Tbf, he was instantaneously hostile beforehand which would prime the brain to think negatively, and in fact, the truth was worse than they thought, nope, Tyrian wasn't working with a corrupt organisation bent on humanity's endless slavery to their delusional visions of grandeur as the superior race, instead he's a loyal psychotic servant to a creature who wants nothing but destruction to the entirety of the world. So in fact, they were giving him the benefit of doubt. Also, Ren being surprised instead signals to me that he's more surprised if a Faunus would be hostile towards them rather than a human, which is a fair assumption since the only villains they've encountered so far that aren't WhiteFang, are humans.

It might go against rwby lore of Faunus only having one animal trait, but I think Tyrian’s sporadic expressions and movement in the fight because of him sensing vibrations like a scorpion, when he looks away mid fight he could be sensing vibrations of someone’s weapon coming close. Would explain why he just let Qrow gingerly walk over to his weapon and only attack when sensed it shift.

I think I remember hearing a theory that Tyrian can sense the Aura people put in their weapons and because he was sensing Aura in weapons, he wasn't expecting to get punched in the face.

My favorite take on the whole fistfight sequence to this day is still the "Tyrian is probably based on a type of scorpion that doesn't actually see but rather feels/hears his environment, which is why once the metal blade is gone he has trouble simply perceiving Qrow. Which is also why he immediately steps back in the moment Qrow touches his blade." but sadly it's never properly delved into so god knows why they did that

This, basically. RT has been pretty good about how they utilize faunas, in terms of their behavior/fighting/traits as it relates to the animal they are referencing. It would be perfectly in line with their handling... And not telling us in some way is perfectly in line with how RT had started treating the fan base.

Not really. They got haxxored not via internet (sorry, CCTnet), but by directly inserting a scroll in the computer(s), which had malware from a former top atlesian specialist, who was a part of the team that made those systems in the first place. At least as far as I remember, haven't watched it in a long time.

I remember being iffy on the engine change but when this fight came I was hooked. Tyrian’s acrobatic and erratic style was so creative and unique for the series combined with the way he incorporated his Faunus traits is something I wanted to see a lot more from characters. If there is one criticism I could make, it’s selling the weight of some of the blows. I get Tyrian is really strong but sometimes it looks he enchanted his weapons and limbs with knock back, since otherwise light looking hits send characters flying like ragdolls

I always saw Qrow punching Tyrian as being comedic. I couldn't help but laugh at seeing Tyrian be in visible pain from a sucker punch. I also liked the goofy smile on Tyrian's face as he blocks Ruby's shots. This fight is also a good example of Ruby and her friends being clearly outclassed by an opponent that is reasonably stronger than they are, rather than our heroes being nerfed for the sake of tension.

I think it was also meant to be comedic, given how Qrow visibly pauses and shrugs before punching Tyrian. But the fact that so many people didn't see it as funny or as a joke is proof enough to show that it was a badly executed moment.

In the most popular upload of Tyrian v Crow, there was a really in depth fan-theory about how Tyrian has a “Hidden” or “Passive” Faunus trait that makes it so he senses vibrations in the air better than seeing things. Metal makes a lot of vibrations, which is why he’s so good at evading and countering, even when he can’t see it directly. By contrast, when being attacked by someone’s fist and only their fist, it’s a lot more… blurry, from his perspective. Which is why the punches made him seem so helpless, and why he attacked only when Qrow bothered picking up his weapon again. People rule this out because of the “One Faunus trait” thing, but tbh I consider that to be for an actual, physically functional bodypart, like the tail or Blake’s ears. Because they’ve shown other similarities to their animal parts before, like with Blake stereotypically enjoying fish because she’s part cat. Idk, just seems more interesting to me 🤷🏽‍♂️

Say what you will about Tyrian's insanity being a cover for whenever he does something strange, but this fight was one of the better post Monty ones. Though I was surprised that Ren and Nora didn't join Ruby in firing from a distance and Tyrian's strange interest in Jaune which is never brought up again.

Not insanity, more like him feeling superior (and he's right) and mocking his opponents. Tyrian's interest in Jaune could be a never implemented setup for Jaune having unusually strong aura (after all Cinder easily got info on all Beacon students with her haxxoring.. and presumably on all students that participated in the tournament) and/or his relatives maybe. Imagine if somehow Salem could corrupt Jaune and use on her side, he'd be a support for her already very powerful fighters.

22:58 The perfect time to bring this up In the earlier Volumes and a long time after, I always thought that there were some people you didn't have semblances. Charcaters like Jaune, Rin, Ironwood, Torchick, ect had never displayed having a semblance making me thing that not everyone had one. If that was the case, then Ruby both not knowing and not asking what Qrow's semblance was would work because of the assumption that not all great Huntsmen had powers.

I interpreted this fight as tyrian being somewhat blind because he reacts more to sound than visuals when targets are a certain distance from him. I think that's why he's standing there after the punch, he's trying to figure out exactly where crow is because he's calmly walking and not making noise

There was a comment on the fight that highlights Tyrian being part scorpion, thusly probs having poo poo vision and relying on sound. A fist going through the air makes way less sound than a giant metal death weapon. Also Tyrian smiling happens directly after Qrow touches his sword, which I take to mean he’s happy he can sense where Qrow is now

Is no one going to talk about how Tyrian being able to block bullets with his tail made of flesh. yet still being vulnerable to a blade which is using the same amount of momentum as the bullets from earlier. Like….does no one see how that’s a logical inconsistency? Normally I’d say “anime” shrug and move on, but they literally set the rules of the fight and then broke them. 😅

If I had to guess - a combination of aura and him positioning a tail in a way so that the bullet hits it at an angle, therefore changing the trajectory slightly so it won't hit Tyrian's body. Ren blocked the fangs of King Taijitu with his bare hands by concentrating his aura in them (and this skill was never brought up ever again, which is infuriatingly dumb, but is a very common RT practice).

If I were to personally change one thing, it would be the tail reveal. I know this is shown as he himself is revealed episodes prior but they could have perhaps hidden it until now. I think he should have handled RNJR just as himself, his flexibility and skills, but when Qrow enters he whips that tail out so to say "this guy is actually a challenge and I will need my Faunus poison to help" and I think it would also show the stakes of "oh shit, someone going to get poisoned in this fight" later than intended.

I'm not taking credit for this because I didn't discover it. But a lot of fans say, it's implied that Tyrian is nearly blind, and he might see through aura. Because Scorpions are 80% blind apparently, he doesn't seem to see the punch coming and only reacts when he hears Qrow's weapon activating. But I don't know, he seems like he can see a lot throughout this fight, so who knows

i should mention that tyrian, being a scorpion, has horrible eyesight but can sense movement and vibrations. It explains a lot of things about the fight like why tyrian just stops after nora gets shot or why a fist which doesn't vibrate much (it is flesh after all) connects (tyrian has no depth perception). Go to the yt vid of the fight and im pretty sure there is comment there explaining in more depth

Tyrian is one of my favourite characters of the entire series, and I'm glad you did this analysis. My favourite part about an otherwise bland volume, it's such a fun fight to watch. Also, I like to picture Qrow moving over past the fragile beam on top of the house that Tyrian lands on and crashes through as him abusing his semblance in a way that can actually help him. Just makes that part a little more cool.

I loved this breakdown of the fight. And its rather interesting to hear your comments about the lack of action by those not actively trying to hit each other. I'm only finding this after writing this fight for my own fanfic where I mixed things up to make it unique. Little things like having a moment where Nora fires a grenade at Tyrian but he manages to catch and redirect it at Qrow who then uses the tip of his sword to smoothly catch and throw the grenade high. Tyrian got smacked by Nora's hammer into a house and the grenade falls through the hole in the roof, ending with Tyrian commenting "Ha, what are the odds?". The fight went on a fair bit after that but it's things like that that I used to make it my own.

I've seen people comment on the fact Tyrian may possibly have bad eyesight like an actual scorpian, relying on sounds and vibrations which would explain why he wasn't fighting back when Qrow started punching the shit out of him. If that were the case, it doesn't make sense that Tyrian took away Qrow's weapon which basically is giving himself a handicap especially when he wasn't completely overwhelmed by Qrow :V

This is also one of my favorite fights but i think my problem/nitpik with it is different than most. Its mainly about Qrow. Am I the only one that doesnt like Qrow's semblance? I love it in concept, but what luck means is so undefined I feel like you could say "oh, tyrian got punched because qrow turned up the bad luck and it made him get distracted longer" "It affected the air so ruby's shots missed" etc. They dont need to sit down and baby explain it like they do later with ruby's, but I think i feel like its so vague you can say its the cause of everything bad past this point, or its so useless it barely contributed.

One of my favorite bits in this fight is when Qrow loses Harbinger and just punches Tyrian in the face. Yeah it breaks the flow and there’s no way Tyrian would get hit by such a cheap shot but I still like. Also this was when Tyrian was still a poetic madman sure he was as over the top and hammy as he is later but after this he becomes just crazy. Hitting Nora with a lightning dust round was smart sadly it’s never used again, it would be nice if they approached like Killua from Hunter X Hunter who carries a taser with him in case he needs to recharge himself. Whenever they try and have Ruby something serious or sound “angry” it comes off as hilarious due to how stupidly high her voice is. It’s like the dog from Up. Tyrian, Neo and Mercury are some of my favorite characters when it comes to fighting styles, I like when a character uses more of their body in a fight rather then relying on an over the top weapon or attack.

In regards to spinning to block bullets, there is a great scene in Devil May Cry 3 where Vergil does exactly that to explain how bullets won't work on him in the actual fight, but the presentation is great. To summarize really sloppily, the scene begins with Dante shooting a number of bullets at Vergil, who effortlessly defends himself with a spin of his katana. He then sets the tip of the sword to the ground and lines up all 5 bullets he caught in a perfect line, which he then launches back at Dante with the back of his blade. It was a great showcase to demonstrate the inhuman level both combatants are at throughout the entire cutscene.

One of the best fights the show has to offer. It's just like you said, the first half is a lot of fun with Tyrian fending off all of JNPR, and the choreography and camerawork of the second half vs Qrow is damn near perfect. Good breakdown!

Makes sense that she wouldn’t always have a hand on it if she’s spinning it around. 7:20 Shimmer! 7:55 Pretty sure Tyrian is ether triple jointed or a contortionist in his spare time. 11:01 Tyrian is clearly the master of the mid air pirouette. 13:11 Tyrian’s outfit does leave allot to be desired, even if it’s supposed to be minimalist. Also I think having a crest on him would help allot. I don’t think Tyrian and Hazel actually have a symbol unlike Cinder, Mercury, Emerald, Neo, and the other villains. 14:00 I do agree that having Jaune, Ren, and Nora just sit here doing nothing is just dumb. I know it’s supposed to be before Qrow’s big entrance and all, but they could hand tried to get to Ruby to help, or the classic “No!” Shout. 17:16 Again, I feel like this is supposed to be just Qrow spinning his weapon like Ruby. But the real problem is a long pole weapon like Crescent Rose is Easter to be believable in spinning around. Unlike Qrow’s Single blade big sword. 18:22 Ruby using the scythe as extra way to stabilize her shots would work. The twirl to get it there, is just a waist of time. 23:16 While Tyrian’s tail does give an added element to this fight, it’s kinda weird how it tanks so much damage just to get cut off at the end. It blocks Nora’s hammer, Ruby’s bullets, other attacks too. Was that supposed to be because he ran out of Aura? It’s kinda unclear. I do agree it would have been better if the other members joined in the fight more. And there are some laggy bits, but over all this is a really good fight.

My prevailing theory is that people with aura can tell when someone else does. Yang has been demonstrating this from the start, firing directly at some while only using the recoil against others; and of course, Ruby brought it up with Penny. As someone with an aura-related semblance, I suspect Tyrian found Jaune interesting because he could tell the boy had yet to unlock his semblance... which is why I'm worried about Mercury... As for the fight itself, frankly, it feels like Monty's work. I wouldn't be surprised if this had already been planned out. Not sure if the brief bout of fisticuffs was in the original plan, though. Apparently, Tyrian has no idea how to counter unarmed combat, which they obviously play into later, in Mantle. We know nothing of his training, assuming there was any; perhaps he's been spending too much of his time killing armed huntspeople? But yeah, even if they were going to do that, it should've been faster. Qrow should've dashed to his weapon, Tyrian should've been on him when he got there. Another theory of mine regarding Remnant's culture: during the great war, when they had to stop fighting each other whenever the grimm arrived, rules of conduct regarding combat were developed; perhaps not in any official capacity, but still agreed to, in order to prevent attracting more grimm than necessary, if not for the sake of simply being a good sport. It's why Yang lets the second twin limp away - presumably because her aura's down - and it's why Ghira etc. doesn't attack the twins while they're trapped by Blake's ice clone. So if a professional hunstman tells the kids to back off, they back off. Chibi suggests Yang knows what Qrow's semblance is, why wouldn't Ruby? Because he specifically doesn't want her to... Or maybe it's all just lazy writing. And there are other examples of poor communication between writers and animators. I think Lindsay confused canon Ruby voice with chibi Ruby voice.

Honestly i love this fight the most because i love Qrows characters and i HATE how much they dethroned him as the parental figure with leagues of combat experience over the main cast. This fight showed his speed, his ways to using his weapon and the whole throwing his blade to land on it with his feet to stop his moment is just *cheifs kiss*. But unfurtunatly during the fight for the relics next season he has his moments and after he kicks the bottle he just becomes this background character who no longer performs like the mercinery fighter he is...They focused to much of his character development for this but i never felt like he got the recognition he deserved ever for all hes done for everyone. Instead he is toned down as to allow RWBY to be the star impactful fighters and while we do get to have the moments of him bonding with the Ace ops commander, i feel like Qrow should have been on par with him already... it was still a nice dinamic to see Qrow whos the bad ass fighter you wouldnt expect to lose finally meet someone whos better than him and who is adult enough to respect this person to learn from him, like he said to Yang and Ruby in season 2 where he says "And dont think because you graduated you stop learning, every week out there is worth a year in here"... This was nice but i still hate how it seems like they dumbed him down to achieve this...and dont get me started on Ironwood and his watered down performances.

In a post-Torchwick world, Tyrian became my favorite villain the second I laid eyes on him. This fight cemented his place in my top 5 characters for the series!

I never minded Tyrian pausing during his fight with RNJR cause he's so much better than them they're not a threat in the slightest and he doesn't know about Qrow I think. Though yeah that bit where everything stops during his fight with Qrow is dumb I understand we need a breather during a fight but we get that when Qrow gets pulled into the shack. So it feels unnecessary on top of dumb. But yeah this whole fight is a highlight of the show and gave me hope the fights would stay good... Instead of Having to wait an entire Volume for another decent one lol.

Why would she know their semblances? Ozoin is the secretive headmaster who she has had only a few one on one conversations with, Ren is just a friend of a friend who she has never spoken to or spent any time with.

You know what I wanna see? I want a very knowledgeable Huntsman that *has not fought beside RWBY before* demonstrate their observational skills by masterfully *inserting* themselves in between RWBY's attacks (or whatever team we're following/is featured) because they get a feel for how they fight and what they do, pulling off team attacks that weren't intended to be anything but the character attacking solo. Maybe the current POV team isn't really gelling or working together particularly well at the moment, that's why they're more or less attacking out of sync or one at a time. I think it would be nice to just see a very advanced Huntsman demonstrate the core idea of being good at working with others. The Ace Ops showed both that you have to occasionally work with those that aren't necessarily your school buddies, but also that you do need to at least attempt to care about them and work *with* them, from a Moral Of The Story type place.

13:06 I watched a retrospective on the butchered White Fang arc by Unicorn of War (Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWaXlHiio8SWrcU) recently and someone in the comments section pointed this out Ruby committed racial profiling. She saw a Fanus trying to kill her and though oh he must be a White Fang member literally the same thing the show calls Weiss out for as a bad thing. Combine this and amputating his animal trait we sure Weiss was the one that needed to learn to be better.

Good analysis buy you did miss the entire point of Tyrian kneeling down and then the reaction shot, for some dumb reason Tyrian knew he didn't stand a chance against unarmed Qrow (don't ask why) so he was waiting for him to try pulling out his sword to catch him off guard, which backfires on Tyrian with Qrow instead taking him offguard with the scythe morph.

@@IamEscBoy Yup, volume 6. They wanted Ruby to shoot into Cordo's mech's cannon, and Ruby said she had to "practically be looking down her barrel" to get the shot. So Ruby, with a Sniper Rifle, got onto a moving plane and got closer to the target, and the blade of her scythe was hanging out of the plane so she was just holding the whole thing steady with just her arms.

This is easily one of my favorite fights in the series. No questions asked. It would be my favorite, but the Volume 1 finale fight’s choreography with Torchwick Vs Sun and Blake, and the Volume 3 Ruby Vs Neo and Torchwick fights will forever cake the take for me. There’s also some other fights I like a bit more, now that I think about it, but this is still easily top 10 for me. I really liked the way you broke it down.

16:20 this is honestly my only gripe about the fight when I watched it originally, I felt like the bullets lingered on screen just a little to long, but otherwise, this whole fight was amazing for the most part, definitely the highlight of volume 4, and much better then anything volume 5 delivered.

I like see Nora and ren trying to work together to bad we never see that again in rwby I wish Ren got new guns or something caz they don't do much in fights Jaune shield dose more then his guns and why didn't Ren have lighting dust for Nora his friend he's been with for years and was probably there when she got her semblance and who he's been on a team with for about a year at this point I believe when volume 4 is going on or ice dust to help him trap grim or people he fights Why does Tyrion have the same weapon as vernal?

They don't really have the same weapon. Vernals are not mounted to her wrists and she can throw them, they act like boomerangs, and they fire lasers.

honestly I feel like Ren's weapon dont really go that well with him, my most memorable moment of him was when he didnt had a weapon in hands, but RWBY kinda stopped being about weapons and more story and magic focused so I dont think they're gonna change his weapon now :/

Tyrian breaking ruby's aura is still one of the most visceral blows in ghe show to me, like YIKES that looks like it hurt bad Edit: also I know its stupid and breaks the fights pace but its very funny that qrow gets disarmed and just goes "wait i have hands" 2nd edit: also those flashes should be used to accentuate movements and attacks not hide them because they cant make them look impactful

I always did wonder why Tyrian finds Jaune so interesting. It's not like Jaune was ever in the forefront at Beacon, and Tyrian was only told about Ruby not him. Is it his sword and shield? Did he somehow recognize it as a relic from the War in Remnant? I WANT ANSWERS AND WE'LL NEVER GET 'EM

The 'slow' parts of the fights would be better scented if characters traded blows more instead of blocking/avoiding everything. Like with Qrow and Tyrian. Tyrian could have been weakened before the punch and that caused him to be slower. And then at the end too. It would make more sense and show how characters actually adapt. Too many fights just end with 1 final blow.

As someone who writes a lot of his own fights, do you think that fight scenes in general should have as little dialogue as possible? Scenes like Neo vs. Smith or the Darth Maul fight in Phantom Menace keep the talking to an absolute minimum, and they're well-regarded. Or is it like a ''less is more" mindset?

I think dialogue can add to a fight, but oftentimes the "dialogue" is more told through their actions. Especially if it's a visual medium.

Or how Qrow vs. Winter is essentially them having a conversation too. It's one of my literary goals to figure out how to do that myself with writing instead of animation.

i remember when i started into rwby (sort of again) and i always remember this fight which makes sense its most definitely the best of the volume and for the very most part the show despite the fact its very clunky at parts but the good was ale to outway it. i was expecting more from tyrian and the fights from the show to get better later on...sucks that neither happen to me mainly tyrian (i want my scorpion boy back already) :(
