Thank you for this explanation of the Family Data Collection. I was researching my sources for a particular ancestor recently and found myself confused by that one, because it didn't show the original source. Your explanation makes sense. Thankfully my other sources for this particular ancestor complement/support the info from the Family Data Collection.

Do you know about Advantage Archives? Our historical society uses them to digitize and host our digital collection. If you look at their directory, they are offering resources from a number of smaller archives. We uploaded our small town newspapers up through the 1950s with no paywall. Even though I am an Ancestry all access member,however, you quickly find out that it is not all access, and I look for other ways to find the info. Cheers!
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with Advantage Archives. I looked around their website briefly... It appears they do the digitizing for others. Can you research on there? I didn't see how, but I was only on there a few minutes.

I would love to see more historically African American newspapers. I rarely find much from Perry county Alabama. And so many paid subscriptions.
@pbcanal14 жыл бұрын
@@GenealogyTVOur historical society just began to use them. They do the scanning and digitizing and then you can have them host the files so they are safeguarded. What we do on our end is post a link to our search page that AA hosts. The issue is knowing who they host. On their home page, scroll to the bottom and click on the map with all the icons. That will open their list of who they have worked with. For example, I noticed in NC that they did the files for the St Paris Public Library. When you click on the icon, you go to the search portal called the community history archive. That is basically AA. What is nice is that your search is targeted to those resources listed. And you can scroll through the pages instead of trying to guess the file number for the page where your article is continued on. And no, I am not a paid spokesperson, just a happy customer!

I've found that some marriage notices in papers dont match the official documents so there could be a high error rate by newspapers or the people paying for the notice. I guess its like when people pay for a message to be put on a cake and it gets mixed up.

Does the Obituary indexing also look at Death Notices or only the Obituaries? Death Notices are sometimes in the classified ads section of the newspaper.

I find obits are one of the best sources out there. So many times I had no children listed and when i find an obit they actually had 2 or 3 kids. I was part of the one world tree back in the day and still will see my info out there is someone elses family tree with one world tree as a sourse. Easy to spot when you had a specific way of doing things, for instance if someone doesn't have a middle name I always put (n) after the first name.
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I had forgotten about the (n).

I can never get enough newspaper content. I have Ancestry all access with publishers extra, Genealogy Bank, and Newspapers Archive. Plus I use the Ancestor Hunt to find free Newspaper sites. It's better to wait for Ancestry to throw a discounted price at you before starting a subscription. If your patient you can wait them out for half price offers. Have not been impressed with the obit and marriage indexes on Ancestry because they miss too many obits and articles. I prefer searching the Newpapers.com site directly because you find so much more content besides the obits.

Very helpful. I felt like I was ignorant of some professional “next step” to dig into these references, it was somewhat comforting to learn, no, those are just legacy flat file remains of older databases. I’ve played around with genealogy, off and on, for 25 years or so. It’s so much easier now than it was - I just discovered a marriage record for the parents of the unsinkable Molly Brown that doesn’t appear in her biographical record. (Trying to find out if her Tobin relatives are my cousins). An amateur today can discover more in a day than a scholar could ever find, even just 15 years ago.

This is really cool but unfortunately, between memberships at Ancestry, My Heritage and numerous DNA kits, I am at the end of my fixed income, monetary resources. I found a lot of marriage/divorce info during a free month that Newspapers.com did last year but I would have to sacrifice one of the above or become independently wealthy to add yet another membership. "SIGH"
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
I understand. I know people who rotate their subscriptions around.... like for three months on MyHeritage, then pause,,, and move to another resource. The cool part is you can usually search to see what is out there...and keep a list going, turn it on for a month or two, collect what you need and then turn it off. It does get expensive for sure.

Hello from New Zealand, first up love the videos, but a would like to know if you can do a video on printing out your entire family tree and if you can print it out in one massive wall chart, only asking cause I have 68,100 something people in my tree and it would be good to have it printed out so it can be used to audit the tree for mistakes and to not get lost another word use a printed tree as Breadcrumbs so you don't get lost
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark in New Zealand. I've always wanted to go there. Some day maybe. Yes you can print out a family tree chart. I don't know if you can do that many in one chart though. Check out Family Chart Masters... and tell them I sent you. familychartmasters.com/

I’ve been away from genealogy for probably like six months or longer and there’s so much stuff that’s been added. I was hardcore on it for almost two years but I let it fade to be able to stay closer to Jesus because it tends to become an idol and something I do too much. If they don’t already have it Ancestry should add a feature to where you can open up a record collection and then view all the saved, new, undecided, etc hints on your tree from that collection. That way you can see all the hints in your tree that are yearbook photos or marriage articles, obituaries, death certificates, etc.
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
It does show you what you've already added to your tree in the green box when you do a search.

Great video. Question: Are death notices included in this Obit Index between Ancestry and Newspapers.com? So many times there is no actual obit, but maybe just a death notice. And is this Obit Index complete for all U.S. newspapers found on Newspapers.com or is it in it's early stages of development and only some of the U.S. newspapers are complete? Thanks very much.
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
Yes death announcements are included. I believe it is constantly updating as more newspapers are acquired.
