Macro trends blogger and economist David Woo @DavidWooUnbound, CEO of David Woo Unbound, a global forum devoted to the promotion of fact-based debates about markets, politics, and economics, joins Julia La Roche on episode 145 for a wide-ranging conversation on economics and politics.
In this episode, Woo shares his macro framework, emphasizing the intersection of economics, politics, and geopolitics and the need to understand their impact on market outcomes. Woo also explores the potential risks and challenges facing the US economy, including political instability and polarization.
Woo, the former head of Global Interest Rates, Foreign Exchange, Emerging Markets Fixed Income Strategy & Economics Research at Bank of America, is known for some of his bold and contrarian calls, including Trump winning the presidential race in 2016 (www.cnbc.com/2016/12/08/bofam..., and that the 2020 US presidential election would be much closer than expected and the results contested (www.afr.com/policy/economy/th.... With the increased political polarization in the U.S., Woo sees a real pressure point once we enter the third quarter.
“Once we get into July, we're four months away from the election, I think it's going to feel like shit. I think America, Americans are going to be petrified about what is going to be in store for the country in the final four months leading up to the election,” Woo said, adding that when safeguards to the system get “seriously stress tested” it will be “a huge economic headwind” to households and companies.
Elsewhere, he shares contrarian investment views and highlights the importance of facts and numbers in public discourse. Finally, Woo discusses his work with David Woo Unbound and the mission to bring diverse perspectives together for meaningful discussions.

The founders understood that pure Democracy's have always self destruct after a short period of time once 51% figure out they can plunder anyone they can marginalize. That is why the founders gave us a Constitutional Republic where The US Constitution is the highest authority and societal contract into which various powers are defined and invested by the people. There have always been those inside and outside who are not happy with the rule of law and have worked so destroy our society and Constitution. We need to hold fast to what our founders gave us and be very careful in our thinking and speech. This is a long game and we have wins and losses. We live in a world that we create by how we live. Stats back up both of these. Do you know how to verify the info you see? As for inflation, most of it we now know was "greedflation," where companies just took advantage of Covid supply chain issues and jacked up prices and kept them up because, well, they could.

Well, the USA has among the lowest inflation rates of any developed country in the world today. That is just a fact. Plus the USA has probably the strongest economic performance on many different measures, of any developed country in the world today. Higher GDP growth, more jobs created, manufacturing and chips job created, wage growth higher than inflation, and on and on and on. So the question really is .... why the disconnect on "don't feel good about the economy" drumbeat, when the facts and reality show that the USA has done better than virtually any other developed country in the world today. Isn't the real issue the ever growing wealth and income inequality in the USA .. that has only significantly increased since the 1960's to today. For example in the 1960's the average CEO compensation was about 8x the average wage. Today it is something like 400x the average wage. Today the 50 wealthiest americans control more income and wealth than the bottom 50% of the entire american population combined. Today corporate america pays proportionally far less income tax (and often zero income tax) than they did in 1960. In short there are reasons why the average american is "economically struggling" today vs. say 1960. And the primary reason for that is an absurd federal income tax system that is broken and totally dysfunctional in comparison to that of the 1960's. Such is the primary reason why the rich have gotten richer and the poor have gotten poorer. And that absurdity can largely be laid at the feet of the republican party ,and their never ending drive to minimize taxes on the wealthy and corporate america. The truth is that the USA federal income tax system could be relatively easily "fixed" to address wealth and income inequality. Which, over time, would have significant benefits to average americans. However such will probably never happen simply because the primary beneficiaries of an absurd and broken tax system are the wealthy, corporate america, and politicians themselves. As such they will fight to the death any rational overhaul of the federal tax system.

As a citizen of South Africa, we’re not anti-American. We’re anti-colonialism, anti-war, anti-genocide. The global south is not trying to "get even" according to his ultra-simplistic opinion, we’re trying to forge our own economic path where we are not subject to the threat of sanctions, tariffs, vetoes, blockades or regime change by much more powerful economies like the US. Financially and economically, we all know about the wisdom of diversifiction in our investment and retirement portfolios, not putting all our eggs in one basket. This is what the global south is doing on a much bigger macro economic scale. It doesn’t mean we don’t want to trade with you or have nothing to do with you. On the contrary. We just do not want to be bullied and intimidated (militarily, economically, politically and any other way) to do your bidding by putting side our morality and supporting your empire-building actions. Why is that so bad ? Why is that seen as ‘tantamount to a declaration of war’ ??? The US loves to spout a lot of BS about human rights, freedom and democracy while denying us the very same. Go figure.

Your humility and willingness to unlearn much of the propaganda & and indoctrination that informed your past worldview is the essence of wisdom. Knowledge & experience help foster wisdom, but real knowledge is guided by that hard-won wisdom - it’s 2 very different educations. I can relate to the familial divide and liberal education has been tearing families apart for years. But the current mendacity, illiberalism and subversive agenda of education today is identical to the Maoist Cultural Revolution generally, and “reeducation” of Hitler Youth more specifically. It’s a true blessing to discover the majesty of crafting an authentic world view later in life - it’s the antidote to getting old, it promotes neuroplasticity & purposes IMO

@@kangkim150 this is a misnomer. It’s been the trend during our conscious lives, which include the recent past of our parents and grandparents. You can say people typically turn toward tradition as they age but that’s not the same thing at all - that’s equivocation. In fact, most of the first half of the 20th C saw older populations turn less conservative. From Teddy Roosevelt adding anti-trust populist policies to FDR’s new deal and progressive era (which few if any would call conservative). Economic policies moved suddenly and sharply left for many older Americans. Moreover, generation Z is the most conservative generation, at its age, than any generation in at least a century. I would agree that it tends to be pattern within a larger cultural and socio-political trend longer than any lifespan - maybe be something like the 80ish year cycles in the 4th turning or the way historiography classifies eras. You statement is really only applies to the modern American era, 1945 to today. That era wanes and its fading fast. We’ve entered a brand new era - a time of great tumult. We can choose how well we deal with it. America poorly managed its “unipolar moment” (mostly because it misunderstood it). America became captured by a nascent and far gentler political religion; and political religions were precisely what we battled in Germany, Japan and Soviet Union. In 1991 we were the last one standing and suddenly our elites shape shifted into pure political cultists pushing a messianic Gnosticism, practiced and revealed through their own mendacity, self-dealing, perpetual war and crony monopolistic capitalism-ish. They hallowed out the US & emptied its coffers, left its greatest resource in despair & set the world ablaze. Global advancements occurred despite them. They accelerated the end of an era, and now, here we are today.

The founders developed the constitution, at least in part, based on the Roman republic. If you look at how the republic broke down it ended after constant wars so that a minority elite could profit off of a lower class of fighters. This led to constant political chaos and civil wars. We're headed in that direction. Not an exact parallel but history doesn't repeat but it rhymes. I can only imagine more political chaos and eventually civil infighting.

The vulnerable nature of the Roman Legions seemed to demonstrate more about how that Empire lost power. They need to display a credible threat to enable Tribute Payments to flow to Rome. Now as the appearance of NATO weapons being scarce, due to no actual visible threats, the G-7 need to display some form of threat that seems ruthless. Israel appears to be accommodating that desire. But an Economist who overlooks the BRICS Group seems to be unaware of World Events? Since the New Development Bank announced their loan program in 2014, inflation began to Balloon..... The ability to control the supplies of resources that arrive at US Ports, seems to need Tribute Payment like the Romans were asking for..... The US Investor Class appears to want Russian Assets, but they are unable ti buy Majority Investor Status to control that source. So the plan appears to be focused on overcoming Russia. after $150 billion flows to Kyiv with no return on investment, that plan seems to be a flop? The US Currency also ppears to have lost all support, Israel is driving former investors away from buying Treasury Paper. Most of the Middle East appears to be ready to ignore Washington, as they benefit from joining BRICS. My casual estimate of the resources available from the Trading Partners of the BRICS Association, as around 70% of all available resources. That appears to leave the G-7 with a small amount. Minerals, Energy, and development money now seems to be within the BRICS Wall. This could be a bad year for the G-7 Nations. The USA may be in the worst position.

Er, no. First of all, the Roman Republic lasted for 482 years. We, the United States of America, would be doing very well if we lasted that long. Second, the Roman Republic did degenerate into an oligarchy, no longer really a representative republic, and as a result, out of that, one oligarch took control of a chunk of the Roman Army, earned their personal allegiance to him by leading them on a gɛnocidal campaign against the Gauls that also made them all vastly wealthy by seizing the many gold mines of the Gauls (that was the real reason for Caesar to wage war against the Gauls), and then he went and marched on Rome and easily conquered what was left of the Roman Oligarchy. Yes, and Julius Caesar was subsequently assassinated, but the Civil War that followed was between the leaders of the remaining oligarchs and their private armies, and out of that the Roman Empire was born, which was a semi-dysfunctional state controlled by whoever could seize control of enough of the Army to declare himself Emperor. It was really a government by military dictatorship. We are still a long way away from any one man being able to seize control of enough of the armed forces of the United States to launch a military coupe on the government and try to overthrow it. Trump tried, but his amateurish followers didn't really come that close on Jan. And the US military has historically been kept strictly apolitical and also fragmented and separated. So, if this ever did happen, I would suspect the U.S. would quickly break up into multiple regions that would have their own military and leadership, choosing to resist this one man trying to do a military dictatorship.

I think centralization and government growth started the death of the empire. Then, bread and circuses strategies by politicians decayed both the government and the citizens and the economy. I’d be interested in how the elite could have used wars to gain power when it seems to me those wars were an expense to the elites who gained favor by paying for them. And of course, as Rome fell, the wars got more and more defensive, not expansionist.

@@nunyabidness3075 The USA Empire that was purchased from the Spanish in 1898, appears to have provided Commodities to US Brokers at a price they determined. The US Empire appears to now face the fact that the former Colonies are trading within the BRICS Organization. The BRICS Trade Union appears to drive the cost to the G-7 Nations up as it provides added benefits to those Nations who now appear to get a fair trade for their Goods. BRICS Trade Associates now appear to hold about 70% of available resources. The G-7 Nations now are faced with the prospect of paying more for the products they used to be able to set the price for. They appear to be spending all their spare change on weapons to overcome the BRICS Guys, as the situation seems to erode their support for the Fiat Currency they count on to continue. They are facing a future with less manufacturing resources, as their Currency loses value. The G-7 is beginning to look like Wiemar Germany between wars..... That was what created the desire for some Hitler like politicians to offer answers. Hitler was given a harsh lesson by Stalin.

Really?? Not sure why you like this guy, David, since he essentially spouts generalities and unsupported opinions based on no factual support whatsoever. Try listening to Robert Reich who provides reams of data and facts to support whatever points or conclusions he is trying to make. Reich runs circles around David from any objective and factual viewpoint. Since David is a self proclaimed quantitative and numbers guy ... maybe he should provide a data driven factual comparison of Biden vs. Chump on multiple different measures. Show the facts and reality ... pros and cons. I personally have no doubt that whatsoever that such a factual comparison would show Chump and the GOP in extremely unfavorable light. The most recent presidential historians ratings just came out. They rank US president on about 20 different categories of performance and accomplishments. It includes hundreds of presidential historians including republicans, independents, and democrats. And after all, presidential historians spend their whole lives and careers studying, anlalyzing, and writing about presidents. So their knowledge is far superior to most other people. According to the latest presidential historians rankings, Chump is dead last as the worst president in US history. Biden is ranked well above average in comparison to past US presidents. Personally I will give a lot more credibility to the presidential historians than to a talking head like David who provides almost nothing in terms of facts, comparisons, or substance.

I just look at which big blue chip companies are doing well and then I look at the macro economics and the government spending. Last year I was spread between Microsoft, Amazon and Lockheed Martin and a chunk in bitcoin. I made 45% last year and I have just held pat for the first quarter of this year. Mr. Woo, the main reason that oil prices remain elevated is because the Saudis are holding back production by 1 million barrels of oil per day; all the other factors are minor compared to that. At any moment, the Saudis could flood the market with oil, just like they did in 2014. They're supporting the price for multiple reasons.

Click bait. That's 47mins of my life I don't get back. This man doesn't know what he's talking about. And no, we're already in election year and he's not able to predict the election. So your title is BS and used to make the KZbin algorithm work for the creator of this video. One of the many things the dinosaur being interviewed doesn't get. At min 36:35 he mentions that "what the world wants is for him to say basically that Israel is committing genocide and that Zelensky is crazy", he doesn't realize that that is not what the world wants, it's what the owners of KZbin want. It seems that if you don't have some controversial title on your videos or a title that spreads fear then your videos are not going to be suggested to viewers. Via the algorithms we are being manipulated and he hasn't caught on, yet he thinks he understands the state of mind of people. That's not what all of us want. In fact, I watch a lot less videos because I'm getting really tired of videos like the one here where the title implies a different topic from what the video delivers. David Woo is not a smart person and he hasn't yet realized that he doesn't know what is going on. This was boring and a waste of time.

Actually, there are fewer anti-American and anti-Western activists, but they make the most noise on social media. There are far more pro-American, pro-Western, pro-liberty supporters, but they vote with their feet and are largely silent on social media. One discovers this when traveling internationally.

Is that an admission about a poor education system. Or simply an inability to understand among the Patriots?

@@danielhutchinson6604 It's a recognition regarding willful ignorance vs. evident realities. If one believes in the dominance of anti-Americanism, then one must explain global migration and immigration patterns that strongly favor the West and the US in particular. There's an obvious contradiction between "I hate the West" and "But I want to be the West." I would attribute the ignorance to cultural degeneration in the modernist West that has become an indulgence that most of the world's populations can't afford, with the exceptions of their own elites.

@@MichaelHarrington17 Sorry but I began to study Economics in 1970 before the US adopted the Fiat Currency. I have done business in the North American Continent for 50 years. I notice that The US Currency has no visible support. The US now has positioned Troops all across the Planet that are too expensive to support, to threaten Nations and take resources. The combination of those two effects are what we assumed Americans were not stupid enough to accept, when the concept of Fiat Currency was assured was going to recieve the undying support of the US Treasury. You can tell me about people flocking to the USA to get the share of the Pie that seemed to come from the Nation they arrived from. I will tell you that Americans do not have some standard of living that those Refugees seek. Close to 65% of American Citizens do not get paid enough to afford their rent and Food. Consumer Debt is over $17 trillion due to credit Cards being available for all who ask for them It may be true that Bankers will offer to finance the debts of this Nation, the process could pay for their Great Grandchildren to attend a Nice College. Reality demands we question the Government. I ask Congressmen and Governors what they assume the results of US extravagance is going to cost as the Trillion dollar Interest payments add up every year? You tell me people are coming to America because we are just a good place, I tell you your Road Apple Content is excessive.
