Do the rules require you to move the piece that you touched when it was not your move? If so, since your opponent knows your next move, they can play an unrelated move that results in heavy material loss or mate threat that you cannot now address because you are forced to play the pre-designated move.
@privatevendetta
@privatevendetta Жыл бұрын
No. It does require to play the piece you touch during your move. Which Sam did. You can adjust your own pieces by saying j'adoube. Which you can do during your opponents turn but usually you wait until your turn.
@houseofleaves126
@houseofleaves126 Жыл бұрын
He moved his piece after his opponent moved but before his opponent pressed the clock. Perhaps this is somewhat a grey area in the rules. At the end of the day, it’s up to the arbiter to make the decision.
@houseofleaves126

Also, it was his move and he touched the king to put it back in its original square, so this surely counts as touching it on his move.
@eljanrimsa5843

@@houseofleaves126 That's not a grey area in the rules. If you touch your piece with the intention to move it, you have to move it. But, also your observation is not correct. Have a look at 2:15. Hovhannisyan is about to press the clock. Shankland has not yet touched his piece.

No. FIDE Laws of Chess, Article 8.1 says otherwise: "A player may reply to his opponent’s move before recording it, if he so wishes. He must record his previous move before making another." So you don't have to write it _immediately_ after the opponent moves is the point. For example, say I am playing Black in a classical game, and White opens 1. e4. I am then allowed to blitz out 1... e5 without recording "1. e4". However, once the opponent responds with 2. Nf3, I am not allowed to play 2... Nc6 without recording "1. e4 e5". In practice, I and other players typically do this when I am low on time and there is an obvious move, such as a recapture or an only move, so as to get a bonus of 29-30 seconds instead of 25 seconds. It can absolutely make all the difference.
@bobing1752
@bobing1752 Жыл бұрын
No you can play your move before writing down your opponent's move. The rule is that your previous move must be written down before you play your move. Also, the rule which states that players don't have to write down their moves is usually for little to no increment time controles like Norway Chess. But official FIDE times controles are with 30s increment which is enough to write a move and play one, therefore there is almost never such a rule which allows you to stop writing down your move.

Bro "flagging" litterally comes from OTB chess, since old mecanical clocks used flags which would fall when you run out of time (hence the expression "to flag" for running out of time). So "real life flagging" is just flagging. Anyways, I don't see what this has to do with flagging

Maybe we need to relax this rule. The rule saying that you need to move the piece you touched. My argument is that, the rules force you to move the piece you touched but they also allow that if you made your move without tapping on the clock, you are free to change your move with the piece you touched. You cannot change the piece, but you can change the square it moved. That's also absurd to me. If you allow it, then you can also allow touching on pieces. In this case, the only definition of the move is to hit the clock. Before then, anythings goes. Hitting the clock is the no turning back point.

@@Osigot Yes but there is also the reality of time trouble which forces players to move quickly since they are given less and less time even in classical time format. How often do we see 120 minutes for 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and 30 moves + increment for the rest of the game time control? Only in candidates and wcc matches.
@yildiraykomurcu
@yildiraykomurcu Жыл бұрын
@@CapAnson12345 Common sense should not be violated in any case giving freedom to players to touch every piece before they finally make their move. I am not talking about that. It would be quite disturbing. With the current rules, a player can indeed touch a piece and not move it if it is clear to both players and there is absolutely no ambiguity that it is done to correct the position of a piece in a square. That can be done. So I think touch rule can also be relaxed to minimize losses that is not the evaluation of the position.
