The glory days of toys when the manufacturers gave you the parts and pieces to make your own adventure... today everything has to be its own figure or a repaint with the exact same stuff included.

The customizability of these International Heroes is stunning. The fact that customizing was so much a part of the play pattern with Action Man/G.I. Joe almost seems unique. I don't remember many other toy lines where customization was encouraged by manufacturers and their creating retail product to accomplish it. Another excellent and informative video, Tony.

Thanks for another great video it’s amazing what memories you have triggered. I had forgotten the small clips (which I recall were very fiddly to attach) on the parachute harness. Great times throwing my Red Devil from the top of the playground slide! I also think I can recall the smell of the tank commander jacket!

Our house used to look down upon a closed down Catholic school. From my attic bedroom in the three story terrace, I could look down and see two action men left on the roof. I managed to climb on the roof and get them. The wall around the school had broken glass on top set into the concrete, I had to lay a towel across it to climb over it. I felt like a real commando on that mission. 😂

It’s great to see these figures again. I had four Action Men in the early 1980’s with various outfits. My favourite was a British guardsman uniform. It came with a bearskin hat, but after watching ‘Zulu’ I tried to fashion my own pith helmet out of paper to make him look like one of the defenders of Rorke’s Drift! That UN soldier looks great, but I would ditch the UN bollocks and give him a British beret! In that tropical service dress with the SLR he could be a British soldier in Aden circa 1967! 👍🏻

Nostalgia. I remember a friend having the German soldier figure in about 1972 or 1973 and I had the British Commando(?). We were about 7 years old. I couldn't understand why he wanted the German as we are Welsh. Fast forward to the 1990s, he moved to Germany and married a German so maybe he knew something back in the day. Like I said NOSTALGIA. Thanks for the video.

This brings back memories, I had the German paratrooper, the UN uniform and also the US paratrooper uniform. I've often thought about collecting a few for nostalgias sake, but it's too expensive where I'm living now as Action Man products are very expensive on ebay and the shipping is almost the same price as the item. I'm not paying out hundreds of dollars for something I could buy for a few quid at a flea market in the UK. Although I did manage to pick up one eagle eyed Action Man amongst all the GI Joes in my local antique shop.

Every time I show my action figures and models to my parents they complain about the size being too small. Now I can see why these damn models were huge! And had a lot of charisma and character! Amazing info and vid. Right regrettably as a teen, I had accumulated over 20 action men and a few GI Joes with fixed hands, gripping hands, eagle eyes etc. had a couple of talking ones too. Had nearly everything being spoilt kids, Hamleys and Harrods toy dept, the word ‘No’ never existed in my family lol. So you can imagine how much stuff I had, jeeps, tank, motorcycle, sea wolf sub, helicopter, training towers, nearly most of the blister packs of equipment, weapons, uniforms, sent off for so much stuff with the stars collections, dog, century box etc etc. The equipment that worked and classed as dangerous now- the bazooka shooting my mothers cigarettes out, mortar too lol. We shot all the figures with a .410 shotgun, blowing them to pieces, set things on fire and literally was chucking handfuls of equipment, accessories, uniforms, everything, burnt the lot. Looking back, what a twat! Utter and total P narse!

Great Videos 😊 I was born in 1972 and my cousin was a few years older…. I was 3 3/4 kid mostly Star Wars but I did love the 12 inch GI Joe line but didn’t have a lot of those but my cousin did but he was a jerk and wouldn’t let me play with them. Sadly he passed away in his 40’s and not long after his mom passed also and my Mom and I had to deal with the estate and I remember going into his childhood room and finding his old 1960’s GI Joes way back in his closet and taking them home were they still are today hopefully he’s ok with that.

WOW absolutely blew me away watching this I was a huge fan of action man in the late 70's to early 80's I had Tom Stone the first black action man. I had the atomic man which I think was a rip off of the six million dollar man. I was still collecting and playing up to the age of 12 maybe 13. My friend next door was a huge fan also. I remember saving up the red stars and you used to get a basic action man through the post. The look the postman gave my mom handing a plane 13 inch box over lol. Really enjoyed the video. Thankyou 👍

It is weird how the latest Action Man sets (The small ones, not the Deluxe) seem to have this same feel. They really need just a few accessories to make them shine (a few pieces from my old kit and the Officer Candidate is a UNIT soldier from the Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee era of Dr. Who). This makes sense when you have a lot of older sets and parts to pull from, but to do it now just send people off to other places to make it work.

A long time ago, both of my brothers had a pretty thorough collection of these figures and boxes of accessories. I called them their "Barbie Dolls" which did not please them. Whenever possible I would snatch my sister's pink plastic Barbie car and put two of my brothers' figures hugging each other in it. Yeah, it was cruel, but I considered them a colossal waste of time and money, which was in short supply at the time.

Am perplexed, as MY x 3 Action Men ALSO had varying international weapons/uniforms, yet they were NOTHING to do with this later (1979) series, as by then I wuz into "Girls, M/cycles, Girls, Electric Guitars & (Erm), GIRLS !!!!! - My dalliance w/Action Man was 1969-1973 or 74 "Rifle Rack", 17th/21st Hussars, Royal Household Cavalry, French Resistance, Wehrmacht, plus some bizarre Orange Frogman's suit (!), also, "Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders" (smart) Also, THIS, below, which MIGHT date it as early as 1968 ? You collected coupons (side boxes) & sent-away for a "Boxer Guard/Mastiff Boxer Dog" IIRC, it wasn't commercially available, only by tokens on official products. By chance, WE as a family had a STUNNING Boxer doggie as a pet (loved her to bitz !) That's THE main reason I asked my Mum to send-away, request, via Mail-Order (Palitoy ?) Around 1971//1972 I nagged her to buy the "Action Man HORSE" - (I still have it !!!!!!) Aside from the official Boxer Dog & huge Black Horse, I also had the solid plastic "Rubber Dinghy Assualt Boat" (complete w/working outboard motor) I also had the fabulous "Daimler or AEC Armoured Car" - It seemed HUUUUGE !!!!! I sincerely believe I still have ALL FOUR of the latter, all licenced official products (The 'Action Man Boxer Dog/Mastiff' is still here, in this bedroom cabinet as I type. However, my MAIN "love" (pets aside !), were my AIRFIX kits, my true love All of my own Action Men had "hair" (velvety artificial), the very first year it came out Any of you lads have ANY idea when that 1st-year was ? Also, can ANY of you "resonate" with the earlier equipment I've mentioned ????? P.S - Everything I've mentioned (had), were ALL "official licenced products** **(none of it 'aftermarket' BTW)

It's a shame proper Action Man toys are no longer a thing, Considering how much toys cost these days - especially Lego, I reckon they could sell these at a profit. I guess the main sticking point is that military based toys are out of favour, but I guess kids could have a non military figure bought for them and then buy accessories.
