FANTASTIC information! I was really struggling with paper tuning using a thumb release. I was blaming it on the whisker biscuit and bad grip. I got so frustrated, I went back to start over again with index release and magically was shooting bullet holes. As an experiment I shot a bullet hole with my index release then shot the same arrow with my thumb release and got about a 3" horizontal tear! Your video helped me realize my problem had been face pressure and/or twisting the release. I'll be trying the thumb release again but now I know what I was doing wrong with it. Thank you!

The first release it what I started with. I hate that thing. "curl you finger like a rifle" Um no you should be using you finger TIP on a rifle. I have the same Scot release. I love that thing but I had to make some mods. I took the barrel completely off and hand cut cross hatching on the back thumb side. I put my thumb on the hatches and move my hand like I'm shooting a hinge. The trigger pushes on the inside of my thumb and THUMP goes the bow. Final thoughts: the Bowmar nose button is awesome. makes it much simpler to get a tactile feel of you anchor point and pressure on the string. Great video on different types of releases.

You know that when using ezv sight your hand against your is putting more pressure against the cheek? So, probably should just sell me the sight so to eliminate issues for you.

Once I figured this out it completely altered my accuracy with regards to facial pressure.

You do not curl your finger like that at all on a rifle
@averagejackarchery

Correct, but it's more curled than a lot of the stiff-slapped triggers I see in the archery community! Lol

Maybe a dumb question. I’m a new archer and using an index release. I want to move to a handheld. My question is does the d-loop and peep length/location have to change? I tried a buddies thumb release but couldn’t anchor to save my life. Couldn’t see through the peep to the sight without contorting my neck.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
Peep location and anchor location will change! But the dloop should stay exactly where it's at. Its placement is for bow tune, not for your anchor.

outstanding information. Face pressure was my issue, resolved today by removing the stupid kisser button. I've now got bare shafts flying like darts. Thanks!

One tip with face pressure is to keep a low let off. Now, this may not be possible for hunters who may need to hold for 30 seconds to a minute. However, if you have 80% letoff, when you come to full draw, 80% of the string's tension is gone, this makes it a lot easier to have a ton of face pressure, but since you're holding less weight because of the letoff, you don't notice you're having facial pressure if it is engrained into muscle memory from practice. Some people get a kisser button or the bowmar nose button to fix this issue because spikes from the nose button can give you feedback on how much face pressure you are having. And face pressure is not only important for tuning, it's key to having accuracy. Every time, with a properly tuned and timed bow, you don't miss left or right unless if the string doesn't go perfectly in line with the cams on release, if it has to move left or right, that causes misses. That is exactly why archery coaches go nuts over trying to have the right grip(it's a cradle, not a vise), and have a good t shape, and get a good executed shot. If you have good form and don't torque the bow, and have no face pressure, it goes in the middle.

youve read my mind again, i was looking a few months ago at replacing my bag target cover, and come to find your video on that. Now within the last week ive changed my release from wrist to handheld thumb release and upped my poundage a bit, and ive noticed a left of target hit. I adjusted my sight, thinking that was the problem, it still was happening. turns out with the new release i was applyng too much face pressure on my string, slightly nudging the string to the right with my face. ive been backing my face off a bit, and that fixed it. recording yourself shooting is a huge advantage

I just watched this again and picked up some more good insight. With your DL, what axle to axle do you use for target? I am going to buy my first target bow, and it was recommended to go with a 40". But I am slightly unsure about the length, and good bows cost money that my wife is not willing to allow me to blow away. My hunting bows range in ATA measurement, but the DW is 62-73# with a 30" DL. Any advice? Also, do you or would you hunt with a hinge release? Going to purchase my first...with a safety, to work on form and the shot process; but I would like to be able to use it for hunting and multiple bows

My wheelhouse for a target bow with a 31" draw is 37-39" ATA. Fits me perfect. I personally won't hunt with a hinge, but there are plenty of guys who do with great success. I just know I'd drop mine out of the tree. Lol!

Hi I'm a recurve Archer I've never shoot a compound before but there's something about the elite result that I just like my drawer length is 30" do you think that this bow will be good for me as a first timer to compound
@averagejackarchery

The at-home tuning capabilities bare just super for a newbie, and the draw cycle is very typical for Elite: very smooth, not worried about speed. If the price is right for you I'd give it two thumbs up!!!

Just my opinion find a pro shop that will let you try one and will work with you because by the time you add items it will get costly and you get home and shoot it a 100 times you may have questions and buying the higher quality items is definitely worth it 🤷🏼‍♂️👍

I use a kisser button, using a Scott little goose. And my d-loop has a small fray on the bottom. I’m considering buying a new one with a arm I can flip back out of the way from my range finder

The newer Scott releases have a folding arm. Both the Ghost and Jaws (on tree just not used in video) both have the flip back arm.

I like the scott releases with the nylon connector. You just tuck them back into the strap and they also have less possibility of torquing the string.

At 1:51. Curl your finger around the the release just like a rifle? I'm sure you have no idea what you've talking about... at least about shooting rifles. Wonder what else you have no idea what you've talking about. WOULD ALL YOU KZbinRS AND ENABLERS JUST STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW INSTEAD OF MAKING THINGS UP?

I shot competitively all through middle school and high school both air rifles and .22. Took 3rd internationally overall and 1st in the Sitting position at the IBBGCM in Kentucky at 12 years old. Trust me. I know how to shoot a gun. However, you are right that the analogy that it's not a full curl like with a bow release. But I use the analogy as for some reason people can't connect "curl" with "bow". But for some reason "gun" resonates with them and they can figure it out. That's my intention. Not to set off a gun trigger finger debate on an archery channel. Thanks for the input!

Teri, Former U.S. Marine double award rifle expert and pistol expert here...It is perfectly acceptable to curl your finger around the trigger. What matters is your trigger discipline. No matter what you are shooting. Jack is very experienced and we should be thanking him for teaching others FOR FREE.
