It is very mystical and the reason they don’t have written history is cause they believe it should be passed down orally. They have a long tradition of story telling. Fantastic work, Ali! Being an Indian living in Europe, I was amazed and somewhat overwhelmed to learn about the Romani’s historical Indian connect and lineage. Theirs is truly a culture that must be preserved and celebrated. And perhaps the only way that’s possible is through a process of Western catharsis and recognition that the Romani deserve after all they’ve suffered and been through over centuries. Truly a fantastic start and well done again 🙏

I'm an English born Romani. When I visited India for the first time (over 20 years ago), I was shocked to discover I understood some of your language. I was in Maharashtra at the time. It was a surreal experience. Also, seeing some of the northern tribal women, I had the bizarre experience that I recognized/knew them somehow. I didn't think it in my head, I felt it in my body, if that makes sense. Like DNA recognizing itself. This was all before I understood our genetic connections.

Unfortunately, they also suffered in India. The European Roma are probably the descendants of Dalits, the untouchables who are at the lowest level of the Indian caste system, who left the Indian subcontinent approximately 1,000 years ago, an Indian-Estonian international study revealed. The authors compared the DNA samples of European Roma men and thousands of inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent. More than 10,000 biological samples from 214 different ethnic groups were examined. The greatest similarity was found in DNA samples collected among members of the lowest caste, the untouchables, who live in some areas of northwest India. Although the caste system was officially abolished in India, it still remains in many places. An estimated 160 million people belong to the Dalit caste. Untouchables are not allowed to enter temples, the houses of higher caste persons and can only do the menial jobs. Researchers believe that the ancestors of the European Roma migrated west to take part in the war that raged in the Punjab region between 1001 and 1026. They were probably promised a higher caste if they won. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/9719058/European-Roma-descended-from-Indian-untouchables-genetic-study-shows.html

I was compelled to tune in to your excellent video on the Romani because I have always been called to investigate their culture, history and especially their music. I grew up in England, the North to be precise where we had many Romani folk living on the periphery of our cities. We were so used to them coming door to door selling their goods, offering to work, etc. As young children we longed to be admitted to their groups where there was often music, a fire and lots of children who always appeared to us very free to run and play at will. I longed to be one of those fortunate children. Of course, at that time we knew nothing of the discrimination towards their groups. They were never spoken of in a negative manner and my parents always welcomed them at our door selling goods and offering to work. Your expose of their struggle through the centuries was very enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

Or the mistreatment and harmful stereotypes they've faced (regardless of what name people call them)?

What small insecure leaders perpetuate this? We all need to belong to each other. Now more than ever.

Hi Tom, great to see you here too. You met my twin sister Char and I at our Osage gathering a few years back. As well as that, we also have Romani heritage as well as Native. I am equally proud to come frm both. I am a mix of multiple ethnic groups in my family tree coming together. To those who are going to predictably try to tell me that you cannot be more than one thing only, yes, you can. Any combination of ancestry is possible when humans come together. I am grateful to be a mix of things as it has literally taught me tolerance of other people's backgrounds and cultures, too. It has also taught me to not judge someone just based on what culture they are or are not. I go by character and love learning about ALL world cultures because we are all human in the end. My dream is that one day we will all see, and treat, each other as equals and learn to appreciate our differences and what makes us each unique (both as groups and as individuals, as well) instead of discriminating against each other over them.

As a young man I was stationed in Southern Spain. I can’t tell you exactly what I was told about the Gypsies by locals but I do remember it was something negative. As I got older I learned more about them and their music. I always knew my family originally came from Spain in 1769 during the Portola Expedition but recently I took a DNA test and found out I was in part Gitano. Life it’s definitely a trip!

Hello Mehmed! I hope you are well. This is an amazing video indeed! I too, carry some Romani ancestry and it's also helped me to understand more about my own roots. I have some South Asian ancestry & interestingly, when i used Gedmatch, i kept seeing "Romani & Romania" showing. I wanted to learn more about that part of my DNA & now that i'm watching more interesting documentaries and seeing the full Romani history, their DNA etc;, i've come to realise, understand & truly appreciate, why my results are as they are. Needless to say, i'm so very proud, of my Romani ancestry and actually, when i look into the mirror, i can see some physical evidence, of my Romani ancestry. And this, is a wonderful and beautiful thing and also knowing for me. I don't know where you live, but i live in Australia, Cheers, take care & God bless you and your peoples. May your futures be brighter and may more come to learn about, understand and appreciate your peoples. :-)

Oh how my heart bursts with love, happiness, great interest and intrigue, when i hear and see anything, regarding the incredibly beautiful Romani peoples & their respective cultures. I want to thank you dear brother, for bringing this and many other very educational and informative videos to this world. You are seriously enlightening/educating those who do not know, those who are ignorant and naive. This is a superb video and although i did know much regarding the Romani peoples and their history, i've still learnt even more, by watching this video. I'm a subscriber now and i will be watching all of your awesome videos. To the Romani peoples, i wish to say........Please be very proud of who you are and always walk with your heads held high, knowing that you are a unique and beautiful human ethnic group and you possess a wonderfully rich and colourful history. Those who do not understand or even show respect, are the one's who lose so much. They miss out on getting to know more, about a wonderful peoples, who have so much love and kindness within their hearts and souls. Such joie de vivre. May we learn from past/present human wrongs and atrocities & may we allow love and peace to permeate our hearts and minds and repel all hatred and evil. For hatred and evil, makes us none the wiser and only hurts us more in the end. May we educate ourselves more and may we cease to reject, isolate, ostracise, and condemn innocent souls, for this, is the greatest of human sins/evils. May God bless the Romani peoples globally. Please know that i love you all and i carry the deepest respect for you all and i can only wish you all, much better, more respectful, more peaceful and more inclusive years ahead.

In Hungary, where I live, there was an anti-roma protest, there was many extremist right-wing people. It was because a man tragically died because two people stabbed him, and they thought that they were romanis. It was awful, they shouted things like: “there is roma crime” and they said that we should stop roma-crime. They found out later that the two criminals wasn’t even romani, so it was purely a racist protest. Other example: the supreme court gave financial compensation for the students in Gyöngyöspata, because they were purely segregated by their race. They got the worse teachers, they weren’t allowed to use the bathroom what the white kids used, and they were on an other floor in the school. And it was because of their race, not because of their grades, or behavior. And the PRIME MINISTER of Hungary said that its bad that they got a refund, because they didn’t deserved it. Nobody here try to uplift romanis, because yes, many of them live in a very bad situation. But how we expect them to live in a higher class when these kind of situations happening all of the time? Many hungarian think that romanis are criminals because “it’s in their blood” which is obviously ridiculous....

Historical Error: During Abbasid Caliphate, Indian musicians, architects and artisans (in a very large number) were forcibly taken away for different purposes by an Islamic invader, but then they were left as the State wasn't able to sustain them anymore, And they were not allowed to go back to their nation and hence they were welcomed and then hated by the europeans, got butchered And became victims of a very organized genocide.

Never had a good or at least positive experience with any Roma and I have encountered them in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary and the former USSR. They are uniquely able to make themselves hated anywhere they go. Roma apologists generally have never had to live or work around them. I lost all hope for these people when I watched them prostitute their prepubescent girls (and boys) to tourists in Constanta, Romania. Stereotypes do not arise spontaneously or with out reason. Furthermore, something isn't a stereotype if it is true, which is the case with most descriptions of Roma behaviour.

This was wonderful! Jonathan Lee is obviously chock-full of valuable information and I will look for more from him. I spent two weeks in Rome and Florence and saw many Roma begging. Considering their living conditions (as you show!), I can understand why they have to resort to it. One woman was in obvious need of medical care. I've watched several documentaries on KZbin about Roma in various E, European countries and they are similarly forced to live in terrible places, while also being refused garbage, water and power services, and cannot find steady employment. It's interesting that in the USA, the Roma blend in with everyone else, so don't make obvious targets. Thank you,, Ali. This was important.

I'm from Germany and I remember the cultural bias against the Roma I was surrounded by since birth (which still exists to this day) I was ushered away from women wearing traditionally romani clothing by my parents, I saw the negative portrayal of romani people in the media, I listened to teachers spewing what I now recognize as blatantly racist rhetoric and when I learned about the holocaust in school, the genocide of the Sinti and Roma was only a footnote or maybe mentioned in passing. It's mindboggling how accepted open racism against the Roma still is, even in a country that tries so hard to distance itself from its racist past I'm only now learning more about the beautiful romani culture on my own accord after being taught my whole life that they were to be feared, and it's eye-opening....
