LeKaNsWaNsOn I agree wholeheartedly which is why I’m buying the game. People make criticisms about the graphics (which aren’t bad) or the that it’s not this or that. The game is exactly what it suppose to be. “You mean we have to learn how to make a spear?” “You mean if I fall out of a 100 foot tree, I’m going to die?” It’s called ancestors for a reason

Some tips for the ancestors people who are still around and about!: Early game: Stick to the trees when possible, not only is it MUCH faster to swing from branch to branch and SIGNIFICANTLY safer to do so. Eat everything at least once, and what you can't eat, eat in moderation. It REALLY helps down the line. It's better to fight then dodge. You Drop items when you dodge and whatever attacked you is going to keep pursuit until it gets hurt or manage to run away. That said, it's better to climb away then run away for obvious reasons. Mid game. your walking on two legs? You've evolved a few times? At this point your going to still be a little faster in the trees, but your also fast enough to actually run on the ground too. You might want to think about taking and arming a few people with you when you travel. They can work wonders in your survival by acting as extra storage, and extra chances to save your ape that you messed up the skill check with. Bring ALL your kids to each meteorite when you FIRST discover them. It gives them mutations and doubles reinforcement points for EACH one you bring. It's possible to have every adult and elder have a mutation before evolution...it's a amazing way to get more Quality of life things. You should also start eating a lot of meat. Your going to be killed a lot of things so you might as well get something from it. I'll answer any questions you have if you manage to find this comment on such a old vid lol

I'm about 15 hours in at the moment and so far I can only recommend this game. Yes it's a bit grindy and you spend a lot of the time doing the same things (sharpening sticks, bashing rocks together, gathering leaves for a bed, etc.), but the sheer scope of the world and the variety of activities makes up for that, at least in my view. The progression is slow enough that I actually have to put effort into it but fast enough that I never get bored. I'm immensely enjoying watching my clan slowly transform from scared little branch-swingers into perceptive, resourceful and well-armed bipeds. Those looking for consistent challenge rather than exploration should know it fairly quickly becomes very easy to deal with predators and they turn into more a nuisance than a threat. I've had more apes accidentally fall from a tree to the bottom of a cliff than get eaten. I dunno, maybe that's realistic. This game is everything you'd expect in a hominid life simulator.

@@utherdoul2682 I've played about the same time and yes its slow and sometimes grundy, very rarely though, its slow but there's so much stuff to do and things that you personally can do to make your apes better for example walking in water so you can get a mutation that allows you to walk on two feet. At the same time you could be exploring, avoiding predators to see the next landmark that could be a potential home. A true survival game about the journey and patience

Yeah shame it's not in realtime and takes 8 million years to progress 8 million years. /sarcasm Honestly if the developers make you watch the same 6 cutscenes 100 times throughout your playthrough that's a stupid easy to fix mistake they shouldn't have made in the first place. If they don't shorten early game challenges so they don't take as long midgame so you feel like the last hour was the same as the hour before that and the hour before that, that's also a bad design. Fun games don't make you do the same thing over and over and over.

I think what would make it better if the game allows you to evolve to a caveman half way thru maybe with a different set of challenges to evolve into mordern man.

The thing is it's based off of actual history and it's not as simple as that with all the species until you finally reach human, they are also planning on making 2 more games, at least that's what I have heard, which will continue and with the sequel probably with the player being a "caveman"

yeah it would've been cool to have different climate eras - like imagine starting out as monkey and learning the basics of how to gather animal furs for example/killing an animal - then fast forward 100 000 years and you gotta use that skill to group hunt a wolly mammoth for its fur and meat so you can survive a coming winter season or something.

That actually doesn't sound that bad as long as you're the kind of person who's down to put 500-1000 hours down in order to become an anatomically modern human. I really like the idea of this though, especially if your diet and the things you do and discover effect how you actually evolve. Maybe your ape just needed to eat a lot more meat? That was a big step for real prehistoric humans insofar as our brains becoming more complex. Anyway, this is some interesting design and it kinda reminds me of a more elaborate Cubivore or Spore. Could it be somewhat edutainment? I'll have to look into this and ask my paleoanthropology friends if it's accurate...

6:02 that is exactly the case you mention that you are grinding out kids but you do not have to, in the begging of the game the dev's lead you to a meteor and tell you that finding these meteors with babies gives you more reinforcement points so you can quickly evolve instead of passing so many generation which is what gave you that "Grind" feeling. This game is meant to be played slow and if a game tells you they wont give you lots of help, then when they finally do you NEED to pay attention. I cannot explain how many lovely playthroughs I watch fall with this game because no one could figure this one simple detail. Once you find one meteor it creates a journey to them making a purpose and overall bringing the fun back. Being so caught in finding more and advancing your clan so quickly, before you know it you are at the end of the map walking on two feet only( you said you could never get this but all you had to do was focus on walking more and reinforcing the neurons to get to the ability.) I really do think the "game" aspect of Ancestors was finding these meteors because once you do this you have a purpose.

I find it very refreshing to see a game that's pretty much about life - You're dropped in it to work things out for yourself, with only your wits to guide you. The irony is is that the games' greatest strength is it's weakness: It's too open-ended with no clear goal in sight other than surviving and possibly thriving. As a game, it needs more reward than that for the viewer to be satisfied with playing. That said, I find the aspect of playing as an animal very appealing, very interesting, and has loads of potential. It's such a breath of fresh air to see a game that doesn't include so much combat for a change, and can include acts of compassion like caring for the babies and grooming other primates. Kudos for something original, risky, and new. :-)

fan zhang you must be misunderstanding; if a video game that seeks to gamify life feels like a grind and unsatisfying, it’s cause that’s what it’s emulating. Like you said, life is full of jobs that are pointless grinds, this game is about the beginnings of that, and I imagine it’s always been a bit like it is now. But the rewards of life seem to be those you give yourself, and doing so gets you to be someone that those around you would want to reward, or at least hire you. I think something about that would be lost in the emulation; like watching your sims hangout is just not something you can vicariously live through; you still want real friends to hangout with. Plus, making it a real grind could make it an educational tool to show kids why industrialization is worth working towards changing & keeping around, despite the many challenges they’re aware they have to overcome, that are a direct result of industrialization.

Ark one of the most egregious examples of grind allows you to ride dinosours for payoff and also most stuff does not required prerendered animations for almost every action . This game gives you a slightly sharper stick. Now I have no problem with that because is the games concept. But the amount of hands off action in this game makes it so much worse.
@Kevin-rj5zp4 жыл бұрын
Tbh the “grindy, tedious” description really just makes me more excited to get this, seeing as it’s already about evolution. I’m sure a lot of the major breakthroughs our ancestors went through made our ancestors greatly satisfied, but a lot of them also felt as though they only made small change. Honestly, it makes sense; the actions they carried out seemed intense at first and then dull after constant repetition, and the rewards for finding new things weren’t great. This just proves that this game really has emulated survival so well, all our ancestors’ actions earned the reward of getting to live a little longer, nothing more

I don't remember if it was a gameranx video but I think so, like one of their top upcoming games videos. I left a comment about how I'm surprisingly good at predicting how games will turn out and let people know which I considered "guaranteed good games" on that list (speaking of, Astral chain were on there and one of the ones I considered guaranteed and were recently released to pretty great reviews) and which ones I thought had red flags that shouldn't be preordered or bought before looking at reviews and gameplay videos. I said that Ancestors were really up in the air because in the marketing material they didn't really show anything other than the early ape stages and nothing that gave me any indication of fun stuff to do. So I said it could surprisingly be good but I felt like it was more likely to end up like spore which sounds fun as an idea but quickly becomes soul suckingly boring, pretty close to the description in this video I think. Damn I'm gifted in this kind of stuff, i really should figure out what I could do with it. I wish I had a more clearly useful gift though.

I can't wait to play this. I don't know what other people expected from a game that involves evolution but it's exactly what I wanted. I already know the game only takes you to very early man so probably won't be making fires or wheels or anything like that until the second game. This one seems to focus on early tribalism so it's gonna be more interactions and exploration than anything.

They could probably make the predator thing more difficult and believable by adding a dice roll mechanic into each individual ape. Maybe the likelihood they will do what you tell them to do or something. Not every ape should have the decision making and reflexes of the person controlling them. Maybe also do some rebalancing of progression speed.

It's a nice concept, no guidance or tutorials, but a sense of progression in any game is pretty much fundamental. Or at least a sense of becoming better and stronger. Without either of these, there's no incentive to keep doing what you're doing. It's really all the game is missing.
@LnPPersonified4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would be nice if the game limited how many things you could "discover" before you had to move on, thus giving it a better sense of progression. Each time you move on to the next generation the skill tree is larger, and you can discover and evolve for a bit, and then move on again.
