This is why I was actually really pleased about the RP5 and RP Mini from Retroid, same device (battery size aside) different form-factor. You want a 4:3 or "more pocketable" device you've got that, you want something more in common with previous numbered Pocket devices in 16:9 you've got that.

I agree 100%, this Handheld Market would be completely boring if every company was AYN or Retroid. Some of us want Handhelds that Replicate or Enhance games we used to play as kids. Plus like I said I want an RG-CUBE XX to take the weight off my RG-CUBE. PS2 and GameCube games take up a lot of space on my RG-CUBE, having my full Retro Romset on there too almost fills up my storage on my RG-CUBE.

anbernic has basically swarmed the 50-70$ market with almost every form factor for that same chip, and honestly it's not a bad idea. cause there's only one more "price point" at about $150-200, and after that it's basically the steam deck

Heck there are steam decks sometimes in the $200 price range but not really since you then need to buy some storage for it.

I think the $200-300 range needs more options. The Odin 2 firmly holds the $300, maximum android performance side of things, with the RP4P and RP5 taking the 200ish spot. In between there isn't a whole lot that provides equivalent performance for that price (mayyybe the Razer Edge)

The Anbernic RG CubeXX seems perfect for handheld fighters that were on the GB systems, GG, NG, NGPC, systems especially with that Sega Genesis/Saturn style floating circular d-pad. Can't go wrong with that. Then with the PS button style layout with NS style sticks, which is pretty decent for fighters as well and also for other game genres. Addition to that, good grips, unique 1:1 ratio, cool modern LED sticks and nice colorways with in-game bezels 😎Overall, man this sure is a frankenstein system indeed! But in a cool, great and good way! Awesome that it can hooked up to a TV too with no problems straight outta the box too so it's like a legit home console. Also, PLEASEEEE tell Anbernic to make a DS analogue. We have enough of these handhelds. I have five of them. I hope they are ambitious enough to make an XXDS line like they did with the XXSP.
@skycloud48023 ай бұрын
There does definitely need to be more DS clones out there. Although the only thing is, that I'm guessing the chip set might have to be pretty powerful to display an emulator over two separate screens? And it'll probably need extra sensors for better DS/DSi compatibility, dual cameras, built-in microphone, touch screen etc?
@ToyKeeper3 ай бұрын
A DS / 3DS model would be really cool. I gave up waiting though, and mostly just play on a phone now. With a 1080x2400 oled touchscreen at 6.7", it's the size of three rg35xx screens stacked on top of each other, but with higher pixel density. So it works pretty well for DS, whether vertical or horizontal. Just add a controller, and it has been easily my best "retro handheld".

@@skycloud4802 A device like that should be absolutely possible to make even with the RK3566 chip. If two displays were used at 800x480 and 640x480 resolutions (double of what 3DS had) it would be absolutely capable to run them both since it has two MIPI outputs. Cameras and microphones would also not be a problem since the chip has hardware to handle all these inputs (it's a media SoC). If I decent heatsink was added I think that even 3566 could be able to emulate 3DS games.

@chrisharrison33743 ай бұрын
The issue is that there does not appear to be any large 4:3 screens. Unless one of these companies stump up significant investment to produce one (and ultimately have to price their device to accommodate that) we are now stuck with whatever workarounds they can find, and a seemingly infinite number of devices doing the same-ish things to keep the market ticking over.
@TheRealAlpha23 ай бұрын
Just buy the black one, you'll never notice the bezels on 4:3 content.
@bobbylucas133 ай бұрын
@@TheRealAlpha2 true, but I’d rather have the height of the display filled up for a bigger screen overall, like a 4x5.33 inch rather than 4x4 inch screen. Would have a much larger image for 4:3 content that way and best of both worlds in terms of gameboy, gba & psp looking good on the screen without too much black bars on the sides. Would just make it more of a good all rounder than one specially suited to certain aspect ratios.

@TheRealAlpha23 ай бұрын
@@bobbylucas13 the only problem is that no one seems to make a high resolution (In this case a 720p screen) in those dimensions, or if they do the cost for a custom panel might push it into a higher price bracket that makes it less budget friendly and not really a viable product. After a certain size it seems like they all just become 16:9 panels and then you have the aspect ratio issue all over again from a different direction.

I am having a blast with my Cube XX. I love the style, shape, build quality and the price. It just surpassed my RG280M as my favorite. Luckily all my favorite games are old school and or I'd be breaking the bank.

Hey mister Handheld man, how about a video for the best mobile ways to play ScumVM? I've seen so many forms and factor to play basically all retro consoles perfectly, but what about my beloved Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and Beneath a steel sky?

No way! I love that they made another 4×4" screen! RGB30 is one of my favorites for that reason. So, is this new CubeXX a good enough upgrade of the RGB30.

What I appreciate about this handheld is that if one wanted to get the RG Arc this is basically the better option
@Bob_Smith193 ай бұрын
No it’s not, you buy the ARC for the six button layout. It’s a Sega emulator first and foremost. The Cube XX is for everything.
@SergioSergio123453 ай бұрын
@@Bob_Smith19 Obviously yes, it's the same reason why I got the Arc, but with the Cube being for everything it does feel like a more sensible choice

Wow glad I held off buying the RG Cube (which was over-powered and over-priced for what I wanted it for).

Still I feel like there's a tier between $60 and $170 that isn't quite being served with either model. Maybe a slightly higher performance Linux-only model that can actually play N64, around the $100 price point. That would be an endgame handheld for me. I don't need something that runs Android. This model with better performance and maybe Hall Effect sticks...

@@wewd Interesting. I would also prefer Linux but an android device is fairly easy to switch to if you already have your roms on your phone and know how to set things up.

The rg cube can play every arcade shmup... This can barely play a quarter of them... Completely defeats the purpose of the tall screen

34:55 The problem lies with the cable, not with the charger. Try with the USB-C to USB-C cable from the RG552 with all the chargers that you have. This is the only cable that it will work with.

I'm getting older and blinder. I have an RG35XX H and find it a little to small to be easily readable. I think it would be cool when you review screen sizes to include text size/readability. Well, at least when it comes to the smaller screens.

Looks like you’ll get your wish with the 406p coming next! Screen and sticks from the 406v in a compact horizontal form factor. If they put the dpad up top (they won’t), it would be the perfect device.

Question, are you sure it's stereo audio, and not dual mono?
@xythen0523 ай бұрын
I do love how thorough you are with your review, but I'm disappointed you never talk about ghosting / response times of these screens. It's one of the key quality measures beyond size, especially for 2D games where the sharp pixel borders can create noticeable motion artifacts. The square screens and 4 inch screens are noticeably worse at this than most of the 3.5 inch screen devices I have. It's one of the biggest benefits of oled screens, for the increased motion clarity.

The cardinal snapping is a real problem on the RG556. I've been struggling to aim in my cricket games, so it removes all the skill and strategy and makes getting a wicket or restricting scoring a matter of luck when bowling. Batting is okay. Shooting and racing games can be a challenge too, i'm almost always a little off of where I intend to aim/be. If Gamma can perform a software fix, why can't Anbernic? Or why can't they partner with him in preparing an OTA update? It's their most premium, basically Android flagship device. It gives pause when thinking about purchasing other devices because the post-purchase support feels... uncertain. I mean, even confirming how long the device would be supported removes some of that anxiety. And while I don't mind tinkering and mods, nobody wants to void their warranty when they only have one device (if there is a warranty).
@Pridetoons3 ай бұрын
This definitely something to worry about. I'm going to Email Anbernic about these issues too.
