My ancestor came from Scotland to Massachusetts, mid 1850s, birthdate unknown. Someone selected a woman of about the right age from the 1851 Scot. census and assumed it was correct. However, their choice was still living at home in Scotland in 1861 and 1871, while the right one married here in 1858. So you are absolutely correct - never assume!

Oh my goodness! I am sitting in Anson County NC, and just happened to run across your video this evening! How cool! This is very helpful information. My father is 98 years old, and still has a good memory. I love asking him about things he remembers. He was telling me this evening about being in a chow line one evening in England during World War II, and hearing someone say What are you doing here? He looked up and saw a guy he knew from here in Lilesville! He was telling me about the guy and his brother that was also in a company that was in the same city around that same time. Hi there! Great channel! I just have a quick comment on the "Last Logged In" info that Ancestry shows .... it's something that Ancestry should change, because many people just close their browser when they're done so they don't have to log in again next time. My "last logged in" shows 6 months ago, even though I use Ancestry every single day. (There was a power outage, so when power returned, I had to log in again.) Ditto for other researchers I connect with.... I think it's a relic from the days when more people used public computers to access Ancestry. These days, browsers on public computers are set to erase their history when they're closed, effectively logging that user off.

Sometimes, it is worth the effort to message someone who has not been on Ancestry for months, as they are sent an alert! Maybe they just got busy, or ill, or whatever, and the message reminds them to get back into Genealogy. I only do this if it appears they have some info about a specific person, or if I can offer them some direction on a Brick Wall. If the person is out-of-it, sometimes a Caretaker will respond. No one have ever said "Don't write again"!

I too find it irritating. Heck,I just had a first cousin appear on my DNA matches. Messaged her,didnt get an answer. But there is a good reason for that. Another thing that is weird is that when you check shared matches,it doesn't go below 20 cm. That hampers things a bit.
@ViolentRainbow4 жыл бұрын
@@johngavin1175 Yes that is so annoying! It would help my research so much if they showed ALL shared matches, I have no idea why they seem to think less DNA shared means the person is irrelevant or something, I have people who I share ancestors with in the late 1800s who I somehow only share 6cm of DNA with but finding them was crucial to help find my ancestors and confirm I was on the right track and now ancestry has eliminated all people with less than 8cm from even showing up at all!

No. 4 "Last Signed In" issue. Please note that this is not when they last used Ancestry. This is the last time they signed in after logging out. Ancestry doesn't sign you out when you leave the website like 23andMe, FTDNA and LivingDNA. It would make sense for MyHeritage and Ancestry to bump people out when they are no longer on the website, but they do not, so if you have not entered your email and password in 11 months, it'll say you last signed in 11 months ago.

Scott K: You could make a custom DNA tag. It won't show up as part of the relative's name though. Alternatively, you don't need an emoji. You can put an alphanumeric string at the end of a relative's name to differentiate him or her from another relative with a similar name.

Ancestry should have an option to scroll over an Icon of the tree and have it expand as an overlay just for quick viewing and you can move your mouse to have it contract to just the icon again. I can't tell you how many times I just need to see a birth date of the dad or mom quickly to calculate an age. But no, I have to keep the tree open in another window. Most times I have three of 4 windows open just because I want quick access to the tree. Even if it's just the surrounding relationships of the person I'm researching.

Thank you for your very informative tips! There is one thing that I still cannot figure out how to do on Ancestry which you might possibly include in another video. I have successfully searched for and found a relative on another family tree which is quite large. So large that they do not show in the pedigree view. When I search the tree through the list of names, they are there. I can easily view their profile and it lets me see a tree of my relative's file BUT, I cannot see how they are connected to anyone who is visible on the pedigree view of the main tree. Is there an easy way to do this? Any chance you can help me?
@GenealogyTV2 жыл бұрын
You can try to switch to the family view and search again to see if they show up in the bigger descendants view. If they don't they are likely floaters in the tree (meaning a branch that is disconnected).

Yes... next time, right click and "open in a new tab" anytime you are clicking through a link or record. That way your ancestors profile will stay open in the left most tab (until you close it). Thanks to Crista Cowan at Ancestry for that one. She taught me that one years ago.

OMG!! As I watched the video, I was doing the same tasks on my Ancestry acct for practice, not because I was searching for anyone. And, even though I know all the hidden tools I still managed to find a tree, managed by a DNA match and, after swapping a few messages found out the tree in question has amazing genealogy leads/motherlode of maternal ancestors - all the way back to a 13th great-grandmother in early 16th century!! I love it when I 'stumble' on treasure troves like this! I have to do a lot of research to verify but having enough leads to have at least 1 ancestor at each generation going back that far is HUGE!

I have watched several of your programmes. How do I build a tree for my own use and keep it from others seeing it? Do I register the DNA kit under a false mane?
@GenealogyTV Жыл бұрын
Under tree settings set your tree to private. You can also make it unsearchable. If your DNA is attached to yourself in a private tree you may lose some of the features like ThruLines.
@chieflefthand780 Жыл бұрын
@@GenealogyTV can these settings be reversed if one wanted to? can they be changed at any time? I was thinking of taking two of the best-known DNA tests and one lesser-known one to get a better idea. Thank you much.

Yes. I’d start with AncestryDNA. It’s is the largest.

How do I look at labor contracts if possible? I am trying to find enslaved ancestors.
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brenda. There is a section on this video "Freedmen Bureau - African American & Poor Whites - Post Civil War" at 24:40 that specifically talks about the labor contract records. Toward the end of the video, starting at about 46:55, talks about where to find the records for enslaved ancestors. Here is the link to that video kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXK3n5aJatuBgrs. You might want to watch the entire video. Also another informative video is "Civil War Records - Southern Claims Commission" kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5jCeoWDfL6lo9U. I hope that helps.

Is there any way to sync it with Family Tree Maker 2019? I found something on Genealogy and what to add it to FTM
@GenealogyTV2 жыл бұрын
Yes... you can sync Ancestry with FTM. I do it all the time. It works quite well. I don't recommend syncing with FamilySearch, however.

Unfortunately, this works only if you’re put in to a region. Whereas on other DNA websites you can see the history of when various areas became part of your ancestry.

Connie, I have a question. I watched one of your video's that said to put people that have nicknames not in the Primary name. To go to the pull down name column and add it there. I now have to go to Quick edit to change their regular name and when I put their nickname in the added name column, I cannot see anything. Does this mean I just went through my tree and lost all my people nicknames: I'm a little frustrated about this
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
You should be putting nicknames in a second name fact. So you would add another name fact and use it as a secondary name keeping their proper name as their primary name. Therefore they would have two facts for names. One might say Connie Knox has the nickname and the other would say Constance Knox as the primary name. I hope that makes sense.

Silly question, I’m sure... but I’m a newbie... how do you get all the little profile emoticons and photos to use to denote certain things?
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
Emojipedia.com has most of the ones I use.

This is a great video, thank you. I have a famous ancestor that I am tired of getting hints for. Is there any way to stop hints for an ancestor?

Not that I know of.

Can I use these tips if I have a tree in Ancestry and I am a guest member? I have previously shared my tree as a guest member
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. I think you can search some of them. If you have a guest account, give it a try, you have nothing to lose. Let's us know how it goes. The DNA one at the end would work because you paid for a DNA test, and so that would come with the DNA price.

The other tools on ancestry are always disappointing because I type in the specific info such as I want to search the 1810"s, then it gives me 1860-1880's! It happens with every search. It doesnt listen to what you want
@GenealogyTV4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what record sets are available for the area. The records might span more than the decade you requested.

I always think it’s a little bit weird when ancestry gives me my own photos in the search results. These are definitely photos that I have uploaded myself that I know no one else has. Is there a way to eliminate those in the search result? Do we know why those are brought up in the search results?
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
No unfortunately. They likely were imported into someone else’s tree and so you’re getting hints from them.
@Vee925212 жыл бұрын
I have never got my own photos as hints. Hope this helps
