Roln1out G I’ve read Yang’s book, it’s good! It certainly highlights the issues that illustrate how hyper capitalism wrecked smaller communities. However, the stark difference between Yang’s book and Giridharadas’s book is the solutions. Yang’s solution is to put more money in your pocket without changing too much about the systemic issues underlying the problem because he believes people with solve the issue themselves individually. Giridharadas believes structural change in the tax code is needed to prevent plutocrats from controlling our society and the way it functions. One solution offers individual contribution while the other offers structural contribution, and depending on how you view the world and it’s issues, one solution will appeal stronger to you than the other.

After watching this interview, the part of Anand’s argument that Trevor kept asking for clarification or explanation of was the fact that when you file taxes here in America if you make large charitable donations, the government allows you to deduct that amount out of your income. This ends up meaning that if you are a billionaire who has moved his money around so there is very little “income” to be taxed in the first place, then he makes sure his donations are super huge. In many cases this means that billionaires can actually get huge refunds from the government plus they get the good PR for their generous donations. The people who aren’t wealthy don’t realize those donations are actually from the actual tax payers. So our tax system is actually helping the wealthy horde their wealth, while they are able to appear generous and socially aware.
@herb369nichols
@herb369nichols 3 жыл бұрын
No surprise there since it's the wealthy who wrote those tax laws!!
@mallen1317
@mallen1317 3 жыл бұрын
no! this doesn't make sense, you don't 'get huge refunds from gov." for moving money around - if the billionaire has 'little income" they can still give money they want to donate to 'cause of their choosing' instead of trusting gov to do it - many of these people don't even make it known publicly that they give

Also when they make these "huge donations" they are not actually making donations. They stick it in a special funding account that is untaxed. The money can sit in the account for indefinitely, never actually going to the donation recipient. Some of these accounts even accrue interest. They then take the interest out-untaxed, and move them like Anad said so it is not taxable income. So not only, are they making money off of their donations that don't actually get donated, they also don't get taxed of their income.

Trevor's face was growing pale toward the end of the interview. I take it he felt quite uncomfortable and did not know HOW to make light of this serious subject, of which Noah is now much more of the 'problem' than when he was back in Africa. As others have mentioned, he has his own charity in Africa,and I think he personally felt conflicted by Anand's closing arguments. I have not see Noah truly speechless before. But I think his 'bilionaire buddy' comment was the best he could come up with, sort of knee-jerk style. And we all know how close to the truth a bad joke is. He is part of the neo-liberal class. If you trust the dnc and think they're not gop lite, then you should be happy with Noah's take on money and politics. I recommend paying close attention, now the focus is on the most important presidential election we may see in our lifetimes. just my opinion, sorry to carry on. AND it's nice for you to support Noah. Seems like a good guy still . . .but power and money in most cases does eventually corrupt. Few rise above. This is why so many are mentioning a rare stalwart - Jon Stewart.

This was kinda interesting as an interview. Trevor tried to challenge Anands ideas, present opposing oppinions, ultimately getting a more complete picture than if Anand just presents himself from the perspective he chooses. Generally he is an outstanding interviewer and does this sorta thing very well. But here he just couldn't get a word in edgeways or even get him to slow down and discuss his statements. Trevor was completely overpowered by Anands passionate energy. I beleive this also explains his weak final comment about his billionaire firends. Trevor was stunned and possibly also a little frustrated/ annoyed that he didn't get to direct/moderate the interview on his own show.

Trevor would had agreed more with him a few years ago when he was struggling finding comedy gigs everywhere to survive, but now that a one in a million rich person (John Stewart) gave him the opportunity for him to start piling millions in his bank account, his mind is being slowly transformed (unlike John's) but like most people when they become wealthy. The more they get, the more they want. Sometimes whithout them realizing it, greed and selfishness take over their mind and life, looking out only for themselves while the empathy that they once had toward others less fortunate diminish to the point of non existents.

It seems to me what you are saying is rich people are unable to have empathy torwards others, which i strongly disagree with, yes there are rich people who are greedy and selfish but there are those who use the fact that they are at a priviledge to help other, and having those billionaire friends assist them in reaching more people and changing lives of the poor.

Allan Jason Mburu Guys it was a joke. Trevor was just joking when he said “you are right but I’ll keep my billionaire friends”. There was no jokes in the entire interview, so at the end Trevor tried to put a little laughter to end it; that’s all that statement was. A lot of you have forgotten that Trevor is a comedian first and not really an interviewer. You all should get over his “I’ll keep my billionaire friends joke”🤷🏽‍♂️.

@JoeHanson that off color joke was just the cherry on top of a disgusting pie where trevor kept trying making light of a very serious host discussing the very serious topic, literally the defining issue of our age, inequality. A leftist sycophant, following in the footsteps of his democrat financiers, he'd rather keep us engaged on peripheral issues like racism and sexism that really do not disrupt the status quo

@@DownUFO Yeah he basically justified the use of bullets because "rubber ones and tear gas don't work"... he did apologize for it apparently, though that kind of comment is horrendous. If he is sincerely apologetic then that is great. We all say stupid things. What bothers me about Trevor is that he was a Clinton shill in 2016, and he made fun of Bernie; now he's much more favorable to him this time around. I would not go so far to say he is ideologically vacuous, to give him credit he seems to be open-minded, but he does seem to err on the side of democratic socialism at best. I still enjoy watching him. Maybe in the same spirit that is what he meant about the billionaires, I don't know... just liking them as persons but disagreeing with their place in the system.

ramon alfaro Trevor Noah grew up in a middle class family in South Africa. He wasn’t rich or wealthy growing up. He worked very hard to get to where he is. There is nothing wrong with what Trevor is doing. What this guest is talking about is Jeff Bezos working his warehouse staff so hard that they can’t breaks to go to the bathroom. They get 30 minutes for lunch and the barely have time for breaks. Uber classifies every driver as an independent contractor. They get no job protection and no benefits. This is what this guest is referring to.
