I'm a professional opera singer. My friend ‪@coacheugeneteo‬ put me on the spot to get my reaction on Pushit by Tool. I had never heard the song before. It turned into a deep analysis on TOOL and Maynard James Keenan and what makes them so great.

Maynard (particularly in Tool) tends to think of his voice more as another instrument in the band and that is reflected in the strange emphasis in his words. But its also what makes the song melt with emotion imo. Also, I have listened to this song at least 1000 times since 1996 and even to this day when he goes into the bridge "When I say I might fade like a sigh" still makes my hair stand up.

i love how this is reflected in the slow dissolving of maynard into the background at a tool show. early on he was a front man, with front man costumes and antics. but every tour, he would enhance certain things and slowly reduce his visual impact on a show. now you have to look to find him.

I've been a Tool fan for years, but suddenly I'm thinking....People roll their eyes at Tool now sometimes because the fans are known for being obnoxious, but decades from now when all the band members are gone, Tool will probably be known as one of the great legendary classic bands and be appreciated even more.

Your observation is spot on, young lady. I have been a fan of Menard's work for years. Unique, lovely, inspiring, and painfully direct (for some), their music pulls deeply rooted strings in a human being and shakes them like nothing else. Investigating the meaning and inspiration for each song will open new doors as a new fan.

Maynard is an interesting person and artist because even after 30 years of enjoying the music he makes, I still can't confidently say the stage performance is the artist reacting to the music or if it is all thought out and executed for maximum effect. He is a very honest and sarcastic and feminine and masculine and tough and soft person.
@Egoblivion
@Egoblivion Жыл бұрын
He has this weird way of moving that’s imo just overflowing talent with body-control and expression. To my knowledge, he’s never just danced in a “normal” way, but what’s funny is i think he would be a fantastic traditional dancer. He _has_ to “avoid the cliché” with every move and knows that if he lets himself be vulnerable and feels this thing we call music in an improvisatory way, actually reacting to it then it will be successful. So he looks “awkward” like that because he just has this thing for it and Tool’s music just amplifies it.

Great reaction, and I’m here for your Tool journey! Don’t worry about the pausing…Tool fans have heard these songs thousands of times and have probably watched tons of reactions, so they are here for your genuine and professional(as a singer) opinion. Maynard doesn’t consider himself a lead singer, he sees himself as another instrument in the band…a band which seems to have a lead drummer, a lead guitarist and a lead bassist, depending on the track. Can’t wait for to hear the breath control on The Grudge, which your friend eluded to, and for you to see the octopus Danny Carey in action on Pneuma…but as most will tell you, they don’t have a bad song, and each one is a different journey. Have fun spiraling out🌀!

Most of the tabla in the track is Danny triggering sounds off the various pads on his kit. The part at 16:10 is one of the special moments where Danny's tabla instructor Aloke Dutta joined them on stage and the two are playing together.

What I love is that you didn't just focus on Maynard, but also appreciate the other members of the band. It's pretty common to hear people laud Danny's drumming, but Adams guitar and Justin's bass just so seamlessly blend together. The entire musical experience is a mastery. The complexity that Tool puts into their music, yet still producing something beautiful is pretty rare in the rock/metal world. It's more something I'd expect from classical music.

Pushit is a song that explores the theme of being pushed to the edge by a toxic relationship. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone who is struggling with their own inner demons and trying to find a way to cope with the pain and anger that they feel towards their partner. The song also reflects on the idea of redemption and forgiveness, as the speaker wants to make things right and heal the wounds that they have inflicted on each other. There are different interpretations of what the song means, and I think that’s part of its beauty. Some people think that the song is about Maynard James Keenan’s childhood abuse and how he dealt with it as an adult. Others think that the song is about drug addiction and how it affects one’s mental state and relationships. Some even think that the song is about meditation and finding inner peace. I think that the song can mean different things to different people, depending on their own experiences and emotions. I think that’s what makes Tool such a great band, because they create songs that are not only musically amazing, but also lyrically profound and meaningful. They challenge their listeners to think deeply and critically about themselves and the world around them.

The song(s) Maynard doesn't particularly like to do much. 10,000 Days &Wings for Marie. They go together as 1. Judith Marie Keenan was his mother. 10,000 days is how long she lived from her paralyzing aneurysm til death. ...it's painfully beautiful

Also, check out some Puscifer. It’s a whole different side of Maynard. And A Perfect Circle, yet another side. Maynard doesn’t add his part to the song until the instrumental portions are done.

Totally agree, there's something about this version that just hijacks my body and tears start coming out of my eyes as this like autonomic response. It's always a surreal experience.

Great review! Your emotion and banter is awesome. Tool always brings out the musical geniuses and you guys are spot on analyzing these guys. Keep it going. (only criticism - I hate hard edits. Let the conversation go on. We'll watch an hour long episode!)

Tool triggers that ancestor DNA when we used to do these chants before huge battles and before hunting our food. Our society today with supermarkets forgot what these chants gave us spiritually and tool unlocks that DNA that thousands of years ago was built for surviving.

I hope you guys check out the live 1995 performance of their led zepplin cover of "no quarter" in 1995 or 1998 ( i think). Maynard's live performance is amazing on both. Also, you get it with the live performances. I'd love to see her reaction to thom yorke of radiohead with some of his live performances from live from the basement. Then again, I see that Cristina did a cover to a Jeff Buckley song, which means I have no doubt that shes already familiar with radiohead and their work. Either way, I loved seeing your reaction!

@@cristinamrusso Then I think you've already seen and familiar with everything they do. Have you checked out some of Thom Yorke's solo projects or other bands ? If so, then you already know! aside from that, its fun seeing you react to Tool. I can't wait to see you react to other Tool tracks, A Perfect Circle, Deftones, soundgraden, and other artists of the various rock genres and other genres. so many artists and genres, so little time, but the fun is seeing you react to the range of styles. Looking forward to more!

@@cristinamrusso No problem Cristina. I forgot to mention another thing about to Tool. Some songs need to be played together to tell the full story such as Parabol - Parabola and Lost Keys - Rosetta Stoned. It looks like you have a great guide who will know this anyway. Looking forward to the next one. 🙂
