There's plenty of fun to be had with it, and it's also fun in co-op mode cause it makes you feel like a bad-ass, unstoppable team. And how the killed Becket after saying his telepathic potential is outstanding and being able to fight Alma yet Fettel comes (who IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD) and does that to him? Biggest missed opportunity in this game - they failed to make use of the fact that Paxton Fettel got a new body at the end of the FEAR 2 DLC. They just flat-out pretended it didn't happen. But why? Why not have Fettel make his return in corporeal form, maybe with some super powers, and team up with the stoic point man like Loki in the Thor films. If they'd made the point man silent again, but had a snarky Fettel as a teammate, it could have been a fantastic pairing. Instead, we get grumpy angry-faced point man and his beard, and his ghost pal, and a story that has too much spectacle and not enough competent writing.

ahah, well, atleast Perseus Mandate had good soundtrack. Not spectacular, but good, even so you used pieces of it here, hehe. Weirdly, back in 2007, Perseus Mandate was the first FEAR game I got introduced to. FEAR 3 was the biggest dissapointment. FEAR 2 beta was the best, since it had most of FEAR 1 physics, so weapons felt like weapons. Also, about Fettel eating Alma in FEAR 3: Its a cut piece of plot for FEAR 1. If you are interested, use DragonUnpacker to listen to the voice files for FEAR1. It contains ALL voice files for original FEAR1 script, where you have no idea who the replicas are at first, where you get to know that replicas are in fact clones as the gameplay progresses, Jankowski is not killed right away and stays for a while actually, Fettel kills Harlan and tells you he wants to find Alma to consume her for power. It also has a lot of replica chatter to give you a perspective of what the gameplay would have been like. Maybe you know that already, but, if you could make a video to sum it all up for the audience - it would be great.

FEAR 3 had the best horde mode that I ever played - In fact, some of the multiplayer modes, were genuinely pretty original, though they could've used a sequel to polish them. The whole game having campaign co-op with two characters that play very differently was really cool as well. The gunplay was fun-as-hell too, and how you can increase your power by completing challenges (which is necessary to enjoy the horde mode because it does get incredibly challenging by the end of any of them) really helps give you a sense of progression...

It's bad for a FEAR game, but it's decent for a shooter. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking whatsoever, but it's fun for almost its entire playthrough. Such a shame that FEAR was so mismanaged as a franchise. If they had followed a sort of "monster of the week" formula with each game, I think we'd have a compelling series. Just imagine, the Pointman and company taking on missions all across the US taking on different supernatural occurrences. Vampires, Sasquatch, Demons, etc. Instead we just got a progressively more bland Alma.

Absolutely. While I think it would have been better if they followed up on Extraction Point's ending, if they insisted on ignoring the expansions, then the next best thing would have to dich Armacham and the replicas, and have Pointman and friends battle all kinds of supernatural baddies across the USA with maybe the mystery of his origins, Alma and/or Paxton's ghost as recurring elements.

Same experience; FEAR 2 was disappointment after FEAR 1, but FEAR 3, despite its flaws, actually delivered something new.

The co-op was fun. Especially if you're playing with some who you're competitive with. I loved playing "Fucking Run" with my younger brother.

21:14 War for Cybertron had a pretty good Horde mode...

A "retroactive pullout"?! That may be the greatest concept I've ever heard

playing as fettel is honestly fun. As others say it's not a great F.E.A.R game but a great game by itself Especially on co-op if you wanna play with a friend.

It really grinds my gears that the only way to play the best F.E.A.R. game (F.E.A.R. 1) is by buying ALL OF THEM! See for yourself store.steampowered.com/app/21090/ But you can buy it alone on GOG so that's good.

I actually forgot that there is FEAR 3

Really does feel like one of those "this game isn't bad but it's a bad game for this series" like how Doom 3 isn't a bad game but it's not a very good Doom game, since it's such a large tonal shift. And I agree with the zombies hot take, that's a big reason why the kids never appealed to me it just got boring shooting more and more spongey zombies

Fear 3 isn’t a bad game IMO, it’s just not a really a fear game

I am replaying this on Steam right now! Great to see this! I remember playing this game back in middle school on the Xbox 360 and I believe on that cloud gaming service (I FORGOT THE NAME!) but I would play online with my buddy!!! Personally, I love the game. Another note: BF3 on PS3 was so limiting me and that same buddy upgraded to actually gaming PC just for BF3 :D The rest is history. Thanks for the videos man

I know this game (probably deservedly) gets hate from Fear fans and is considered a bad game compared to the original. But man I put hours into Fear 3 when it launched. The multiplayer modes were inventive, the co-op campaign had so much replayability and the horde mode was addictive as hell. Maybe not a very faithful sequel and definitely loses a lot of the horror elements but I can't help but have fond memories of playing this one. Also regarding Pointman still being a silent protagonist I have a vague memory of it being mentioned that he was a mute (due or as part of the experimentation that turned him into a super soldier) though if it is true its definitely not mentioned in game.

I played it coop when it launched with my brother, had a blast, you must be the first one to understand me. Fettel is a bit OP though but playing as him is so much more fun than pointman. Even in FEAR 1 the story always felt a bit like a SciFi channel movie so I don't really care for it.

Wonder how much better it would have been if it was singleplayer focused. You go Point Man only and you get to unlock the Fettel only mode after you beat the campaign

Jarek, I recommend you watch the FEAR franchise retrospective series by KZbinr "Whitelight". He's an amazing KZbinr and you would enjoy his content. Considering you two are really similar, though he goes so more in depth since he's got a longer video release schedule, not bashing you that's just how it is because of the difference in deadlines.

I watch whitelight, I like his content. I would argue I'm a lot more in depth about gameplay and combat because that's what I actually care to talk about. It's the first priority for me. He's a lot more in depth about story and narratives and what not. Gives a good look at all angles between us.

Not the worst game out there, but a huge fall from the original. Less F.E.A.R. and more Call of Duty. It would be nice to see the series get rebooted. If DOOM and Wolfenstein can do it, why can't F.E.A.R.?

I made another post regarding the game overall, mostly from a gameplay perspective, but here's from the perspective of 'where the horror is in the game', and I'll just say this: Consider the game from the enemies' perspective. I don't think the game was supposed to be scary to the player this time around - I think it was more designed as you and Fettel (spelling?) just go through and mercilessly decimate all of the opposition. For some reason, I could not find the exact quote, but there was a DOOM developer of one of the more recent games (I think) that said 'DOOM isn't a game about you being stuck in hell with a bunch of demons - It's a game about a bunch of demons being stuck in hell with you'. I think that's where they went with this, and where the 'horror element' can be found - I also think it's reflected in the sound design as you can hear a lot of the panic and banter as the enemy gets chaotically dismantled. But, that's an alternate perspective, and one that I've really never heard anyone echo...

Hey Jarek, thanks for doing these thorough analyses of the F.E.A.R. series. Decided to get the whole collection on Steam during the sale for $10.99 now to finally try them out (even the not-so-good parts you recommended against playing). Appreciate what you do man!
