In the US, historically a person like the police man who had 18% black ancestry would have been considered black because of the "one drop" rule, and subjected to the discrimination, victimization and segregation that black Americans were subjected to, even if he looked more caucasian. That is why when people who have always thought they were caucasian find out they have black ancestry they take it very seriously as part of their identity and may trigger them to want to identify with and learn more about this heritage, and are often accepted as black or at least its respected that they are claiming their black roots. It means something in the context of our cultural history as a nation. This man didnt invent the one drop rule; he would have been considered black. It's sort of the opposite with American Indian ancestry. Historically because native tribes still had some sovereignty and land under treaties, the government would "whiten" anyone of American Indian ancestry who was part caucasian. The fewer people that counted as native, the less people they had to give the sovereignty and land/resource rights to. That is why even many Americans who are legitimately half native cannot legally claim identity unless there is enough ancestry all from the same tribe and family documented on tribal rolls. It was 2 different ways of disenfranchising 2 different groups of people, and now results in very different responses when an ostensibly "white" person discovers a significant % of ancestry in one of these groups. There is a political and historical context that influences the claim to these identities in the US.

On the accuracy of most of these tests: there was a study (you can look this up) where identical twins were tested for their ancestry and there was a nearly 20% discrepancy between the results!
@maxxmabemwe4859
@maxxmabemwe4859 3 жыл бұрын
That is not so surprising, DNA is not always passed through identically even in identical twins. I know a family where there are identical twin boys, one is gay and the other one is straight. There is a family that has identical twin girls, one is dark with nappy hair, and the other one is fair with straight European hair, however, their facial and other physical features are the same.

I saw a geneticist on local news more than a year ago. DNA testing is great for identifying criminal suspects. It's also almost full-proof in identifying John and Jane Does, as well as identifying relatives. It is not good at determining ethnic heritage. My father-in-law took a test, and it said he was about 90% British (English, Scottish, and/or Welsh). There is a slight problem. His father was born in a small town in the Netherlands and immigrated to the U.S. around age 6. There is nothing in the family history to suggest that people from Britain ever moved to Netherlands. So, not that accurate.
@hellcat1988

The first and only time I had my dna tested, I found out that I have a genetic heart condition that has a 50% chance to pass on to any offspring (75% if the egg donor has it) that WILL kill if not treated. I'm not exactly thrilled with the idea of find out anything else.
@hellcat1988
@hellcat1988 5 жыл бұрын
@Liza Tanzawa I knew I had the condition, I just didn't know that I had the genetic markers that COULD cause it (there are other things that could cause it outside genetics) or that it was pretty likely to be passed on. I wasn't going to have kids anyway, but knowing is kind of a bummer.

I was given the Ancestry test as a birthday gift and was genuinely interested to find out more about my heritage. It basically said "Your ancestors are from Europe", which I could have told you with reasonable accuracy just based on the fact that I'm white. It also failed to match me to one of my cousins (despite them being listed on my family tree) while managing to match me to her twin sister (both had also done the test, though I'm not sure why since being a twin is basically a two-for-one offer on your results). Was not impressed at all - proper genetic testing could give me a good idea of which County in the UK my ancestors were from and about 70% of my DNA hadn't been narrowed down further than "two thirds of a continent" and with the amount they charge they could certainly have done better than that.

A friend of mine who's done extensive research about his ancestry and knows he's a decendant of russian nobility who fled Russia during the revolution (his great grandparents, so not that long ago and he even has the official paperwork), had according to such tests no russian ancestry what so ever. So I'd take those tests with a pinch of salt.
@aecides3203
@aecides3203 5 жыл бұрын
@@lavrentivs9891 I mean it's basically right, in the sense that by narrowing it down to "Europe" it's more or less guaranteed to be. My niece did one and actually got connected to her biological father after having believed another man was her dead beat dad. My sister was surprised the father was a fling behind her then-boyfriend's back, so he became an ex-boyfriend who got blamed for over 2 decades. Now my niece's biological father, who had also done a dna test which allowed the link i supposed(?), has been getting to know her and will be giving her away at her wedding. Crazy story but real, so there must be some degree of accuracy. Also they weren't actually living very far apart, her in east Texas and him in west Louisiana, but i don't remember what service she used or if regions should matter unless both tests happened to go through the same lab. The real takeaway though is that cheating hurts innocent people.

Anyway, you have made it clear enough on past videos how much you hate Jim, so why are you still watching his videos? Yeah everybody sells data who can, but honestly I think these test are more accurate than you make out. The larger the pool of submissions the more accurate it becomes.

My mom gave them some, and Ancestry completely flubbed hers. They told her she was largely native American, Moor, and (wait for it) Slavic. She's Hawaiian pacific islander. As in Bayonet Constitution/Kingdom of Hawaii native, reaching back to Tahiti. That's one hell of a tough explain.

I really loved Jim Jefferies, He's a briliant commedian. Too bad he fell into the politicial and social justice warrior trap. Carerr suscide. Alienate so many people. I say, run for office or avoid politics if you want a large fan base. I'm out.

@@robertowd5635 Could you please provide the full quote? Furthermore, how is said alleged quote related to avi stating nothing "african tribal" except white s african should migrate? Or avi stating the way to find out if someone is violent is by asking if they are muslim?

@calibrazxr750 5 жыл бұрын
@@robertowd5635 yes I read it, but it wasn't addressed to me now was it. I have no problem with his anti Muslim rhetoric, because it was/is just comedy. He has made jokes about people from other religions in the past, as well as jokes about feminists, pro gun people, other nationalities ect, but you chose to focus purely on his jokes relating to Muslims. Why? Because you, just like everyone else like you, feel that it gives the best justification for your perceived outrage. By the way, last time I checked, anti Muslim rhetoric was not illegal.

im a genealogist, and these DNA-tests really kind of annoy me. a lot of it is just bullshit. or well, at least doesnt actuallly say much. for instance, i saw a video where they surprised british people with the results and told them they have german roots. and they were like "oh my god i thought im only british" uh... almost all of the british genepool stems from germany, because of various invasions and migrations
