Patreon Movie of the Month - Short Term 12, is about a counselor at a center for at risk teens. Grace, a caring and empathetic leader, struggles to be strong for the people she loves as her forgotten past catches up to her. As her brave persona begins to crumble she's left spiraling out of control. In this video I'll be looking at the characters. Discussing how this film uses empathy as a way of developing it's story. After all, characters make stories.

This film is everything to me. It delivers the most vulnerable and sensitive topics with brutal honesty without it feeling contrived or forced. The way the characters portray their struggles; they're not actors playing the characters, they _are_ the characters. Both Grace and Jayden's struggles with abusive fathers always hits a deep soft spot for me since I also grew up with an abusive father. This movie drags you through the darkest depths of the lows and pain of abuse and abandonment and pulls you through to the other side. It's incredible. Sorry this comment was so long, it just means a lot to me. I've stayed at a youth center for behavioral health and now, as an adult, want to work at the same place I went to because the staff there made all the difference in my recovery.

One of the greatest peices of cinema ever made. You're Want/Need distinction in the characters was well articulated and added a new layer of depth for me. Great video.

I think this movie goes a step further than empathy into the realm of compassion.

WELL... DONE. There's nothing else to say really. Well other than that I love this film so much. And I love what director Destin said which is "making this film made me into a more positive person" which I would agree it did the same with me. Definitely rewatching soon.

Great analysis :) Short term 12 is one my favourite films for how much story and emotion it has packed within 1.5 hours, made more intimate by the fact that it is filmed mostly in a single location. Whiplash is a very different movie. It is not an example of empathy. To the opposite it explores human ego and individualism in a way that is still relatable - a story of human resilience against the void of disconnection.

i don't think there is a movie on this earth that can make me cry like short term 12 does. thank you for articulating what makes it so special. it's rare to see movies about center around character's empathy because it's a passive emotion, hard to portray on screen in a particularly interesting way, but short term 12 nailed it. imagine what our world would look like if we could all love each other and protect each other a bit better.

Thank you for this. This film has been at the top of my list for a while but on a rewatch yesterday I got so much more out of it. Since the last time I saw it I've opened up about my past. I've realized I have a lot in common with Grace. Thank you again this is really well done. Much love, hope you are healthy, happy, and safe 😊

I don't know what to make of everyone talking about empaths nowadays... I don't feel validated in thinking I am one. Some people seem to be of the opinion that it's sort of a made up idea, but I know that watching strangers suffer can just break me down. One of the hardest examples is criminals, I get totally overwhelmed and sometimes seriously angry at how we treat people who have made mistakes. Ugh. I hate it, I truly hate it.
