This is an _excellent_ video essay. Horror has always been one of my favourite genres - particularly as a vehicle for the grief. You spoke beautifully about it - thank you.

I’m stunned this video doesn’t have hundreds of thousands of views. This is great analysis and connections. This was incredible

Grief is the horror of your whole life being ripped apart rather than your body. Suffering that can virtually never be taken away which to me is the worst kind of horror

Great video. Spoilers for hereditary ahead!!! I've said to people that the "worst" part of Hereditary, in terms of how the film makes you feel strongly, is not the awful demonic events that unfold, but Charlie's death and Peter's numbness, his blank stare, the awful feeling the viewer gets when they see his face and think, "What do you do? What would I do? Everything is so horrible." The blank stare that's mirrored at the end of the film when Peter's body is inhabited by the demon, and he ascends into the treehouse to witness more horrifying strangeness. At this point of the film, the viewer feels blank, listless, empty... Just like its characters have felt since the grief event.

The only thing I didn't like about the film was the dialogue at the ending i felt like the pitch silence would have been more effective

Hereditary is the movie where I was scared from the beginning point. When I watched it, I would look at the timetags again and again. When Charlie died I was just as dead stunned as Peter was and that scene where there were no dramatic sounds but behind Peter his mother was on the wall, I covered my face out of fear after God knows how long. That was really effing scary.

Do you have a link to the video of yours you mentioned in this? About how Horror saved you? I’d really love to watch that one but can’t find it!

Toni Collete is a legend 🙌 Hereditary's real horror is passive masculinity at the face of real emotional work :) Throughout the movie, we are watching the son experiencing everything, processing nothing. He maintains an emptiness, a stasis, to be occupied by Paimon at the end. His ogling of his classmate, his smoking, his absence after the death of his sister. His only out was his mother, and she is overwhelmed and refuses to take care of herself. Her husband is avoidance personified. His solution for dealing with his wife's mother is avoidance. He practically teaches his son to avoid real emotions, letting his wife stew with all the grief and guilt. It is horrifying because it is commentary by description. The wife with trauma feel personal responsibility for grief. The husband lets her take the guilt, so that they can live in their bubble.

If you're watching it with that perspective, Wounds is a great companion piece.
