You can not understand this dance without understanding the expressions and postures. Every hand gesture, movement and expression has a defined meaning and are combined to express a story. It takes years to learn them.

Ana: This is traditional TAMILNADU South Indian dance from 1000s of years called *BHA-RA-THA NAA-TI-YAM* Lord Shiva is the LORD OF THE DANCE. Each and every postures (MUDRAS - their hand Gestures) explaining the characteristics of Lord Shiva. Mother Ganges (the holy river of India) flowing thru the heads of Lord Shiva The Snake mudra On their right hand, the percussion called udukkai, by shaking their hand (listen to that sound synchronized with their hand movement) that instrument is played. Each is and every movement is meticulously choreographed, it takes at least 12-15 years to dance at this level. It is so complex, the fingers, the head, the hand, the hip, the body, most importantly the EYES each and everything must be in sync called *ABHI-NAYA* it is not easy at all. YES, IT IS THE TRADIONAL DRESS OF this dance form.

This is classical art of Sanatan Hinduism. Art is scripted by Sage Bharath Muni. Later Tamil Nadu adopted iit as Bharatnatyam, representing Bhagvan shivshankar. So art was there before anything. All Indian classical and folk arts are deprived from Natyashastra only.

This is very much specific to the dance .....the pleats in the middle shows how the saree is designed to spread right in the middle in a very dignified way when you squat down with your knees right angle to the spine .....your arms need to be parallel to the ground without any bend any where without looking wooden. There are other forms of dance like Lavani, kuchipuddi, Bangra, Manipuri, Kathakali, Odissi, Garba, dandia and many more........what you saw is a type of Bharatanatyam ( Tilana).....Indian classical dance in its raw form is fascinating, colourful, vibrant and most importantly should exude grace with flexibility, synchronising with the beats and the vocals.

Sathiratam(சதிராட்டம்) is a fusion of various dance forms of ancient Tamils. This 2000-year-old Sathiratam dance is performed in South Indian temples only by Devadasis, i.e. female servant of god. By the early 19th century Sathiratam was known as Bharatanatyam and Brahmins(non-Devadasis) had begun to practice it commercially. In 1935 Rukmini Devi Arundale first Brahmin woman to dance it publicly and she is the founder of Kalakshetra, the first institution to teach Bharatanatyam.

Traditionally Indians Give most importance to Acting, Lyrics, Emotions, Feelings & Expression in Dance than Moves. Popping & robotic moves etc are at the other end where Moves are given more importance. I believe that Basically what we call as pure hiphop(leg&hands+ expressions) is the central form of dance from which all other forms emerged. This indian traditional Dance is a kind of hiphop...we can say. Greatest form of Dance is where two ends (acting & pure moves) meet in a beautiful way. Nowadays indian dance is becoming Holistic.

But there is this misconception Bollywood as a dance brand or something. That is outrightly a wrong notion. There is this Bharathanatyam from Tamilnadu (South India) Kuchupudi traditional dance from Andhra (South India) Mohiniattam, kathakali traditional dance of kerala (South India) Kathak traditional dance from UP (North India) Bhangra traditional dance from Punjab-Haryana (North India) Each state has its own traditional forms. There are folk dances from each state as well. Bollywood is a *FAKE* mix of some of these traditions and folk forms. It gets so much popularity because of their marketing. All those Super Dancer / India's Best Dance competitions you see are songs from those movies. No performer who is so much into traditional dance could ever win a cup because the judges are from Bollywood too. That is the pity.
