope tended to get trashed overtime from fingernail damage. It's nearly impossible to find a good version of the Sensorscope R2 where the Sensorscope top hasn't taken a beating. Besides, it's not even a "sensorscope" anyway--it's a bloody periscope! lol. I actually like EVE 9D9 a lot. He's just a fun looking character, and the mouth gimmick was unique to him. He just is not play-friendly due to his weak arms and legs. They are notorious for breaking as they are incredibly spindly. That's a bit of a let-down. The A-Wing pilot is the best of the entire last 17 in my opinion! He has the best sculpt! He reminds me of a cosmonaut or something, and I like him. His gun isn't much to right home about, but he's just a quality figure. What kid could would resist the Imperial Dignitary, I ask you?? lol. That one is such a mort. No kid would have wanted that figure. No connection to it, and he's just a non-entity. He's like a politician for goodness sake! Hey, kids! Your politician figure is waiting for you at Toys 'R Us! Come get one! Uhm, yeah... Thanks for the fun review of the last 17. Completists do try to collect these, and I have several, though many of mine are actually Stan Solo versions. I'd love to get an original A-Wing pilot, but he is very tough to find here below $300. I just can't see shelling out that much cash for a 4" loose figure. Maybe someday, I'll luck out and get one for a more reasonable sum though.

I wonder how these figures would be viewed if they were part of the original waves of figures? I personally haven't much of a problem with most of the last 17 figures existing, there were a number of "filler figures" produced before this last wave, but to produce four more Ewoks when there were four Ewok figures already in existence! He's an important character that gets talked about and referred to throught the trilogy, and I think we would complain that they didn't produce Anakin to wrap the whole thing up. I certainly would. :) I do wish Endor Luke's helmet would be removable as Leia's was. He could be a two-in-one figure seeing as how he's in his dueling outfit (minus the vest). My favourite figure is still the first figure I ever got, which was the Snowtrooper. I woke up one morning and may dad had hung it from the door handle in my bedroom, great figure. I must say I do like the Luke in storm trooper armour, but like you I have a bias as I love the troopers and droids.

No Tarkin or Rebel Trooper in the wave - fail! FOUR MORE EWOKS! Gah! Endoor Luke could have been good with a removable helmet, but no. However, I will always be thankful for this wave giving me Stormtrooper Luke and pop-up lightsabre R2... good times!

I had kinda moved on to Transformers in 85 and I was surprised to see these new figures in the shops. I wasn't very interested in them. But a few months later they were all in the bargain bin at Woolies for 49p each. I had some birthday money on me so I thought why not. I picked up 12 of the 17. So lucky looking back at how much they cost now. Amannaman's arm snapped as soon as I got him home. I do like them now but you're right. They should have released more figures from the other movies. Worst has to be Royal dignitary. Ace video Dave.💥💥💥💥💥

Now I like the Imperial Dignitary. For me it gave me another bad guy. I would use him as a base commander of a Planet and he would have Royal Guard protection. As for Anakin, He would be used as a town leader or some poor sod needing help from the Rebels. When I saw this line up in my local toyshop. Ran home and my Mum,, rung them up and asked them to put one of each aside and I would be down with the cash to play for them. Only one I did not get was Amanaman. He was a later addition from a shop in Manchester and was the very last figure to complete my collection until I found out about Blue Snag.

I never bothered with any of the last 17. I think after the release of Return of The Jedi figures, I didn’t see any of the last 17 in my local toy shops. My last ever original figure I remember buying was Bib Fortuna and that was the summer of 1984. By this time any way, I was buying my first Ibanez electric Guitar and was saving up like mad to pay the monthly installments. It was Guitar and LPs from then on.

I was lucky to own all of these last 17 figures and still do so I have a strong nostalgia connection to these even the imperial dignity figure and anakin, I was lucky to own almost the entire Star Wars collection from Kenner with the exception of hammerhead, blue snaggletooth, goth rebel trooper and Death squad commander. Great memories.

It never crossed my mind if they were the worst but I know in my case they are the rarest and hard to find besides ebay. In many years (I started collecting in 1987) I never found any of these 17 last figures I got them from ebay at $$$ price and Im still missing 7 of them which I doubt I will have them since vintage figs cost a lot.

This POTF line was one my favorites. It really starts nailing some of the esoteric characters. I had most of this line bitd sans YakFace (stateside); I seem to recall getting most of these guys at Montgomery Wards and Toy r us stores. I do agree though… too many Ewoks. For me, lack of human skiff guards is glaring. Maybe more denizens of Star Wars cantina or a Admiral Piett.

Although I'm a casual fan at best regarding 'Star Wars', especially in terms of figures - 'Masters of the Universe' has always been my biggest love - I really enjoyed this video; Maybe there's an idea in it for a new series of videos TP - different waves of various long-running toylines, which one was the best and which was the one where they were really scraping the barrel? :)

I never warmed to that line. But I was around 16 years old by then. I was with girls by then and took my younger brother with me into toy shops as a diversion. But being in Australia, we got the carded Yak Face. Anannaman was another favorite of mine and I got my younger brother to take Han in Carbonite to the counter while I came up and payed for it looking the other way. I hated Luke Srormtrooper but I got him anyway. I think I was just over it by then. The Power of the Force figures in Australia at the time were 5.99 and I didn't like that. In 1986 they dropped them to 3.99 whilst Return of the Jedi carded figures were at 59 cents. For some reason I bought up big. I was working and could afford to do so. I ended up with over 300 carded figures, mostly ROTJ carded but a lot of POTF figures including 10 Annikin Skywalkers. While I was out working my younger brothers and sister found them and ripped them off their cards. They left me with 10 including 1 Annikin Skywalker. Just before The Phantom Menace dropped in '99 I took a gamble and sold them to a dude that owned a vintage toyshop (He had a carded Yak Face in his shop at the time for 700 dollars. Ads in newspapers wanting to buy Star Wars figures). He only wanted Annikin on the mint unpunched POTF card but ended up buying all. 3000 dollars and I think I actually ripped him off...

Hey Dave great video as always, I agree in the most part, the line was definitely Ewok heavy, and figures like imp dig, Anakin etc do nothing for me either. However, the last 17 do contain a handful of figures I actually really like, A Wing pilot, stormy Luke, imp Gunner, EV 9D9. But definitely agree there were some strange choices in there. Thanks for such a comprehensive look at these. Keep up the great work buddy. P.S and what’s with Baradas outfit? Looks like he got in to Princes wardrobe 😂🤷‍♂️

Too many Ewoks? Cough! Splutter! Man alive, did I hear you right?! You say that on the forest moon of Endor and see what happens. 😉 Back in the late 80's, as the last embers of Star Wars craze slowly cooled, a friend of mine sold me his Han Solo in carbonite, R2-D2 with pop up sabre and Luke in Stormtrooper disguise. I thought they were pretty cool and had no idea they were part of the famous last 17. The one thing that bugged me was that, for some reason, Luke was taller than the previous Stormtrooper figure! I also remember that that Han figure went on to become my Indiana Jones stand in. Jumping forward to present day and do I still have them? Nooooo! Of course not! All I have is the carbonite block, the green sabre and Luke's helmet. I have collected all of the Ewoks though so, ya know, every cloud. 😄
