GREAT reaction Cristina! I love the isolated vocal analysis...yes, Maynard has a deep 'tool'box (sorry, just had to) of vocal colours at his disposal - and he uses it so effectively! Indeed please continue down this rabbit hole - you will not be disappointed! Danny Carey is known as The Octopus for a reason - his limb independence is unparalleled, as is his penchant for polyrhythms! One of my favourite drummers. From the same album as this, Right In Two is an incredible track (with deep meaning!), others to check: Stinkfist, Aenema, Pneuma, Lateralus (pay attention to the vocal rhythm - it uses the Fibonaocci sequence), Parabol/Parabola, 7empest, Forty Six & 2....this will keep you going for a while! Great reaction! Someone probably already said this in one of the comments of your Tool reaction videos but in case no one did: Maynard always writes his lyrics when the other three band members have finished the song. So he "sculptures" the lyrics and his singing/ performance style around the foundation the others give him (if that makes sense). That's also why most songs have a difference in the vocal style and performances aswell. On top of that his voice is actually treated like the fourth instrument which could be another reason for why he sounds a bit different in almost every song.

Someone has likely already pointed this out, but in case they didn't... Maynard comes in with his parts last. The rest of the band writes, does the arrangements and then records it. Once the tracking is done, they give it to Maynard and he writes his melodies and lyrics. So when you pointed out how the arrangement really emphasizes the "the whole world dies" section - you're right. But it was entirely Maynard that chose to hammer the lyrics that way. Their system works really, really well 😁
@justbrowsing52792 ай бұрын
Right on man. I hate hearing all the "when Maynard was writing the album" nonsense. He writes his parts, and they are brilliant. But It's a huge part of the story to note that the music is written first. It does service to both the rest of the band, and to Maynard for coming up with vocals and lyrics that fit the music so perfectly.

Awesome video yet again! I especially liked the isolated vocals and hearing your take on them. It’s the things like that make it clear that you put a lot of effort into these videos, and don’t just only listen to a song and make simple commentary, which of course is highly appreciated! I don’t know if you missed it (which is easy to do when it comes to tool with all the things going on all the time) but the shredding guitar sound that starts at 11:27 isn’t a guitar at all, but instead it’s Justin Chancellor going absolutely mental with his bass! Just a small thing that you might want to consider in the future is to film yourself in either 30fps or 60fps instead of doing 25fps or 50fps. Almost all videos on KZbin are in 30fps or 60fps, and using something other than that will cause sync issues with the overlay video and make it look a bit odd. But as I said earlier, it’s just a small technical thing that doesn’t detract all that much from your video in the end. But all in all, awesome video and I can’t wait to see more from you in the future!

tool is a band that believes words get in the way. album lyrics before fear innoculum were not available for months even years after each respective release. this is similar to why maynard as vocalist takes a step back from being your typical "frontman". they are fractal in their intentionality ...it is meant to reiterate a few things: active listening (as opposed to passive listening - i refer ppl to robert fripp for all that) and adage "the map is not the territory" (which is "there is no spoon" robert anton wilson talk). use the words (if need be) to get yourself to where you need to be in order to forget the words ...bc the real !@#$ is in the music, not lyrics. they will admit that, they have admitted that. i'll give a pass on skipping music video aspect on first listen ...but lyrics were never part of the "first listen" experience tool specifically meant to cultivate. there are message boards dedicated to "what did he say?" leaving things open to interpretation, and introspection. listener is therefor inherently more engaged. remember, context over content always. "question authority" of mind, of words, of everything you (ego) think you know, "watch things die"... esp lyrics. "try and read between the lines", "move between the sounds" ..."to the spaces betwixt" (these are all tool lyrics). if you get caught up on lyrics, you're overlooking the music, and before long you're counting syllables and "never thought to question why".
