After spending two nights anchored at Bannerman's Castle, we pull up our anchor and head north to Poughkeepsie for the afternoon to explore and wait for the tide to change. The anchorage is deep and is a new experience for us. As we bring up our anchor, we also brought up a huge log with a metal piece sticking out of it. Today was all about testing our anchoring abilities and patience.
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

That second Bridge was an old railroad trestle. It was decommissioned several years ago. The locals worked an agreement out and reworked it. It is now a State Park. It's called the Walkway Over the Hudson. We've walked it several times. They have installed an elevator I believe that will take you from the riverside to the Walkway.

Nice... we wanted to walk it but being anchored how we were and the 15min dock we just didn't have time :( Next time!

It caught fire in 1974, and hadn't been used since. It opened as the Walkway in 2009.

If you use the Anchor App it has a remote alert function. You leave your iPad in the boat with the app loaded and it will notify your phone if you drag.

So glad you both were feeling more confident. After traveling through the Great Lakes I'm sure boat life has been a little less stressful due to more experience. Also, no tide. 😀

GEE! You"d think it might be a little warmer on the lower helm?
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
True, however we mostly choose the upper helm because the visibility up there is so much better. Who knows if or when we will cruise these waters again so we really try to make the most of it and appreciate the area! We can be warm with layers

Just the start of river life. Soon you should be away from a tide and then just worry about the low water in the rivers. Enjoy

Wow that is deep water! I think the deepest we've ever had to anchor is around 25 feet, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I didn't realize that the Hudson is so deep there but it makes total sense when you explained why. Thanks for your insights. Did you ever get West Point pics or did I just miss it somehow? Stay safe.
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, our West Point footage didn't pan out 😭 What we think happened is right after leaving Bear Mountain, our memory cards were full and then none of our West Point shots saved. Not happy about it but it is what it is!!

We've found that 150ft of chain is a pretty normal amount, especially for the loop... More is typically better but this is probably the only circumstance that we've ever wanted more. We do have some extra line on board in case we needed it, but it isn't hooked up!

Okay, tell me what that hand signal means after the thumbs up when you turn your engine on and off. I've been wondering during every video. LOL I think the fear on someone stealing my dinghy when I docked somewhere would be a big thing I would have to overcome. So glad nothing like that has happened to you guys!
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
hehe it means, "Sweet, our engine started well" 'thats it, nothing special lol Some people lock up their dinghy, and sometimes we do that too, but it's like anything in life- every situation is different 😁

@@SchoandJo Ahhh, okay, cool. We can relate. We always hold our breath when we're somewhere remote and we try to start up our SUV so we could use that same hand signal when the engine turns over😁!

Yeah it's amazing how deep some rivers can get in spots... My advice is not to anchor in those deep areas.... Which tend to get a lot of the debris at the bottom and may end up losing your anchor....
