Dooku was the perfect Jedi. Isolated, almost no family, sure of himself, precise, powerful, able to think on his feet, courteous, and without strong emotional attachments to anyone or anything. Really, his issue wasn't that he "fell" to the Dark Side; it was that if he never did, he might have wound up in the exact same place.

Something I constantly think about, due to my studies into Buddhism, was that it believed that attachments themselves are the cause of suffering. But while in Buddhism it is a reason to enjoy life and be kind with the knowledge that you, your loved ones, and your good life may all end in an instant (at least under the way I came to follow its philosophy), I couldn't help but think what happens when someone does, indeed, completely lack any attachments and desires, to the point he even sees living beings as assets. Enough to cause their suffering under either an extremely Utilitarian philosophy, or even a psychopathic state-of-mind. The Jedi school of belief, out-of-canon, is heavily inspired by it, and... well, their dogmatism to PRACTICE, and not belief and concern for mental health, seems to constantly cause Jedi to fall from grace. Anakin is the perfect example of someone being told to bury their emotions, until his emotions buried him. But Dooku... his separation from everyone, and noble intentions, ultimately turned him into a villain. Different paths, all ending into the same place. (Of note, this is why I love the Old Republic era. The Jedi Good / Sith Bad dichotomy is deconstructed, played with, and analyzed in the context of philosophy, to the point of showing how flawed both philosophies turned out to become as time passed... and why Revan sought to fix that.)

@@pmsdgy1325 Not power. It was his desire to control. He thought it was his place for force his peace on everyone else. Power hungry individuals are like Darth Malgus. Brutal, heavy handed, unempathetic to savagery. Dooku wasn't that. He was as a Jedi empathetic to a idealistic fault. When he became a Sith those ideals which were originally and in a messed up way based on empathy told him to sacrifice himself for the greater good. He even empathized with Anakin and Yoda. Yoda he empathized and got a glimpse of what a dark side Yoda would turn into, which terrified him. Anakin he empathized with Anakin demons which drew him close to Sidious plans, though he never made that connection. You can see the fearful empathy finally on his face when under Anakin two sabres he gave that final plea/look. That's not someone who desires power to me. That's someone driven too far by feeling too much empathy while being intelligent. (Sidious also played on his ideals and empathy by keeping Dooku busy with the task and promising him falsehoods)

Not a perfect jedi. A perfect version of what the jedi had become in relation to the times. Dooku was always concentrating on how his ego (perception of himself as an individual entity within an infinite universe) was right in terms of the historical purpose of the jedi. Dooku was right in many ways but would never release his ego to the force. He couldn’t connect with the light side fully cuz that actually means letting go of his certainty of his importance. Hence palpatine swoops in and assures him of that importance.

As cool as Maul is, I think the prequels would have been better without him and just having Dooku from start to finish. It would also be more impactful if he killed Qui-Gon since it would be just like Vader killing Obi-Wan.

It was interesting the way they detailed dooku's lightsaber. It was curved because when you trained a fight with swords you don't so much look at the sword as you do the arms and hands of the wielder. It's slight angle throws you off

The style Dooku used to form 2 (Makashi), it was an older form out of favor with the Jedi and the time which made it stand out. The focus was lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat, it was not needed as much during Dookus time with the Jedi.

It's so strange Star wars parody in an alternative universe that is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life and there's six of them. Eventually you'll get the DJ dooku but I highly recommend you take the time to watch them because they're just so great I can't wait for the next trilogy. @@keltsuneNot necessarily. A Sith who had a strong personal moral code could be a powerful force for Good, in the narrow interpretation of the Good they do serve. Imagine a Sith dedicated to ending slavery for example. If he was strong enough in his convictions, he wouldn't give in, wouldn't take the easy way. The problem is Sith ideology is about breaking restrictions and overcoming barriers to fulfilling your desires. Eventually your selfish desire will be tested against your morals...and for most Sith, those simply become another set of barriers to break through. You free the slaves and become a tyrant, making slaves of the people you defeated. It is very easy to go from gaining power as a means to an end, to gaining power being the end itself.

Many writers for EU material misinterpreted how the Force works and made it so that those that use the Dark Side have a bit more control and can potentially do "good" things whilst also being under the influence of the Dark Side. But that totally defeats the purpose that the Dark Side was supposed to serve in the eyes of George Lucas. Knights of the Old Republic is one of the only sources of EU material that I can currently think of that closely adheres to the rules of the Force that GL has laid out clearly. ____________________________ The "Light Side" is *enlightenment.* Not a "other side," but the totality of becoming one with all of life. Jedi strengthen their connection to the Force by being calm and focusing one's mind on meditation and existing in the present. By calming one's mind to reach inner peace, a Force-sensitive can become zen, spreading their attachment to all of life and thereby become more capable in their use of the Force. The core of the Jedi philosophy is that using the Force negatively leads to the widespread destruction and oppression of all of life. Which is why those that use the Dark Side become a shadow of their former selves. I know this hurts many people's ideas of living out their fantasies of being a Sith Lord, but it's just the way she goes. Also, don't conflate real-world philosophies and dichotomies with how the Force should work (like many people do when I try to explain these concepts to them), because the Force does not exist in our reality, so it's literally impossible to do so. Yes, the creation of the Force was heavily inspired by real-world philosophies and dichotomies, but that's where the similarities end.

Since he didn't want another loved one to die in his arms plus his children would've died with her so he didn't want to take that risk. Anakin did change the galaxy with this choice and suffered the consequences for almost 2 decades.

What exactly are the flaws in the Jedi? They aren’t politicians and have no formal ability to affect republic policy. They quite wisely decided that a fascist Sith empire shouldn’t be allowed to return. And despite studying their “culture” potentially being very useful, they probably noticed that the Sith axiomatically always fall into infighting and betrayal and that not matter the gains that could be made from studying their tenets it would inevitably cause decay and anarchy, the ultimate evil.

Dooku had sith eyes in a few scenes in the clone wars animated series, the not canon reason why he didn't has them is because Christopher Lee didn't want to wear yellow lenses in canon it is explained - Dooku uses dark side like a tool to reach what he wants not like a way of life like Sidious or Maul so his eyes turn yellow only when he go full dark side mode he did it a few times in that show

In Attack of the clones, he has a look of sadness when he talks about Quigon, when Obiwan and Windu refuse to join him, and when he cuts off Anakin's arm. I don't believe he is actually cold and emotionless but that it is just a mask he wears.

I agree. They took time to show his facial expressions which give off the impression that he doesn't like what he has to do but he does it. He actually has conviction towards his beliefs rather than a blind ignorance to a certain order, of which we see with many of the Jedi and Sith. Dooku is probably the most complex character, as far as Star Wars baddies go, and Tales of the Jedi shows this nicely, but even there, Dooku is far too willing to step over into cartoonishly evil action. I wish there had been a bit more subtlety to his evil side, both in Tales of the Jedi and in the other Star Wars media we see him in. I kinda wish he was more likeable throughout, instead of only likeable when he's being charming. An aura of "I wish I didn't have to do this" would work better than "Screw it, I'm just gonna turn evil".

Meanwhile he's sure of himself when he's about to kill the tyrant senator. When he's gonna kill the Senator, there's the goal of removing his boot from the necks of the farmers. When he kills Yaddle, its basically just cover up the tracks of all the shit he's done at Palpatine's behest.

They took what could have been a great villain that made the heroes question their position in the universe, and made him a Saturday morning cartoon villain instead. They could have . . . you know . . . have him raise some fair points that niggle at Anakin and he may find stuff he agrees with Dooku on. Make Obi-Wan question the Jedi Order and the Republic, but ultimately have him disagree and defend them with more tenacity in a great character moment. But no, we got an evil psychopath with no higher goals (it seems) than power in that show. To end this mini-rant, I will just say that while I do not hate the Clone Wars (2008), I do think it has quite a few problems. Dooku being one of them. I still like it though.

Dooku is my favorite Sith Lord. Always has been. It started just bcz of Christopher Lee's performance when I was a kid but as I grew up & got into it I realized how dope he was. What about where his castle was, the rain that was falling if you didn't have the right ship Landing there would cause your ship to crash and be destroyed because of the strong acid rain his Temple was made out of the same armor as the amandalorian armor to keep it from being destroyed and there was a bunch of other stuff in that way about it that was so amazing and made him out to be even a greater character. I absolutely love the Karen Travis book where she details what was found in his castle as well as the things he had there about the Sith in the Jedi lore.

The most underrated SW villian. Also - Cristopher Lee was the only SW cast actor who actively practiced Real life sword combat, and literally were a war veteran. When Brit Queen granted him knighthood, she knew that this time - it wasn't just a fancy title (looking at u Elton John) His fencing style the most awesome bc: 1) it looks very elegant. 2) it closest to what a real saber/rapier fencing looks like

That's probably the saddest part about Dooku, insofar as you can pity him. He was much more of a Dark Jedi than a Sith. He embraced the dark side but kept his Jedi ideology. When Palpatine betrayed him he was completely, utterly surprised. He couldn't even understand. Why would his master, his friend for years, betray him? Because he's far more "ends justify the means" than most Sith, whereas most Sith are purely in it for selfish power, or in Vader's case self hatred, though I think he is a unique case. He has a code, as bastardized as it is. I think he truly believed he and Palpatine could make the Republic better, and their plot to kill millions would eventually work out in the end. Because in a way he was right, the Jedi had fallen, they had become tools of the Senate and glorified thugs for them. Their entry into the clone wars proved him right on this. However he had fallen so far that he didn't realize he had become the prime enforcer of the most corrupt thug of the entire senate in Palpatine.

I like that he's one of the few actors Lucas actually listened to on set when he disagreed with something Lucas planned. Originally in RotS Dooku was supposed to beg for his life and Lee said that would be completely out of character for Dooku to do, Lucas changed the scene to mirror what Lee thought would work better, which is why Dooku looks shocked and stunned but doesn't grovel.

It's a classic case of using the ends to justify the means, but inevitably that view leads to more and more extreme methods until anything is justified and the original goal has become almost unrecognizable. Dooku certainly had the wealth, charisma and influence to do that, but if he had, I think he'd have been seen as a threat to remove by Sidious to his own plans. The best chance Tyranus had was in the middle of the Clone Wars, he knew all the Republic programs, secrets and codes due to the proxy nature of the war. Revealing Sidious and forcing him to implement Order 66 early would devastate the Jedi, divide the Republic into factions between the Senate, Chancellor, Jedi and Military and undermine his Master-possibly even leading to his death if Yoda and Windu both confronted Sidious, then he could assassinate the heads of the Megacorporations and have Grievous run the war effort without restraining him. In a single stroke the main sources of corruption in the galaxy would be removed and the majority of the power placed into his hands. Since we know cloning and Essence Transfer exist in both Legends and Canon, he could even procure a younger body during this time and take Ventress fully as his apprentice.

On a semi-related note, I like how the Episode 3 novelization talks about how the darkness expands in unpredictable ways. Because of Dooku sneaking into the vaults to look at Sith secrets, the Jedi Council put heavy restrictions on who could enter the archives, meaning Anakin would have to become a Jedi Master if he wanted to see those secrets himself in his quest to save Padme. So Dooku unwittingly helped sew a few of the seeds that would aid Anakin’s fall, even before he himself fell.

The "grandson" plot point is akin to lineage in certain martial arts. Some of the titles basically boil down to Martial Father, and Brothers. It would not surprise me if this is not a familial but also a lineage line of thought

I can vouch for this. In Okinawan karate at least, students of a given school are listed in "generations" starting from the founder to the founder's direct students (1st generation), those student's students (2nd generation) and so on. And a great deal of emphasis is placed upon being in lower numbered generations as those who are closer to the source are more likely (but not always) closer to the source of the emphasis and ideology of what the founder intended. In my case, I'm a 3rd Generation student of my school (me > my sensei > his sensei > founder) and though some of my interpretations of technique are different than what my style's founder may have used personally, I tend to be much more grounded in the principles and concepts than someone who is several generations further down the line but with similar time spent training. This is reinforced in by what I have been told by the first generation students of my style (rather modern style formalized in 1959 by the founder in Okinawa) who say that I have come to different conclusions based on my own experiences and preferred focus (namely developing counter tactics so I can be better equipped to face a someone trained in modern MMA that is the most common/popular martial arts discipline today plus having done MMA myself when away from my dojo due to life situations taking me away from my dojo for some years), but the principles are sound and are not in contradiction of what the founder intended. Basically, a new flavor of what we do but still rooted in what we were trained in.

Dooku is probably my favorite Star Wars character ever. I've thought a lot about his backstory and everything we saw in the movies. Ever since I saw that scene in Clone Wars with Dooku Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan I couldn't help but imagine them forming a new Jedi order. Not necessarily a grey jedi order, but one that truly enacted upon the values of a jedi as opposed to the politics centric order that existed at the the time of the prequels.

It’s interesting how Dooku never truly saw himself as evil. Sith like Palpatine or Nihilus didn’t try to hide their evil; they delighted in it. Dooku became what he was because he saw how corrupt the Jedi were. He recognized the flaws in the Republic, and seeing no way to fix it outside of all-out war, he helped Palpatine orchestrate the Clone War. He was an increasingly misguided idealist, allowing himself to be brought down to the level of those he despised so much. It’s a shame that this path was inevitable for his character

Seeing the vision Yoda had where Dookuu was still around & Qui Gon was still alive makes me really sad. If Dooku hadn't turned & Qui Gon not died I think he would have gotten very familiar with Obi Wan & Anakin. I also think he would have been the only Jedi Master (bar Qui Gon) who would see the Chosen One as both a PERSON and an opportunity to set the problems of the galaxy straight rather than just an object or tool (like the council did). One of the things I like about Dookuu is a trait shared with many of my other favorite villains: the thought of "what if this character never became an antagonist & how much better would things in the world/galaxy/universe/multiverse be if they were to apply themselves properly rather than problematically?" Darth Malgus is a somewhat similar case, except he was always a Sith & very much kept the Sith ideals after he rebelled, but he turned against the EMPIRE that needed to be taken down, not the Sith doctrine. If he saw and admitted to the corruption & hypocracy of those using both the dark and the light, but started as a Jedi, the Sith would sh*t themselves.

Grievous is an interesting case because while he's one of the "Big 3" of prequel villains, he's more like a living plot device/monster. However, he does serve a very important part in the story of star wars, distracting Obi-Wan so that Anakin is left to his own flawed judgement. Grievous' motives are the simplest of the Star Wars villains, which he's said himself, is that the only thing he lives for is to see Jedi suffer.

It’s also interesting to see the various interpretations of dooku’s before and after his turn to the dark side. Books such as the episode three novelization or dooku jedi lost tend to paint dooku as an ego maniac whose darker tendencies were always at the forefront. Meanwhile tales of the Jedi and Plagueis present him as more conflicted in that he truly believes he’s doing the right thing but as we see in the clone wars series he has truly succumbed to the dark side by the end.

Its great they visulized his background and jedi time a bit more in Tales of the Jedi showing the idealistic Dooku slowly falling into darkness through the dogmatic council and the corrupt senate. something only novels so far showed about his complex grey shades - while in the PT and CW he was already more potrayed as the elegant diplomatic sithlord who doesnt hesitate to use ruthless cruel methods to archieve his goals.

A compelling character and a legendary actor make a perfect combination. Count Dooku is one of the most spectacular characters in Star Wars. The first thing I did after getting Disney + was watch the three episodes of Tales of the Jedi featuring him. That was 45 minutes marvelously spent!

Francis Dolarhyde From Hannibal or the red dragon novel. Dolarhyde had the distinction of being both the most physically dangerous and sympathetic villain in the Hannibal lecter universe. He is a very strong from years of weightlifting, has combat training from several years in the army( he is a capable marksman in all stories with the character and adept in combat with a knife or his hands.) he endured years of neglect from his birth mother and years of abuse from his grandmother, he was bullied his whole childhood for his cleft palet to the point he can’t believe anyone but a blind woman could love him. While a ruthless and unrepentant murderer of men women and children ( also engaging in necrophilia with the women’s corpses) he is so moved by Reba showing him genuine love that he tried to stop killing. He failed but even after becoming enraged at her he refused to kill her and faked his own death.another interesting point of the character is that while no Hannibal, he is quite intelligent and eluded police for months, only slipping up when he tried ate a painting to stop killing.( he managed to get away from the building but that were the clues start working against him.) he even used his love of Reba to a strategic advantage, faking suicide so he could get revenge of Graham. Dolarhyde was cunning, a skilled fighter, and a surprisingly sympathetic man, who was turned into a monster through decades of cruelty.

Sir Christopher Lee was notoriously perfectionistic and hard on himself, to the point where he pretty much died from workaholism. You can see that intense dedication in Dooku's character as well. Take away the evil and you have a lot of similarities.

Also one of the best interpretations of Dooku as this revolutionary with more too him is in the Republic comics. Quinlan Vos almost fell due to a combination of Dooku’s skilled manipulation and genuine charisma. We actually see how Dooku inspires fanatical loyalty amongst his supporters like Sora Bulq and Tol Skorr. Great story

I always love the way Dooku acts as a sort of foil to Anakin. While Anakin falls to the dark side for entirely selfish reasons: his own fear, lust for power, and desire to save his loved ones, Dooku falls to the dark side for entirely selfless (albeit arrogant) reasons: he believes the Jedi are failing to fulfill their obligations and are out of touch with the present state of the galaxy, and Dooku decides he has to be the one to change that for everyone’s sake. Both Dooku and Anakin show the way power can corrupt for different reasons.

He's like the Star Wars version of Sauron, to Palpatine's Morgoth. While Palpatine is the ultimate evil, who desires nothing but dominion over the universe regardless of its benefit or order, Dooku desires order and sculpture-like conformity, to organize all things that he considers lesser than himself. A bit ironic, considering that Christopher Lee played both Saruman and Dooku, that he'd resemble Sauron in a vague sense.

Also, one has to hand it to Dooku, again. The level of control and precision necessary to control the Dark Side without falling fully into it is most high. His skill as a Force User is one again second only to Yoda and Sidious.

And even then he fought Yoda to a stalemate in lightsaber dueling, while Anakin killed him, and Windu, we never got to see duel him, but due to his ferocity, would’ve been more comparable to dueling Anakin than Obiwan, because Vaapad must allow oneself to enjoy the altercation, which is more borderline darkside than Obiwans style is.

Yeah, and that power and discipline were why Palpatine began manipulating him years before. He knew one day he'd make a good asset. I wonder if Qui Gonn had any nice chats with Palps. How many bombs did the old men set, how many Jedi did he oh so subtly twist, until Anakin blew the roof off of the Jedi order?

I always knew dooku was more interesting then he was allowed to be in the movies. Unfortunately, unlike Maul, I never cared enough to investigate further. Thanks for this. This may be a silly suggestion as I'm not sure there's enough information to warrant it, but perhaps an analyzing evil on Jareth from Labyrinth? Love your work. ✌

Outstanding video. I can fast see myself becoming a starwars nerd by the time I've watched any media you've made related to starwars, I had no idea it was such a nuonced story. Excellent work
