White Teeth 😭😭😭😭😭 The way I screamed out loud when you pulled up that book! Zadie Smith is one of my favourite writers, truly. Top five, maybe even top three. I loveeeee this book. I never wanted it to end, but I thought the ending was hilarious and brilliant. If you have not read On Beauty (same author), please, please do! If you felt like you wanted or needed more White Teeth...On Beauty. Also a saga, also brilliantly nuanced characters, dynamics, etc.

Can't wait for the road trip video! I mentioned the blue and pink sky to my niece on the phone a few weeks ago and it made her think of Maida's Little Shop by Inez Haynes Irwin. I spent the weekend with her (I took her to see Lizz Wright on Mountain Stage!) and she had the book out for me to read. It's all about a little girl, Maida, who's been ill. Maida's better but has lost the joy of living. Her father is very rich and gives her whatever he thinks she wants. He is finally advised that Maida doesn't need more things. She needs something to do. She expresses delight at a little shop that sells candies and things so he buys it for her to run and so far, she seems to have perked up. It's a sweet little thing and a nice break from the dragons and zombie princes I seem to crave lately. I really want to pick up White Teeth. Thanks for so many wonderful recs!

@beabaptistaa Жыл бұрын
@@rifahd138 for me it was a 4/5 stars! his writing style is amazing, super poetic, nostalgic and melancholic, I'd even read his shopping list ahah that being said the plot and the themes (homosexuality, masculinity, self identity, love) are also really interesting and tragic. as a black author, writing a book without black characters was and still is controversial, in my opinion it can lead to a mindful and educational discussion about it, even tho it's not a theme addressed in the book. + it's around 150 pages (not a big commitment imo), so yes you should give it a try! :)

100% on the Mason. Nothing about about the look, marketing or suggested premise set it up as a book I might want to read - so much so that I don't have a Scooby why I actually decided to give it try 🤷(Women's Prize Longlist maybe... IDK) But somehow I did and ended up enjoying it a fair bit - certainly a lot more than I expected. Not a foxed favourite, but a solid read. Glad you had a positive experience with it as well. And, yes, that cover is an abomination. I read White Teeth close to when it first came out. So while my decrepit memory has erased the finer details over time, I still remember it being a fantastic book.
