Outstanding video! Can you please make a video on remarkable movies like "Before Sunrise" (Before- Trilogy)? The techniques used to create simplicity or simplicity used to create natural behavior on screen? Would love to see your input :) Great work.

A critic and a reviewer are different. A reviewer needs to understand the audience and a critic, the art. A critic will always sound educated and intelligent. Arts courses don't teach you to make art but to talk about art intelligently as if you're 'critiquing', not just reviewing. I realised this in a college course on film and literature. So you're not half wrong.

As Indian audience, we have become habituated with mediocrity so much, that even an average performance is celebrated with much fervour. People don't watch movies with an unbiased opinion. They have built different cults. You can't criticise any a-lister actor, because then you will be ridiculed and bullied by his or her die hard fans. It's like we are ready to worship anything and everything.

I think calling Aamir Khan an "average actor" is a bit harsh; actually I have always felt that Aamir becoming a Huge Star in the Bollywood system has limited him in his craft; despite this he has tried really hard to attempt different things; Overall unfortunately in all Film industries, there will always be better meatier roles for Character actors; look at the stuff Nawazuddin gets to do; does anyone think Aamir or Shahrukh will be allowed to try any roles like those? The studios will just not offer them these roles nor will they make any money. In the end, there are great actors and there are some HUGE money makers; very rarely they are the same performer. when they are , like a Brando or Day Lewis or yes an Aamir Khan, then we are lucky as the audience.

I have been watching your videos ardently and even forced my friends to watch them. Every critique that you do strangely leaves me feeling good and self-contemplative. The fear of vulnerability is what stops us from doing most of the things we want to, and yet it is letting go, entering that space and being vulnerable that makes us grow and create something new. Vulnerability is natural in anything worth doing, not something to be cured or forcibly evicted from the thought process. Now, I just want to steal your bookshelf and read what you are reading :) I love your work. To quote a part from the cryptic preface of "The picture of Dorian Gray", whose meaning i am yet deconstruct in its entirety. "The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim. The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things." You Sir, are a "True Critic" with Oscar Wilde certification . Keep up the good work.

Oh my god this video brought tears to my eyes. You called out actors like srk amir priyanka aishwariya ranveer kareena, pointed out that how bollywood is celebrating mediocrity and and hailing average actors as amazing ones where as some of the most amazing actors the great one like sanjay mishra, rajat kapur, ratna pathak, etc have been ignored for decades and even some new actors like zeeshan ayub are used in supporting roles. I am glad Rajkumar Rao finally getting the recognition he deserves. I know why you don't have many followers because people who love and enjoy mediocracy will never be able to hear this truth.

Another aspect is acting without any dialogue, with the silence - but still evoking enough emotion. Best example : SRK character's train sequence in Swades where he buys water from a kid. Just look at that scene, the eyes, his vulnerability, his realisation of his country's poverty situation -- absolute masterclass scene.

@@divanshukumarmahajan4803 he's surely way more versatile than those actors you just named. To be exact, what role these amazing actors do play sounds very much similar each time, either funny or villain. On the other hand Srk felt so much different in pure negative role being the antagonist like in darr and anjam. Not gonna talk about his romantic drama, which are even different than his suspense romantic like Dil Se. On the other hand Dil Se, Raju Ban Gaya Gentle Man showed his natural direction. Devdas, k3, Rab Ne, Darr... showed the industry's most expressive face, even more than top actresses. What made him world's most unreal actor. Swades, Chak De was his classic cult being a stereo type drama. I think I don't need to mention everything. From those name, only Manoj ji was a theater actor still no to srk level. On the other hand srk was a full fledge theater performer, did series drama including series. He's top dancer and action hero with a crazy flexible body movements unlike most of heroes today. You can have your cause but I can show you thousand logics that srk is the most talented and skilled actor in the world. He's Mohammad Rafi saab in acting without any 2nd thoughts. Remember Irfan said once Hollywood doesn't have srk.

I'm glad that I've always been saying that Amir khan and SRK are and were overrated. And so do many successful mainstream bollywood actors. As a layman, the thumb rule is if the character is believable, then it's good acting. Of course understanding the legitimacy of a character comes with familiarity of society that is subject to age and exploration. But the majority of the ones that we have been seeing are unreal. A great actor like Late Irfan sir could play a comic character without a punchline in 'Karwaan' because the character is so real.

iam a film student and a film maker . let me tell u this your channel is one of the best film study channels on you tube today across the world. i love the way you construct your stuff . this is how a critique should be and sound like rather then people who think use of complicated English words is good critique. w

What you said is mostly true but when calling out certain Indian depictions of emotion as loud you simple overlooked one aspect. If you watch real Indians on the roads and in their homes, we are loud. We cry loudly, we laugh loudly, we are dramatic in arguments, we fling our hands around. But the western people arent like that which reflects in their movies. So Art has to imitate whats local instead of just forcing whats in the West to Indian movies. For me subtle acting during emotional scene looks artificial in a village movie. This is the bad effect of aping the West.

that cultural dimension is indeed a good point! He totally missed out on that

@@TheValobalok True. Because it has become a general theme among such intelligent reviewers to unintentionally expect every Western element in an Indian movie. They almost seem to conclude that LOUD = CRAP movies. But I love loud humor or loud arguments in movies. When I thought why ? all I had to do was go to my relatives marriage and observe how we are. But in realistic movies of today what I find annoying is even an Autorickshaw guy will have crisp dialogues and comebacks! Now thats overkill from West. :D

But he gave example of ratna pathak shah's scene as great acting, which was actually a loud fight between husband and wife.

@@levelupwithrizwan9371 Good point. But I was talking about his dissing of other things and his generalisation. Although I dont justify SRK's over the top acting, I would love to see HAHK kind of movies, instead of avoiding them as "not realisitic" cos those movies have moments of "Indian realism" and not Western ones.

I think script and direction is much more important to bring out actor's potential than actor's themselves
