Eli, I'm new to this business, and I work as a Server Manager, and I first started with your SNMP video. I have to say, I love the way you articulate your videos. I love how you go into great detail, and overall I appreciate who you are and what you do.

While dated, the video is quite informative. SATA III, which he states "just came out" was ratified as a standard in August 2008, so five years ago now. Even so, a minor nitpick, you have confused PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) with SATA I (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment). PATA is the technical name for what we call IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) which just means the drive has an onboard controller board. Technically all modern hard drives are considered "IDE".

@GameVoidCommentaries Servers are built to be on 24 hours a day for years at a time. You CAN use desktop hardware for a server, but in "real" business you buy higher quality parts for servers...

At 11:00, should that not be, in order, SSI EEB, micro ATX, and mini ITX? And at 40:20, you can pause the POST-screen with the [Pause]-button on the keyboard, resume with [Enter]. You can usually remove the start-up picture with [Tab], and then you can quickly press [Pause].

regardless of the type of server, it's role is to serve and to be reliable. this reliability is achieved, as Eli said, throught the use of quality parts but moreso though built in redundancy. sometimes this redundancy means 2 power supplies and most times it means a RAID disc array(Eli does a great raid vid, search).

21:20 PATA was not the name of the first SATA! PATA (Parallel ATA) was just a new name assigned to the IDE drive technology when the SATA (Serial ATA) drive was released. Also whilst the SATA drives are quoted in Mb/s (megaBITS per second), the PATA / IDE drives, are quoted in MB/s (megaBYTES per second), because they transmit in a parallel fashion. Most common IDE (PATA) drives were rated 100 or 133 megaBytes per second... though 167 MB/s was available.

Yes I did. I also recommended the Apple "geniuses" whom I do not approve. However, with the amount of information given, the person with the problem needs someone to help them in person, and even simple "geniuses" that have basic knowledge of a computer would be of more help than trolls on the internet.

Good explanation of RAM. Users sometimes get confused why they need or need to upgrade two types of memory. They generally think of the hard drive as the memory. The distinction gets muddied up with flash memory which cannot be heard and identified by regular user. The video card does need some RAM to hold the picture, and then some for double or triple buffering to achieve vsync, as well as enough bandwidth to read out the buffer, which matters for highest resolutions.

@GameVoidCommentaries in reality a server is any computer that provides services(data storage, network/internet access, mail, application access, database management, ect) to any other computer. when most people think of a server they think of a 19" rack mount server sitting in a cabinet running 24/7/365 in a dedicated room, and this is the case in large business and IT enterprise, but, alot of small businesses run something that looks like a normal desktop case and shut it down nightly.

The performance difference from a new hard drive indirectly comes from its great capacity. It can read more data per revolution, and the head doesn't have to move as far to seek within a small system or temp partition. Also, if you reinstall the OS and transfer files instead of an image to a new drive, the data will become defragmented. A modern SATA hard drive connected to a first generation SATA port (generally still compatible) can transfer data at about 120 MB/s, which is an amazing speed.

DO NOT UNPLUG THE COMPUTER FROM THE WALL. Turn the switch to the off position, for the reason: that your computer should be grounded at all times so you do not unload a lot of static and fry your components. I am unaware of the US socket standards if this is not applicable to you, The UK standard has a dedicated ground for prety much everything. Hope what im saying is relavent and you didn't miss out what i said because it wasm't applicable.

What password? The the one held in the BIOS one can be reset to blank by clearing the CMOS (part of the BIOS). . If it is one on an account delete that account. If it is one with administrator rights, XP there is a "trick" involving safe mode, or you could use some password finding software like Ophcrack . No recommendations just Google it.

The cables that say master and slave are probably to connect IDE drives to your motherboard (two drives per socket one of the two has to be "in charge" hence Master) Flat ribbons with lots of wires and a red stripe at one side ?. The one marked cpu board FDD is probably the one that joins the Floppy Disk Drive to your motherboard (cpu board). Less wires than the IDE cable but still with the red stripe?
